Help Froyo 2.2 update fail (yellow exclamation point)

I downloaded the froyo OTA update and got the dreaded yellow "!" in the triangle. I tried booting into Recovery Mode.

When I try to choose "apply sd card :update.zip", I get:

E: failed to open /sdcard /update.zip (No such file or directory)
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted

Ideas?

Edit: I don't see it on the sd card (though it finished downloading and prompted me to install) and I can't get it to prompt me to download again.

Oh and if it matters, it was 49.5mb.

EDIT: The answers are all here now. Please read the entire thread before trying to alter your phone, just in case there's useful info you haven't seen yet. :)

Same happened to me....would love to be able to try again (it's acting like nothing ever happened, shows 2.1, and says that my phone is up to date when I try to go to the Update Firmware and Update Android. Anyone figured out how to make it prompt with the update again? I called Sprint and they don't know...say I should bring it to the store to do it manually (which means they have my phone for 2 hours and will be doing a factory reset I bet :( ). This update doesn't require a factory reset if it comes over the air, right?

I've got a rooted Intercept with a few of the stock apps removed (but backed up to my SD) ... it failed on a logo file of some sort (it was 4 am in the morning, I shouldn't be updating when I'm 1/2 asleep) and then rolled itself back to 2.1. If anyone figures out how to try again, I can perhaps get more detailed information. My update.zip file is now missing as well.

I had the exact same problem..Received message that said phone is ready for update. I pressed OK. It should a picture of a box unpackaging with the andriod character, then I got a screen that showed the droid character with a caution sign (white triangle with exclamation point). Now my phone when i reboot just sits at the Samsung screen and never goes past it. ... Called Sprint Tech Support and they have NO IDEA that the update for the Intercept is being pushed out!

This was exactly what I was afraid would happen when I removed all the crapware.

Did you try restarting in recovery mode? I mentioned how to do it above. That at least got my phone working again.

I have 2 of these intercepts at my house and after getting the first one bricked i just got a message for the 2nd phone to do the update. It said the updated file has been downloaded and verified 49.5 mb. How can i find the file on the phone to upload?

Go into your drawer/tray thingy and look for My Files. See if you see the update.zip. If you do, hook the phone up to your compooter and copy it over. ;)

Don't forget to properly mount and unmount (before unplugging) using the slide down menu-doojobby.

Edit: Could I ask folks to specify, when posting about this problem, to say whether they've rooted/temp rooted or not in the past? I'm still not sure if it's only happening to those of us who went on crapware patrol.

I just let mine sit at the yellow exclaimation mark, and eventually it rolled into an error message, and then let me choose to reboot and a few other options. Once rebooted, it was still at 2.1 and works fine. Sorry for the lack of detail, I was 1/2 asleep at 4am when it rolled in.

I have not rooted either phone. Still trying to find the update.zip file. Would it be on the phone or SD Card? I went into My File and now luck, i also us ES Explorer and tried a search but i just keeps running. Any other ideas how to find the .zip file?

I read about a similar issue where the problem was that the update.zip was missing the ".zip" part. It should be on the SD. Could you try mounting your phone (not to be confused with humping it) and see if you have a file on your phone just called "update" with no file extension? If so, try copying it and renaming it on your computer, then try to run it.

Me too! I can say I downloaded my froyo in the bathroom.

I really dont feel like going to a repair center to get this thing switched to 2.2. But whatever has to be done, will get done. Thank you Welliverm for staying on the phone so long to resolve this problem.

Yeah, not to mention those of us who need to cover our tracks that we rooted. Would prefer to solve @ home as well.

Still on the phone Samsung Tech level 3 (waste of time) could do nothing and said i can send it to them and i would have my phone back in 2 weeks. I was like sure thats awesome 2 weeks and no phone!! YOu F'ing crazy! Now Sprint wants to charge me $35 to swap out the phone. This is going to get ugly and i'm about to go off!!

That's messed up. My sprint store replaced the whole upper half of my phone (the non-keyboard half) just cos I had some dust under the screen, and I didn't even have insurance....and had already had it for a couple months.

For thoise looking for the update.zip?

Froyo 2.2 DL05 update for intercept

It looks like it is indeed a 49.5mb file, but I did ask in the thread to be sure.

Awesome.

So I have the zip on my phone, but my own instructions for booting into recovery mode aren't working. Anyone?

I found a different button combo on the developers forum, but the thread starts talking about it bricking your phone unless you jump through all these hoops.....so I'm afraid to try it.

Edit: I tried holding the bottom left and right buttons plus volume down, and that worked. Update still failed cos Sprint Zone is missing.

Sorry for the dp action, but I restored sprint zone with titanium backup, and that didn't work. I'm gonna have to factory reset my phone.

What's the easiest way to make a list of what's on my phone, and/or back it up, to make easier to restore all my apps (or at least app data/bookmarks/etc)? Is there a program for that?

I'd be happy to use titanium backup but I didn't know if it was safe to restore apps from a different OS version to a new OS version.
