Help Pulgged In = Turned On; Why?

I turn my Ally off for the night, plug it in to recharge & it turns it self back on. So, I turn it off again &, back on it comes! WTF?

I want the thing off so it does not make any alert-noises and bother those within earshot. I suppose I could put it on Silent, but, come-on! This should be an allowed thing to do to a phone.

Why in hell would it ever be set up to come back on when I deliberatly just turned it off!

Note; "Stay Awake" under "Development" is NOT checked.

Smartphones are designed to stay on. I remember my old palm centro was impossible to turn off without removing the battery.

The ally has the Power off option to conserve battery
When you have it plugged in its doing things.. So it turns on

Really???? Funny, I can power off my Moto Droid after I plug it in, and it stays off. I'm curious about this myself. I plug in my son's Allys in my bedroom when they go to bed (so they aren't texting all night) and I really don't like hearing them going off all night from their friends text messages.

My Droid Incredible stays off while charging. so not all smartphones do that

Yeah...I guess that's just how the Ally is designed. I think my mom's HTC Eris does the same thing.

If you don't want to receive messages at night, I suggest throwing it into Airplane mode while it's on the charger and taking it off in the morning. When you take it off, the messages you may have received at night will come through.

Edit: I think the Ally has to be booted into android to charge. I think it has something to do with drivers to regulate charging. I remember when I had a Bricked ROM and the battery whent dead... And the phone wouldent turn on even when plugged in. Turns out removing the battery allows the phone to turn on when dead, after you boot into android you put the battery back in and it charges.

Remember when in the LG USB Update software it would always tell you to have a full battery before flashing, probably for this reason.

I remember the time my battery died while flashing and the phone wouldn't even turn on. I was so scared. In a panic I got on gtalk and Imed trident, he told me to take the battery out and boot into recovery. That worked lol.

Its weird, my old ENv would turn on yet some Evos and Droid stay on lol.

Maybe it's an LG thing? My EnV2 would kind of turn on. It would light up and say charging on the front screen and inside screen if you opened it. But once you pulled the charger out, it would boot.

Hmm, I keep mine in the LG dock beside my bed at night, and when I turn the screen off it stays off.

I have it defaulted to Lightning Bug so I can hear crickets for an hour or so, but even with that running I can keep the screen turned off. When LB shuts off with the sleep timer the screen stays dark. Maybe because I have auto-sync turned off? Or because Juice Defender keeps data turned off when I have the screen off?

Edit: I love the dock, btw. Best accessory by far that I've bought for a phone.

I just found a way to get screwed by this behavior.

You have a phone with a low battery. Plug it in to get charged (which forces the phone to turn on, like it or not). Now, something happens & the power source goes dead. The phone is now on & consuming what little battery charge it had & eventually goes dead.

This it not hypothetical; it happpened to me.

I plugged in a phone with about 30% battery into the USB port of a computer & went to bed. After a short time, the computer went to sleep & turned off the USB ports. With the phone on all night & draining its battery I awoke to a virtyally dead phone.

Your plain-old non-smart phone would never do anything so stupid! If the power failed, it just stopped charging, it didn't switch to draining the battery!

This is a horrible design chioce LG made!!

I don't really understand why people don't want the phone on when it's charging...

When I charge mine overnight, I put it into airplane mode and silent mode. That prevents anything from happening that might cause the phone to make a sound and bother anyone within earshot. Pretty simple thing to do.

The other similar annoyance is that closing the slide out keyboard turns the screen on. I am still learning not to bother turning the screen off and THEN close the keyboard, because I just have to turn it of again.

Sorry for the misunderstanding on my part. But I had never tried to charge the Ally with it powered down before. Mine does the same thing, even if I plug it in first and then power it down. It reboots. That sure does seem silly, especially in today's "go green" market mentality.

My Droid 1 would also power up when charging after being turned off. My Droid 2 can charge while it turned off and stays turned off.

I just ran across an app called Sweet Dreams that might be useful to those who do not want to have to deal with sounds, incoming calls, etc. at night while charging the phone and sleeping. I only read the description, but it sounds like you can set the app to do things like turn on/off your phone, wifi, Bluetooth, sounds, etc. automatically based upon clock settings, location, and movement of the phone . They even said the app can make the phone respond in some ways when IT hears a sound!

I found the app on the net, not on the market. But their website says it is available on the market.

Edit - Well, in fact it is on the Market, and it is totally free. Their website says they won something called the Android Developers Challenge with this app, I believe in 2009. It looks very nice, is loaded with all kinds of options you can set to happen or not happen during your chosen "sleep time interval" (such as sound, no sound, vibrate, higher or lower volume setting, as well as turning wifi, BT, and cell radio on or off) and it gets better. You can set the app so that these don't kick in if you are "not home" (not within a set distance of meters to a GPS point you define as home) when your set sleep time comes, or even if you are still using the phone (based upon motion sensors). It may solve the hassles some of you mentioned about not wanting to disturb others. All of this can be set to change automatically.

For a free app, this seems very impressive.

For those who are subscribed to a thread with email notification, if they have read all the posts, and then the last person to have posted edits their post as I just did above, does that trigger a notification email to all the subscribers again? Or will the notification only trigger when an actual additional post is made?
