Htc desire black (new one) on orange need unlocking anyone managed to get this unlocked??

Any Desire manufactured after May 2010 can be unlocked, but websites will give you the "Its available on our new database but you have to pay more" excuse. However, if you have had the phone for 3 months most mobile operators will provide you with an unlock code for around the 15 - 25 pound mark.

i assume this is for debranding.. and if i have assumed correctly, just remove the sim when debranding + downloading future updates

I debranded mine (I'm on Orange) to go to Froyo early and removed my sim card before I started, but left it in during the recent update and it was fine - no sim lock, no problems. For info I haven't unlocked my phone or rooted it, but I did turn my memory card into a goldcard and it has been left in the phone.

If he doesn't have it in his database, he doesn't have it in his database. They buy them from the networks if I recall, so you either find a seller with a very up-to-date database, wait a while, or get it direct from Orange.

Your service provider won't unlock a phone untill its at least 8 months old. I went here for mine I paid by credit card. For their own reasons they'll try and force you to use Paypal but I'm not that stupid!

Oh, and I suppose I aught to tell you that while the code was accepted by the phone, non Orange cards will still not work! I think its something to do my Cyanogenmod.

Beware!

3 is not a GSM network. All the 3 phones I've seen have their SIM cards Glued in!

thats the actualy '3' branded phones...mostly the cheaper market ones such as the older LG and ZTE phones...and a number of them can be unlocked too...as did get an old ZTE unlocked once..

My gf's wildfire is from 3 and is covered in 3 stuff....sim toolkit and app as well as the highly brain meltingly stupid 2 minute long boot up thanks to the 3 splash screen....her sim isnt glued in though...and will be unlocked next time I go see her, getting it unlocked by 3 and then im gonna root it to remove the 3 crap..
