Help Where is my memory going?!

I have just over 7 MB of internal memory in my phone right now. I'm running stock 2.1 on my HTC Hero and for some reason my memory keeps disappearing. I've turned off active sync, so I'm not recieving voicemails or emails, and even after deleting a bunch of apps to get the "low storage" notification to go away my memory continued to drain. what could be causing this? I haven't installed any new apps, active sync is turned off, but in the last hour my memory has gone from 7.76 MB to 7.04 MB. I've restarted my phone several times to no avail. PLEASE HELP!

Try deleting the cache for the largest apps. Go into Settings, then Applications, then Manage Applications.

You can then sort the apps by size if you hit the Menu button. Tap the largest apps and press the button to delete the cache. Do not delete the data of the apps. Unless, of course, you want to redo your app settings.

I'm a little weary to try doing it this way because the apps with the most memory cached are systems applications like com.htc.socialnetwork.prov...(the rest is cut off) which is taking up 18.71 MB. then my contacts storage is in second place with 14.73 MB. the rest either have no cache to delete or they are insignificant in size.

That first one is Facebook contact cache. You can delete app caches without causing any trouble.

It looks like you could free up nearly 35 MB of internal storage if you deleted those two caches. Other apps that usually use up a lot of internal storage with cache are the Internet browser, Google Maps, and the YouTube app.
