Root Doing ok, but what next?

I rooted my phone yesterday. Just successfully installed CWR. Got that up with the unpaid version of Rom Manager. I just created a backup using Rom Manager, then successfully restored from my backup. My questions now are...

-I saw Nitsuj respond in another thread that during the process you should flash cwr twice. I only did this once before I created my backup through Rom Manager. Is this bad?

-What is a Nandroid backup?

-What is ADW? So far through the entire process, I don't believe I've had to use this for anything I've done.

-I don't even know where to begin with other ROMS, though I saw on XDA a poll that most people were using Super Clean. What makes one better than another. Basically, the next thing I want to do is get my phone faster... what should I do next?

3. ADW is an alternative launcher to TouchWiz, you can get from the market. LauncherPro is the other popular one.

4. SuperClean is good, jt is pretty much God for the fascinate. It includes ADW and gets rid of the Verizon bloat. Blackhole is another popular one, even more spartan, just the basics to make the phone run then you add back the apps you like.

I would install a ROM to make it a little snappier. Then maybe a stupidfast kernel. And run Autokiller - try different presets like strict or aggressive. Pay attention here: you need ROMs and kernels for DI01, everything since the middle of last month has been for DJ05 (leaked verizon update). Make sure to double check before flashing.

I'd stop there for now and see if you're happy. Don't mess with Voodoo lagfix or any lagfix yet. All the new DJ05 stuff isn't any faster, it just fixes the gps for those who need it.

PS Titanium backup your apps before flashing a ROM

yeah flashing cwr twice isnt always neccessary, just it doesnt always take on the first try for many thats why its part of the instructions

i would say that autokiller id start with the smallest setting and work your way up...i find that aggressive/extreme/strick kills battery bigtime....i only use moderate

and yeah definetly read up on voodoo and the like before considering it

I don't find moderate worthwhile. If you click "system default" I bet your current kernel's default values are more aggressive than moderate. Though to be fair I don't pay attention to the battery

i did test out the different settings when i first got the phone....ultimate or aggressive....murdered my battery....like to the tune of anywhere from 10-20% more usage per day depending on how many apps i was using

1. if it can backup then its working fine....you may want to actually boot into cwr to check it out though...you can use "boot into recovery" in rom manager
2. currently..none...just showing support to koush who is one of the giants in the android world....some phones have "premium only" downloads like cynagen mod nightlies
3. cwr backups you your system like a snapshot of what you had at that moment...when flashing new roms (not entirely neccessary yet, but it will be with aosp and more advanced roms later) many require you to wipe data...titanium saves you the headache of redownloading all your apps, and enables you to keep your app/game data (ie angry birds scores)
4. autokiller enhances androids internal task management when used correctly
5. think of kernels as the brain of the os or the engine...whereas roms are the body
6. nope, unless the rom specifically remove touchwiz you can have it

Autokiller is probably unnecessary, especially when you're running a light ROM and UV.

Kernel options are:
1: DI01 (official release) vs DJ05 (leaked unofficial)
DJ05 has some great fixes (GPS, handset mic with headphones), along with a longer button-backlight that a lot of folks besides me like. DI01 basically only has the advantage of being official -- all the newer development is on DJ05.
2: Undervolt vs regular voltage
I think every single current DJ05 kernel is UV. Saves battery, and though it risks stability in theory, there's no problem unless you also overclock.
3: Overclock vs stock speed
There are a few overclock kernels, but they're experimental (no jt kernel does OC). IMO OC doesn't make the phone feel any faster, and risks stability. I'd rather have stock with UV...
4: Voodoo vs non-Voodoo
This is the big one... Voodoo fixes the stock filesystem that's very slow in doing writes. It used to be extremely tricky to uninstall and impossible to do nandroid backups with Voodoo active, but this is no longer the case with Voodoo5. However, some people still don't like it. I notice a difference in homescreen loading at boot and during multitasking, so I'm for.

On ROM Manager:
all jt's non-Voodoo are DI01, non-OC, and non-Voodoo (UV/non-UV is indicated)
jt's 12/03 Voodoo5 stable is DJ05, UV, non-OC, and Voodoo
geeknik's 1.23 I'm not sure about except it's DI01
geeknik's 1.54 and 1.70 are DJ05, UV, non-OC, and non-Voodoo

most of the dio1 kernels are in rom manager now, geeknik still has one or two i think (and he notes which ones) and jts nonvoodoo in rom manager are good...11/15 and 11/16 uv were good for me back in di01 days

uv mean undervolt which theoretically uses less battery life without sacrificing speed, but not everyones phone can run them

jts super clean 0.4 was a good option for di01 as well

-What is AOSP?
-DJ05 stuff is only for people who have applied the Froyo leak, correct? And you can only obtain the leak on IRC? At this point, should I concern myself at all with this, or just play around on DI01?
-What is a deodexed system? Is mine?
-Why is it called a "nandroid" backup, as opposed to just a backup?
-I don't know much about filesystems, so in practical use, Voodoo just makes the phone more efficient and faster? Why do some people not like it? It seems like a big deal, as I see the word "Voodoo" everywhere on here. For a noob like myself, is it worth the trouble?

And lastly, the REAL question is... how did y'all get so GOOD at this stuff? Do you helpful, helpful people have degrees in computer science or what? I mean, I'm learning a lot, but it will be a LONGGGGGG time before I can even begin to offer advice to anyone. You guys know your help and time is beyond appreciated, so once again, thank you!

Reading about the Roms... how do you wipe data before applying one?
If I install Super Clean, should I get a kernel after that? Suggestions?

You will l have the the option to wipe data in rom manager as you install. Get one of the kernels nitsu suggested above

Realistically, once I install Super Clean and a Geeknik kernel, as far as speed, what should I actually notice? Faster switching between home screens? Faster webpage loading? What should I be on the lookout for as far as a difference?

Premium is mostly a donate version to support koush one of the heavyweights in the android world....as of now there is no premium only content for. Us

There was no froyo leak it was a 2.1 update leak and the Rome and radio files are restricted to irc to help protect the source at the insistence of the devs

Aosp - android open source project....basically a Tom built not off of touchwiz or oem skins but straight from Google.

Voodoo is much safer than previous versions but there is still a learning curve .....read as much as you can and understand it before jumping in

We learn all this stuff through experimentation .....discussion and soaking up info basically...there's no replacing ones own experience. just takes some. Time

Deodexing enables you to run themes....you can manually do it but its not simple. Easiest way is. To flash one of jts rom's....always make sure to use files meant for. Ur os version

I just installed the Super Clean ROM, but after looking around for a few minutes, am now loading yesterday's backup. Thinking I should do as suggested and buy Titanium Backup before jumping into the Roms again.

When I looked around, I noticed I had none of my apps, not even Rom Manager. How do I go about flashing a Rom, but when it's done, having all my apps/texts/etc there? I'm assuming it has to do with Titanium but can you walk me through it please?

Also, on one of the homepages to the left, (I opted to use Touchwiz, I think it was the homepage 2 to the left of center), it said something about something on the screen about not being able to load a widget I think, I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly what it said. I got the impression it was the Samsung news/finance/weather widget? Do Samsung widgets not work with Super Clean?

You have to download the free version, it is the actual program. Then you may download and pay for the upgrade version, it is simple the software key that unlocks the free version into the full version.

To be clear... you must have the free version no matter what.
You can not use just the paid version, it is an add on to the free app.

Ok, I downloaded the free Titanium, then paid for the key for Pro. I backed up my paid apps, plus two files that I read somewhere contain text and voicemail data. Can someone please tell me exactly how to back that data up just to be sure?

I thought maybe I could go back to Super Clean without having to do the entire 150 MB or whatever download again. In Rom Manager, I restored from sd card, but I restored from update.zip thinking that was Super Clean as the file name looked familiar. That brought me to basically I think a stock Rom. I know I did something stupid, but not sure exactly what. What is update.zip again? When you are in recovery mode (is that what you call holding volume +/- and power?), you use update.zip to enter cwr right?

So right now, I'm again loading yesterday's backup from clockwork. Can someone tell me:
-Is the only way to use a downloaded Rom to back it up after you've applied it? If you go back to a previous backup, do you have to download the entire large file again if you choose to use that Rom, or is it saved to SD? If it IS saved to SD can someone tell me where I can find Super Clean?
-Once you have a new Rom flashed, how do you go about using Titanium Backup to restore your settings? Also curious about wallpaper, texts, call log

You shouldn't lose your apps when flashing a ROM unless you chose to wipe data. I just rooted, then installed the DJ05 update/ROM and maintained all of my apps and data. I did not download Titanium Backup at all.

anything downloaded in rom manager is saved to clockworkmod--download--whatever folder the dev named in the manifest...on your sdcard...it wont redownload the same file, it will just immediately ask you to boot into recovery to apply...you can flash it directly in clockwork by navigating to it on the sdcard as well.

titanium backup (if you select batch backup) will save your apps and data at the moment of backup...then after you wipe data...open titanium backup and select batch restore apps with app data....dont restore system data as it can cause issues.

you will have to restore your wallpapers, themes etc afterwards after you wipe data

personally i always wipe between roms and wipe cache between kernels...but it isnt entirely neccessary with the roms we are currently using as they are all touchwiz based and similar at the core. when we eventually get aosp roms, or vanilla touchwiz roms (roms built from the ground up with only bits of touchwiz in to maintain some samsung apps) then wiping data will be essential.

still some people occiasonally get force close hell, and the only times i ever got that on this phone where when i forgot to wipe cache on the old voodoo kernels when flashing.

update.zip just stays on the root of your sdcard, dont touch it or rename it...it will automatically flash you through stock recovery into clockwork if you boot in through rom manager....if you boot into stock recovery, then navigate down one and select "apply update.zip" to get into cwr...but dont ever manually do anything with the file
