i was thinking of buying a fascinate on ebay to tide me over until Verizon 4g phones come out and I had a few questions on the bln option built in some of the kernals out there. When the bln is enabled, does the backlight keys flash when you have a new notification or do they stay lit also does it light up all 4 softbuttons or is it just one button.

Thanks

Its in some roms not kernels, and its no longer being put in them the dev asked to not have them added in. but you can d/l it in the market. And all buttons stay lit.

Not exactly. The BLN code is in the kernel -- all the app (included in Clean .5 and before, but not after) does is enable or disable the setting.

A Captivate coder made an app for blinking BLN, but it doesn't seem to work on the Fascinate (may be Froyo vs. Eclair).

yup bln is a kernel inclusion....jt just happen to include kernels in his roms for dj05 up to 0.5 and included the app to control bln.

its easy to pick up the bln app through xda as well, thats where i got it ;)

That stinks. I would think blinking would be better than a the softbutton staying lit the entire time. Samsung shouldn't have cheap out on their phones and just included the notification LED like on all other android phones, it is not like it would have really costed them much more money to include it.

So none of the di01 roms can utilize the bln feature or app, correct?

The later DI01 kernels had BLN -- jt from 11/02 on (though I couldn't get it working with 11/16 Voodoo), and I think all the geeknik ones too. Mind you, if you're going to root and flash, there's no reason not to go DJ05.

Also, Blinky works now -- if you have a BLN kernel, of course.

yup, good info from s44 as usual :)

the dio1 kernels that had bln, mostly had them on by default...whereas in the last month or so they are off by default and you need either the app s44 linked, bln control from the market, or the older bln control app from xda

but yeah, if you are going so far as to root your phone and install custom kernels, there really isnt a good reason not to go to dj05

Well, I'll have to read up on dj05. I don't know anything about how to flash it or what it does yet. But thanks for the info so far guys.

Any big differences in the dj05 roms/kernels? I'll do my own research, but I know you guys are good at quick, helpful replies.

The roms are only different insofar as they are based on the fixes/updates in djo5

The non voodoo kernels i doubt you would notice a huge difference

Its the voodoo kernels were the difference is big as the dj05 voodoo kernels are voodoo 5.....dio1 voodoo is old and dated voodoo which is no longer particularly useful or usable imo
