That is a guestimate, for an official release. But you never know.
If I remember rightly, 2.2 came in early August to the HTC. The SDK was released 20th of May (from Wikipedia). So it was about 5-6 weeks till HTC officially released it.
Based on a similar timescale, you are looking at early late January/early February. Then of course if/when carriers will include it in their updates, you are looking at atleast another month (if not more).

Possibly even later. Last year with 2.2 the Desire was the latest htc handset and very close to the N1 that Froyo was already on.
Now htc have a few newer handsets and the Nexus S is a different phone again.
I reckon it will take longer this time. That said apparently the rom has already been ported onto the Desire on XDA I think although not quite fully functional.

I'm tempted to try a basic vanilla Gingerbread ROM without any extra apps included (except A2SD+). I can live without getting the market updates for apps included in LeeDroid at the moment, but I think it may bother me after a while.

Google rolled out 2.2 for the Nexus One 3rd week of June. I didn't get my OTA until 1st week of July and I remember the (unlock) Desire go the OTA from HTC a couple of weeks after. I think this was the first time that HTC showed everyone that really, it can put out updates in a timely manner.

It's only taking forever for the US to get the official 2.2 update.. I just think they should skip that and go straight to Gingerbread, in like 2015 at this rate.
this is a good question no ones addressed yet...as alot of us are facing lower amounts of space.....this is a critical question for us non rooted lot..
also do you suppose that HTC may actually hold off a lil with the 2.3 rollout for us Desire lot (if we get it) to add the Sense 2.0 update alongside it?
well...they will obviously have to play with 2.3 a lil to make it work with sense as they have done in the past...so it seems logical that they may do *BOTH* at the same time...
The Android ROM is stored on a dedicated partition on the phone, and there's plenty of space. The 'lower amounts of space' that most users have problems with is for apps, and it's different from the ROM partition.

I agree, I'm considering a change when the stable 2.3 ROMS start to appear. LeeDroid has been great so far - it works well with my existing radio, has A2SD+ and loads of built in apps. But that also presents a problem in that with A2SD+ I don't need apps included in the ROM, and having them in the ROM partition makes it very hard to update directly from the Market.
So the way forward for me is stable 2.3 ROM with A2SD+ and no apps included.
