Root Rooted, Running Fission 2.1 Final and Ready for More!

First of all, thanks to all who helped paved the way for making my DX experience great thus far! Upon receiving it in the mail a few weeks ago, I did research and ultimately decided to root and install the Fission 2.1 Final Rom (really wanted the vanilla android experience - with no blur elements). This is mainly because I want my DX to be fast and relatively easy to use on the fly. The only things I added back were the stock camera and video camera. I used to spend a lot of time tweaking my computers and devices back in the day, so I'm pretty comfortable with geeking around, but now that I'm a dad and busy as hell, I'm looking to make further adjustments, but hopefully with the help of you guys it can be quick and painless.

That being said, I have a few questions:

Now that I'm running smoothly, my first question is about battery life. I'm getting approx. 24 hours with my charge. I'm running Advanced Task Killer and Battery Booster. Is this battery life fairly consistent with what you're getting? I'd say I'm an average user: Internet randomly throughout the day, email (via Gmail App), few phone calls, Texting all day long.


If I decide to overclock, should I make the change via the options in my Fission folder or is there an APP that makes this easier? With any changes to the system, do I have to backup every time?

Changing themes - Is a backup necessary, or is a change like this relatively safe?

IF I decide to upgrade to a newer version of Fission, what are the best steps to do so in order to maintain the general working order of my cell?


I know the answers of these questions are out there on the forums, but being a father of a 15-month-old daughter is making time a commodity for me. Thanks for any feedback and/or suggestions! Speaking of which, I'm open to suggestions regarding APPs and anything else you guys have been using that will make my experienc even better.

I would start by removing Advanced task killer. It does not good for your phone after the froyo upgrade. You will probably see an increase in battery life after that. If you need something like that try autokiller it requires root and enhances the OS's way of closing stuff down. It works with it, not against it.

with Fission 2.1 I would just use the oc mods in the fission folder. You will just need to mount /system in clockwork recovery when you flash them. Start small and figure out what works. Mine only oc's to 1.15 ghz.

A backup is definitely necessary. what if you don't like the theme or even worse it bogs down your phone and causes FC's. Only use themes approved for your version of Fission though. fission is picky.

I would back up all your data with google and titanium backup so that you can easily get it all back. Right now the new stuff is Fission 2.3. I'm not sure if this will go over the new OTA (.340) but it was definitely built for the leak (.320) they are both similar so it would probably work. If you didn't want the upgraded Bootloader you could opt for the slightly outdated 2.2.2 which works on your kernal. I would only do 2.2.2 if you don't upgrade to the leak/OTA but if you do upgrade only apply 2.3 (available through a donation to teamdefuse) People have applied 2.3 to the OTA successfully over at XDA. So if you want 2.3 I would get the Fission Rom Manager from the link that you get when you donate. download 2.3. upgrade to the OTA (requiring an SBF) or get the .340 update.zip from the TBH app (no sbf required ). then apply 2.3 and restore your apps with Titanium and you should be good.

To follow up on your last section about Fission 2.3, I've got a few more questions.


- When you mention OTA, you're referring to the Over-the-Air update from Verizon, correct? Speaking of which, will that screw up my phone and wipe out my root access if I went the OTA route?

yes, byt OTA its the over-the-air update to bring your system to 2.3.340. By taking the OTA update you will lose root. z4root is the easiest method to get root back and it's confirmed to work with 2.3.320.

So there are two options: OTA or Update.zip from TBH.
If you want to be a good verizon customer and get the OTA you will need to SBF back to stock. OR restore a nandroid backup of stock 2.2. You can still be rooted and get the OTA (lose it though) you just also have to have all the bloat apps and other stock stuff. If you don't have a nandroid of 2.2 you will need to do a factory reset in the privacy tab in settings then SBF back using the 2.2 SBF file. this will take you factory fresh. You can then accept the OTA.
If you don't want to SBF you can get the .340 update zip. Someone posted a link on the root forum with a link but it will probably be dead in a few hours so grab it fast. If you can't find it on the internet it is in the TBH app along with the right SBF file for it. This is the easier root since you don't have to SBF. Just apply the update.zip and this will upgrade your bootloader.
At this point you should be on 2.3.320 and can get ready for fission 2.3. Currently, the only way to get 2.3 is by donation. Once donated they will send you a link that has the fission rom manager V1.2. This is someone equivalent to ROM manager in that you download cool stuff lol. You then download 2.3 and then click install.
