Eris Owner thinking of going to Moto Droid

I am getting close to my 30 day mark with the Droid Eris. I pretty much chose this phone because of the form factor. I am coming from the Storm 1, which I was always updating the OS or installing a some hybrid. I want to stick with the Eris, but I am unsure that we will get an Android update on Jan. 22. I feel like I need a little more power and umph. I am thinking of trading my Eris in for the Droid.

Has anyone done that and what are your thoughts?

I think it's personal preference.

From what I've read and heard - 2.0 will be available soon.

I understand the Motorola is a little faster, brighter display, etc.

But - I think it's just too bulky. And, though the slide-out keyboard is a nice option - not sure if it's worth it.

For me, and this is where the personal preference part kicks in, I use it as a phone/work e-mail reader first - and don't do mass amounts of texting or browsing.

As far as the other differences between the two phones go (form factor, processor speed, screen size, etc), you'll have to decide for yourself which you prefer. Personally, I prefer the Eris; the Droid was just too much of a brick for me (among other issues).

But as far as getting 2.0 or 2.1 on the Eris, everything I'm reading (this, for example) suggests that the Eris definitely will be upgraded to 2.X in the first quarter of 2010... whether that's January 22, or sometime in February or March, nobody seems to know. But the Eris will be upgraded, once HTC figures out how to integrate Sense UI to the new version of Android.

Dont go to the Moto Droid. If you dont like the Eris just return it, pay the $35 fee, and wait a few months for the new phones to come out. It will be worth it.

i have a similar thread about this, been debating it in my head for awhile now and i think ive made up my mind... heres why:

i just spent about 2 hours at verizon messing with the moto droid (i currently have the eris) and i am not impressed

yes there's a lot of personal preference involved but, there's a lot other factors

they say the moto droid is so much faster, nah.. i didn't get that after using the eris for this long. as a matter of fact, the eris feels so much smoother (the SenseUI). i felt choppy on the home screen with the moto droid. that was my first revelation...

secondly, i held it, put it in my pocket, and it just didn't feel right, its a rectangular brick of a phone, ugly indeed.. the eris is sleek and sexy

thirdly, yeh the moto droid has a bigger SD card but do u need 16 gigs? your paying for it.

also, the web browser. the pinching of the htc is awesome, its more interactive and feels better than the simple zoom in and zoom out.

the slide out keyboard? some may like those, but me, no. i would preferably never use the keyboard because i hate sliders, they feel cheap and it's not my style (personal preference)

then i thought about the manufacturer, motorola... HTC is where its at, motorola is on a downslide while HTC is on the up.

now some may say "dont get either, just wait for another".. but the way phones are these days your gonna wait your entire lifetime to be happy. once u get a 'newer' one then another 'newer' one will come out and u'll be like damnit, why didn't i just wait.

in conclusion, HTC is going to fix these bugs that are littered around (and moto's got its own bugs to fix) and HTC is going to get a brand spankin new Android OS update which will be very interesting with the SenseUI. so if you want to spend the extra money on the brick phone, go ahead, but i really don't think you'll be satisfied if you think the htc eris is not your phone.

of course this is all my opinion, do what you will, but don't expect to be piss your pants happy when you get the moto droid, and when the eris update comes out u might be kickin yourself for not keeping it.

Funny, I am looking at going in the opposite direction. I am currently back to the Storm after trying the Droid for three weeks. It SUCKED (IMO). Besides the fact that the Bluetooth protocols need A LOT of work, the slider keyboard is horrid. Why did they skew everything to the left of center and expect one to find a comfortable typing position?

So don't use the slider, right? True. But why include one that isn't form-fitting?

Love the OS. Hate the phone. So I just ordered the Eris today. Yes, it is not 2.0 (yet) but IMO it is simply a better phone.

You'll be happy with it. The Eris is a great phone. I don't notice that it is only running 1.5/1.6. It should be upgraded eventually anyways. They just released it and know that people are signing two year contracts, so support should not dry up anytime soon. Unless you are going to use it as your primary computer, it has plenty of juice to check your e-mail, browse the web, and use Android apps when you are out and about.

The only issue I might foresee is the browser. How fast is it when compared to that of the Droid? The browser was the one shining point to the Droid, and something that I have missed since going back to my Storm. Thanks!

But I decided I can live with the lag and will keep the Eris as the laggier performance and smaller screen do not outweigh everything else I love about this phone.

Thank for the positive feedback. I am going to stick with my Eris. I have have a family plan with 2 line eligible for upgrade in January and in March. I am hoping that an Android update comes out for the Eris before then or if not maybe a new 2.1, 4" touchscreen phone with HTC Sense UI will be released.

BTW, I got my Eris on Black Friday from Bestbuy for $49, $52 with tax.

BTW I got my Eris free on Dell's website and hubby got Moto Droid for 119.99. With new Verizon contract. And we are both in love with our phones. I get to mess with both phones and of course my Eris is the best!!! And he thinks his is best...I just let him think that!! LOL!!
