By my estimation, it's the number of seconds until midnight, Jan 1. Probably just counting down the end of the year.

I wasn't trying to suggest anything. It was an invitation to think about it. I doubt Google would simply count down to the new year. I would be surprised if the counter reached 0 and then simply disappeared and nothing happened.

BTW, if you set your system time to Dec 31st just before midnight, it counts down to zero and disappears. Very anti-climactic!

Of course it would. You can't trick it that way. Something will get announced on January 1st (probably an official confirmation of the phone existing), and it will start selling late January.

You're really reaching on this one. If it was maybe Jan 4th at midnight, I might subscribe. But I seriously doubt anybody releases an official announcement on a holiday when pretty much every business is closed and people are busy with parties or hungover from the night before. You usually try to create your own thunder, not compete with a major holiday.
