Root CELBFroyo Fans - fave version from 3.2 - 3.8?

Believe it or not, I am still on CELBFroyo 3.2 - been using it for a little less than two months now without straying for another.

For those of you that are CELB Froyo fans, have you noticed any compelling reasons related to either stability or performance to trade up?

Not really. For me, WiFi has been a bit weird since CFS v6 came out, and I believe that V3.2 was the last with CFS V5.

The differences that I have noticed:

- there is a new power control widget that is added to the top of the notification bar. It is configurable; you can change the icons (up to 6) and the color of the highlight (default I believe is blue) and you can turn it off, but turning off does not seem to survive a restart. This is a Cyanogen feature and it bugs me, to be honest - I don't need more stuff on my notification bar.

- there is a new Cyanogen feature that allows you to define specific gestures that you can draw on the lockscreen to go to specific apps or shortcuts. Again, I understand why people like this, but it really does't do anything for me.

- the CFS v8 kernel adds a new default CPU governor called smartass which is (I think) supposed to give better performance at the same battery levels as ondemand, or perhaps it is the same performance as ondemand (or is it interactive?) with better battery savings (I think it's the latter.) I don't notice that much of a difference. Some people report issues with Pandora that they say are solved by switching to the ondemand (or performance) governor.

- 3.8 added a settings option to change the CPU minimum and maximum speed, and the governor. It sure is useful, if you want to switch things around.

Stability? I have always thought of CELB as very stable, all through. I think I started with 2.3.

I think the smartass setting is supposed to be similar to the collin_ph battery tweak. Some people seem to get it working well, others it freezes, lags, and whatnot.

Just another one of those things that differ drastically between one eris and another.

Aside from a few issues with the mms app and having to flash an older version and a hiccup with titanium backup, I haven't had any issues with 3.8. Wifi works and connects within a minute, everything is running smooth and snappy (even on smartass).

I don't think I could go back to 3.2 and lose all the CM sourced extras.

Again, with V3.8, you don't need the mini-bloat of SetCPU for this anymore. Settings->CPU Settings, you can set the governor from there.

It doesn't stick through reboots though or provide profile settings as of yet. I think that's why some people, myself included, are keeping Set CPU for now.

You are absolutely right. I guess that I hadn't rebooted it yet. ;)

I've been running v3.7 because of the lockscreen gestures (I really like those a lot) but I'm probably going to nand back to the v3.6. I don't think my battery life is as good, and the Market lost all of my apps save for 2.

I've been having issue's with the market on a few ROMs. Same with my wife on her rooted Droid. App reloading after updating would miss about half of the apps, and many times when looking at the "downloaded apps" page, it would show about 10 of 40-50 apps.

I'd have to delete the market and market updater data and cache then sometimes reboot to see them again for a while.

If this is happening after restoring apps from Titanium Backup, it's a known issue that can be cleared up by installing any app - it doesn't need to be one of your old ones; anything will do - and the Downloads page should then show all of your installed apps (and uninstalled but previously purchased apps.)

Actually happened after a NAND restore, but your trick did the job anyway! Thanks.

just saw this thread guys...As far as cfsv6 having some issues i had been compiling with a alternate toolchain...i reverted to the regular toolchain for celbfroyo 3.8 so I am hoping that fixes the issues that some have had with the wifi. Also have updated the cpuboost app so that it does have a set on boot feature...i also added screen on/off profiles. You can get the updated app in the themes and apps section of xda for the eris.

the new cpuboost works great, but it seems to be having to ask for superuser even time I wake the phone up. seems to stutter for a couple seconds, the root message pops up, and then works normally.

Same result here; I'm giving 3.9 a spin.

Out of curiosity, is gapps-mdpi-20101008-signed.zip the googlshits that people are using now with current Froyo ROMs? (When I looked on Conap's Grdlock page, I only saw gapps-mdpi-20100926-signed.zip.) After my first boot, the Market wanted to update several of Google Apps (and also had forgotten all of my apps except two paid apps).

Couple other hiccups I'm looking in to, but I need to do a little more research before I say anything.

Its not popping up a request just showing a message that it grants it su permissions correct? I made it so that when it receives the screen on notification it starts the service to bump the cpu back up to the screen on settings. I was attempting to not have the app running constantly checking if screen was on or off cause i don't want to drain the battery with it. There is probably a more efficient way but I'm new to java so still working on it. Mine doesn't seem to shutter at all though. What governor are you using. I've found with the smartass governor since it's made to cap the speeds at 351 when screen is off and the kernel currently only has 245 and 480 speeds that if you have smartass governor set it's going to set it to 352 but will only actually go up to the 245 speed because there is no 352 speed in the kernel so it sticks at next lowest amount. This is why so many people are having trouble with streaming music with smartass governor. Of course that's a kernel problem that i need to address eventually. Thanks for the feedback.

There is a newer gapps...i'm personally still using the 9/26 gapps cause I just haven't gotten around to downloading the newer package. I've never had it forget my apps though unless switching from 2.1 to 2.2 or if you booted the rom before installing google apps.

Hi Conap,

First, thank you very much for everything you have done for the Eris community - ROMs, kernels, you name it. (I don't think it gets said enough, so here goes again: Thank you!)

I'm looking in to the behavior of the TED Mobile app, which is a streaming-only app. I can't get it to produce any video at all, and audio stutters horribly, even when I choose interactive or ondemand governors and set the CPU min to 480. First, I need to check to see if there has been a app version change - whatever I have installed on my CELBFroyo 3.2 ROM works fine there. I'll provide some more feedback after some more experiments (right now I've got to run out to do something for the evening), but if you think it could provide any insight, I can overflash a couple of different CFS kernels into the 3.9 ROM and see if the behavior disappears with a kernel rollback (but continuing to use the same ROM/framework/installed apps configuration).

right

even if the "screen on/off" setting is disabled? would enabling it and settings higher screen off clocks override this?

3.9, smartass. havent' tried 3.9 and cpuboost with ondemand yet. we'll see how pandora does with smartass since I'm about to head to the gym.
