New found love for my Moment!

First I want to say thanks to the androidforums users. With the help of several posts and many users, I got 2.1 installed on my Moment. I had a bit of a scare when it wiped the existing (1.6) and failed during the install so I got the broken connection icon for awhile. But you all got me through so thanks!

I always did like this phone, even with it's little quirks. But now with 2.1 on it, it's like a new phone again. I love it!
Seems like there is a lot of Moment haters on here and I don't get it, but to each his own I suppose. I have not rooted or hacked the phone in any way, just always kept up with the OTA updates and then flashed it with the manufacturers release of 2.1.

Since the upgrade, I think I will definitely keep this phone another year now.

That's what I thought when I got the 2.1 update in Sept.... now I'm back to hating this POS. I simply cannot justify all the "little quirks" that are hindering my ability to use the phone. Missed phone calls because the screen won't react, or even change from a different task; the failure to notify me (with sound) that I have a new notification; the crappy battery life with ALL POSSIBLE tasks killed.... I'm fed up. Just wait til 2.1 starts failing on you. I give it 4-6 weeks.

I'm glad you're liking your phone and that this forum was able to help. There are some bitter Moment users out there, there are bitter users of almost every device. The Moment was a decent device that barring one major flaw would still be among the better Sprint Android offerings. The data lockup bug is its Achilles heel. From what I've seen, the lockup bug will only hit the majority of Moments after quitting a wifi session and even then can be avoided with a quick reboot. I consider it inexcusable that Samsung was never able to completely fix the issue. While far from perfect, during my year of Moment ownership I had fun. It was way less frustrating to own than the Touch Pro it replaced! Enjoy and good luck.

Pastafarian, I see that you now have an Epic and an Evo in your house. I'm eligible for an upgrade in February, and I'm considering the Epic, because of the slide-out keyboard. But having suffered through the Moment lockups like everyone else, I'm very reluctant to buy Samsung again. What has your experience been with the Epic? Has Samsung (and perhaps Sprint) learned from the Moment's mistakes? More importantly, are there new bugs to be concerned with on the Epic?

I will say that the frequency of data lockups has dropped a lot since the last update was released. The problem hasn't been cured, and probably never will be...but at least it's reliable enough to get me through the next 100 days or so.

The Epic is pretty solid, far better than the Moment for sure. The only major bug is the well documented gps cache issue. It's annoying, but not a deal breaker and not remotely close to the severity of the radio lockup issues on the Moment. The main concern to me is that the issue has been apparent since launch and still no fix. That the Epic is still on 2.1 while the Evo has been on 2.2 for months is also a concern. Just like with the Moment, Samsung is behind the competition when it comes to issuing updates. February is a long way off and there will probably be a few new choices either available or on the horizon so zeroing in on the Epic now is premature at best. Certainly, if Samsung hasn't released 2.2 and fixed the gps by then, avoid it. I don't know your history, but I was a "needs hardware keyboard" guy before I got the Evo. Surprisingly, I don't miss the keyboard at all. The trade off of slightly easier text entry vs. a more solid pocketable phone turned out to be worthwhile for me. YMMV.

Also glad to see another happy moment user. I love my moment and the only reason for an upgrade for me to the Epic or possibly other phone is to have a newer better performance experience. My moment will still be used on Wifi and whatever else I want. I also have a game gripper so no sense in wasting that.

Some people got bad hardware but most of the issues were caused by software. This device was obviously pushed to the marketplace and released without proper testing.

Look into rooting next, I finally have my Moment close to my initial expectations of the device.

I went through some troubled times with my Moment as well. I probably went through 4 ROM's before I found one that worked for me. I'm not an expert on any phone by any means but I've learned how to troubleshoot myself out of some tight spots. And I've had some bad ROM's that were unstable and had crappy battery life.

I've installed 2.1 DE03 and then went to Joey's Kitchen for Vampirefo-SDX-2.0.7 (root and support for tether).

This has worked by far the best for me and I can honestly say I have no issues. Everything works great including my huge galleries. I just reboot once in a while and clear the Dalvic Cache periodically.

I want my 11yr old son to have a love for his new Moment. I tried to sell my old one a few months ago and it didn't go as I had hoped, so I swapped for a mint refurb and I am giving it to him for Xmas.

Now, because I am out of the loop for rooting and modding, can anyone tell me, in a very summed up and concise manner (simplest for you and for me) what the newest and most effective ROMS are for this thing. Obviously, more than anything else, I just want to avoid any lockup issues... so obviously I will not be connecting it to wifi anytime soon.

Ti-X Moment Rom 1.5.2 OUT and Better then ever

I Use the non Jit Version cause the Jit has always been very unstable in my opinion ..
It's fast, simple and supports wi-fi tethering.
The only thing I don't like is the 3d gallery which I have replaced with the stock gallery.

There's also the radioactive Froyo rom which also is unstable and always changing which is a good thing if you like to spend time updating re-flashing and stuff... I don't! lol.

Thanks! Yeah, this is for my son so i would like to do as little maintenance on the ROM as possible. This, as you have pointed out, means that I want nothing to do with JIT. I also want something as stable as possible, so thank you, I will look into it!

Hey critic, To be completely honest with you I have gone without an actual rom and simply applied DJ07 update, Inxane 0.5.5 kernel, Stock deodex, reboot recovery and 5% mod and then apps2sd. It runs great I have plenty of space and no JIT to worry about. I use root explorer to get rid of what I don't want on the phone but also use LP to hide apps in my apps list that I dont use but have left on the phone like talk so the market functions. ROM's are here and there and though solid I like to know exactly what is and isn't included on my phone. Tix is really good though if you are considering going that route.
