Desire HD Battery Thread

The battery does evolve, MacBooks Pro got 7+ hours of battery life whilst other laptops were still struggling to get 2-3 hours and my MBP has lasted 9hours and 56mins of usage on one battery charge.

Same goes for the iPhone 4's lithium polymer battery.

You do realize that HTC could have fitted in a bigger battery in there and an AMOLED screen if they didn't release it 8 months after the Desire launch. 4-5 months could have gotten them the AMOLED screen and redesign of the internals allowing a bigger battery.

A battery hog screen like on the DHD needed to be at least AMOLED.

THERE ... your a mac fanboi, go play with your iphone and macbook and be gone.

Dia duit go leir

I've had my DHD for 3 weeks (bought SIM free) and was getting concerned about battery life as I barely seemed to be getting to 6 o'clock most days and that was with mainly general phone use, and some "light" surfing (facebook, gmail etc) and occasional use by my nephews of Talking Tom or The Big Fart Machine Button (which they love for some reason lol).
Yesterday morning I read this thread/forum and "tweaked" as recommended and I have noticed a drastic difference for the positive :)

Uptime Length: 24 hours (6hrs 25 awake)
Accelerometer: off
3G Or 2G: 3G (i think? .. now set for GSM only)
Wireless On: as needed (but kept on all night with only 10% over all drop in battery)
GPS On: off
USB Debugging: on
Automatic Brightness: Off
Network: Vodafone IE

Misc: I realised I was having wireless on all day even when I was on my laptop so added a widgets to turn mobile and wireless internet connections on and off as I want.

Of the 60% battery used so far
-73% has been used display
-9% has been used by cell standby
-7% by phone idle
-4% by Android System
-3% by wi-fi
-2% by Android OS
-2% by Calendar

But this is the first time I have not had to charge my battery overnight (at the minimum!) so I am well pleased.

Thank you all for the tips

Happy xmas :)

*sighs*

Here we go again.

No the battery doesn't evolve..technology around the battery evolves.

lithium polymer battery doesn't really mean anything at the moment. If you really buy into it being a better battery than anything else then you have been sucked into marketing.

Let me educate you.

you could have a 900mAh battery in a phone, doesn't mean its going to last any longer than a bettery at 3500mAh as its down to numerous things such as power management (sofrware), hardware management, the demand and strain on the application, etc etc

Also relating to comparing a macbook pro.

Are you trying to compare a macbook pro to a phone here?..because thats a hole you are digging which you ain't gonna get out of.

And the reason why macbook pro batterys perform well is because of the battery battery/power management on a laptop with power saving on graphics. But once again, just because you supposedly get 9 hours, doesn't mean everyone else gets the same as the bottom line is thats its down to the end user on how they use the device.

Now if you are going to compare an iPhone 4 to a Desire HD..Ok, i'll take tht on.

Lithium Polymer

Pros;
* Can be made in different shapes and sizes
* Its light and doesnt require metal casing around
* It's not flammable

Cons;
* More expensive than Lithium Ion
* Lower energy density
* Lower cycle count
* If you over charge, it can blow
* High cost to energy ratio

So putting into a reply for you..If HTC put in a Lithium Polymer battery in, there is no guaranteed performance increase, whilst also pushing the cost of the phone upwards resulting in higher contract and sim free prices...Not to mention long term users possibly having to buy an extra battery.

HTC could have put a bigger battery in, but they didn't. What they have put in, suffices. Move on.

You do understand that HTC actually switched their Desire handsets to SLCD's from AMOLED due to shortages with Samsung. Also confirmed reports were about on the net that battery performance was slightly better as the colours was not as vibrant.

If HTC were to put AMOLED screens into the Desire HD, you would have understand then, both the Desire Z and HD would have been put back, there would still be supply issues with the standard Desire, HTC would have had to go back to the drawing board as well, invest more money into planning again, which would then push the price up.

Also the screen is 4.3", not 3.5", 4.3 INCHES.

What do you expect?

HTC won brand of the year through customer contact and relations along with the products. They have announced on Twitter that there will be an update within the next couple of days which is more a "maintenance build" based on "feedback".

HTC (htc) on Twitter

Might want to stop digging son..because that rope can't pull you up now:cool:

THERE ... your a mac fanboi, go play with your iphone and macbook and be gone.

I'm actually more curious to whether he actually owns the device at the moment, because it comes across as that he doesn't and doing a far bit of guesswork.

Its a real shame HTC dont have you to provide this kind of informed and realistic insight. I mean what do they know, they only run one of (I think the) largest mobile device manufacturing buisnesses in the world! What could they possibly know about stock levels and production costs? Obviousley they need to scrap the entire DHD line because as you rightly pointed out it absoluteley had to have an AMOLED screen and is totally worthless without one! I really liked my DHD but now youve pointed all this out I'm going to take it outside and burn it for being the evil useless device that it is. Its not like its better than some phones in some respect and worse in others, no! Its clearly a complete abomination and the sooner the world is without them the better!

I hate HTC they are evil! they had the nerve to release a version of one of their existing devices in a different form factor as they have done several times already with previous lines of phones the bastards! I mean how dare they! how could they contemplate that there might be people in the world that wanted a desire with a larger screen! Dont they realise that LCD screens are utterly useless and in no way look almost idential to an AMOLED screen in day to day function! Dident they realise that 1 day of decent use is simply not enough for a smartphone battery and all other smartphones last like a week between charges and dont require any kind of powermanagement from the user whatsoever!

Totally unnaceptable! they are clearly worse than hitler!

Do you realize few big issues with your statement ?
  • There is AMOLED shortage, Samsung equals AMOLED manufacturing and the only clients they deliver now is - Samsung. Why do you think there are no AMOLED HTC Desires manufactured anymore ? Why do you think they switched to SLCD ? Because Samsung has no enough manufacturing capacities.
  • There is no 4.3" AMOLED screen whatsoever. 4" is the maximum Samsung manufactures now.
  • I'm pretty sure anyone at HTC is bigger expert in how to design phones than "THE ANDROID".

Off topic, precisely true with one exception of Dell Venue Android smartphone - 4.1" SMOLED screen. Wonder from where Dell is getting their SAMOLED screens (presume - they must already have stocked the screens long time ago) ?

I got my HTC Desire HD yesterday and didn't really charge it to 100% until late evening, so I didn't use it in a standard day.

Today was the first use, properly, and my stats were this:
Uptime Length: (How Long your battery lasted) - From 6.15am - 12.00am (5.45 hours) < 10% battery left
Accelerator: On
3G Or 2G: Strong HDSPA (H) at work, while travelling around (I work outside) I got a varied mix between no service (for a few seconds) to HDSPA/3G (most of the time)
Wireless On: Yes, for half the day
GPS On: No
Automatic Brightness: Whatever the default is, so 'on' and set to around 50% at a guess
Automatic Updating: On, using loads of apps from Facebook/Twitter/FourSquare to Market/EMail/Messaging/etc

Hope it will improve tomorrow, batteries tend to last longer after a few charge cycles and as the novelty of a new phone wears off. I will report back again tomorrow.

I've been hugely disappointed with the battery on the DHD. Time and time again.

Think I am going to stick with it till the iPhone 5 comes out, there are a few things it does better than iPhone for example web browsing and the customisation aspect.

Yesterday I took it off charge at 4.30am, must have done about 10 minutes web browsing and by 2.30pm it was at 18%

I do have push email running, as well as a few widgets but surely it should last longer than that

again as listed in this thread before if you have push stuff running and widgets it will chomp the bat life very easy. Do as most of us here do, turn off stuff you don't need when not using it.

Hi,

There are some very usefull tips in this thread that have enabled me to get a decent lifespan from my battery, however, recently I have noticed battery consumption increase rapidly to the point where I'm having to top up during the day.

Upon checking out what has been using up the battery, it seems that the Calendar is using on average 50-60% of my battery. This is still the case after I turn of auto-sync and background data sync.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, any advice?

Cheers

Ok, i've seen a lot of tips and tricks come by to enhance battery life. One i've been missing out on is the calibration stuff. I read somewhere that calibration of the battery with a complicated scheme of total depletion, total recharging, overcharging and waiting an hour would do the trick. To me it seemed rather weird so I did not try, anyone else did?

And then there's the story that Li-ion batteries seem to last longer after a few complete depletion and recharging. Though after a few months since purchase you should not have the battery completely depleted anymore cause this strains the battery. The latter seems backed up by a lot of data on the internet, but anyone know about their battery improving over time (like a month)? Ive had mine for only a week now, so I would not know..

The other weird thing is that display sames a big consumer of battery power even when the backlight is turned of I still get 30% battery use. And of course the OS. Is there a way to see what exact parts of the OS are using the power? That might prove fruitfull, the juice has to go somewhere right?

Thanks so far for all the tips (and partially the bashing, Spencer)

Cheers

just a rough example of my battery usage, i'm on 2.2 and no update is available (orange)

i turn everything off , just turn on when i use

phone was plugged in until 11am
used wifi for an hour or so, just to check email go on internet for a few minutes
I then took about 10 pictures a couple with flash on
went out and used bluetooth to stream audio to my car for about 45 minutes, screen locked
used sat nav for about 15 minutes,
turned on mobile data and did a bit more surfing,
at this point i got the 15% battery alert and it dimmed my screen and turned off my bluetooth streaming, i left it as i just wanted the battery to last
did another 5 mins browsing then just turned off mobile data and put it in my pocket
20 mins later im home (about 16:30) phone is off in my pocket, had to plug it in to turn it on.

I have no task killers or av , i dont use facebook or twitter or flickr, email accounts set to check once every 4 hours, i did have weather widget on my home screen, i wasnt using usb debugging.

so thats 5 1/2 hours use being very careful , terrible such a shame as everything else (almost) about this phone is awesome, might try a bigger battery if i can find one, definately getting a car charger though

Phone charged and used everyday since 20/12 but plugged in most of the time - today was the longest i have used it off charger as i moved it upstairs to charge while i sleep hoping it would last as long i as i would in the day, old phone would last 2 days from one nights charge - thats what i need

any advice much appreciated

Reposted from another thread

I've decided to post my stats up after continued concerns over battery life. Apart from on standby today I have checked my emails for 2 minutes and taken 30 photos (in quick succession over a 5 minute period. Stats are

Android OS 80%
Cell Standby 4%
Display 4%
Phone Idle 4%
Calendar 4%
Camera 2%
Android System 2%

Android System has been the greedy pig in this by far. Clicking on that brings up

CPU Total 6h 33m 52s

Data Sent 22.06KB
Recieved 339.71KB

Was unplugged for 10h 14m 9s, went from full charge to 3%

Something is seriously wrong!

-----------------
Well since then I have followed this guide TechCredo | How to Improve Battery Life on Your Android Phone: 19 Tips to Keep the HTC Desire Running a Little Longer

And have taken the following steps

Disabled always on data

Turned off Wireless network posistioning

GPS - done nothing

Bluetooth - wasn't on anyway

Brightness - turned off auto, set as low as I can bear it

Screen timeout - 30 secs

Live Wallpapers WiFi & Amoled N/A

3G - done nothing

Widgets - binned HTC FriendStream (as nice as it was). Just have clock widget and weather

Streaming - N/A

Battery Use - as above

Background updates - turned off apart from Google

HTC Mail - not set up, get mails through GMail (Push)

Weather - every 3 hours

Facebook, Flickr, Twitter - not touched yet

-------------

Any other DHD specific tips or anything I could have done better or missed out please

Just checked my battery usage for the first time since sorting out the sync issue with the new update.

The stats are as follows 23h 22min since charge. 22% battery still left
Display 59%
Cell standby 12%
phone idle 10%
Android system 7%
Wi fi 6%
Camera 2%
Android OS 2%
com.htc.launcher 2%.

Granted a big chunk of this time was overnight, but I have sent approx 30 texts. took about 7 photos with flash on. Facebook Surfed the internet for about 15 min. checked & updated very often throughout the day even uploading a few Photos to FB. watched a few videos etc from youtube.

It amazes me how much of an improvement the update has made to battery life. Whether this is all due to update or the fact that I have turned the HTC sense sync off due to the constant sync issue with the update.

Anybody else see big improvements, as I was struggling to get 12hrs prior to update.. well happy now...
