Root What is the PROPER way of updating on rooted Incredible?

I'm a bit new to rooting. I rooted my phone about two weeks prior to the OTA update from Verizon (the most recent one). As you probably know, or at least from my experience, if you choose to "Install Now", the phone will count down from 10 and reboot. Unfortunately, it counts down to 10, the window closes, and nothing else. I know this is happened because my phone is rooted, and I've looked all over online and found out I'm obviously not alone. The only problem is, aside from everyone reporting that their phone won't restart, no one has provided a real concise and definitive way of getting this update. A lot people talk about this ROM, that ROM, S-on/off, ect. but I haven't found a clear step-by-step way of unrooting the phone and/or getting this update manually.

My main question is how do I properly install this update on my phone? If it means I have to unroot, how do I do that exactly? If it helps, I rooted my phone with Unrevoked.

I heard that this OTA update isn't very worthwhile, but I do want to know what I should do when Gingerbread 2.3 comes out, because I will likely be stuck in the same situation.

all you have to do is flash this file here through recovery and you are done, it is 100% stock but you will retain root and not have to deal with an BS of unrooting and rooting again:

I'm not sure if this is the same question or not. But I rooted with unrevoked 2.1 and wanted to do the 2.2 version posted (to get the update). I just ran it over my current root of 2.1. But it looks the same, nothing got wiped. Is this right? Did it do nothing?
The question I guess would be can you run the latest unrevoked on the top of the last one?

Yeah, the posted Rom is a great choice to get a "stock" Rom while staying rooted the whole time. Smart way to go for those not really wanting a custom Rom.

On a side note, last week I updated the [How To] Downgrade To 2.2 thread so that it's the latest update (includes OTA contents). Also known as Software 3.26.605.1.

So if you ever use it, you will be getting the current stock setup. I will continue to update that thread each time we get an update (or shortly thereafter) so it can always be a tool to find your way back to the stock setup of the moment. You do not need to run the RUU after loading cuz you're fully up to snuff at that point. Just mentioning that to let everyone know...in this case sdrawkcab has provided the easiest way to get the same thing and not lose root.

Now that I did this, how do I confirm it updated?
Also, If i want to get this back to factory (remove everything) what is the best way to go about that now? I assume it's still rooted. I have too much crap on this and the battery does not last half a day (tried all the suggestions on the forum too).
Maybe a fresh start will allow me to start over.

Check your software version: menu> settings> about phone> software. Should be 3.26.605.1. To go back to 100% factory without root:

There are a bunch of lines in the software page. I did not see one that said 3.26.605.1 though. Which one exactly is that?

My Software number says 20101014

As for the OTA update I actually have enjoyed the MUCH faster battery charging. The battery life is no better, but the charging is probably 3-4 times faster. I got rid of the bloatware using Root explorer, so the rest doesn't matter to me.

I just did this and renamed the second download Update.zip and this worked for me....the entire process went like this...

1. Unroot by flashing stock 2.2 via Hboot
2. renamed the updated RUU update.zip
3 flashed the update via Hboot

everything came out perfect and I still have S-off I will reroot tomorrow.

the only reason I did this was I wanted to see if it would work and it did hope this will help others

You can stop after #1. That's the same thing as the RUU so no need to do it twice.
