Opening .mobi files in Kindle for Android

I've got a few .mobi files that I want to open on Kindle for Android. I loaded them into my Kindle for PC but they're not syncing to Kindle on my Evo. I first tried putting them in the kindle folder on my SD Card, which didn't work. Is there any way to sideload .mobi files and open them in Kindle for Android?

Is Kindle able to read .mobi files?

iReader (full version in market) can do it

Kindle for android can only read books bought directly from amazon. You can use Aldiko for mobi and epub files. I use it all the time, its the same thing as kindle.

I just pasted text from a long article into OpenOffice, saved it as an odt file, used Calibre to convert the odt to a mobi file, saved it to disk, placed a copy in the Kindle directory / folder of my SD card (android Xperia X10), and started Kindle. The book is there and I can read it fine.

I did something similar for fbreader and aldiko and will compare, but it is definitely not true that the android kindle app can only read books from amazon.

Well they must have changed that in a recent update. When it first came out a few months ago, it did not support any outside ebooks in any format.

It is a simple operation. Transfer your .mobi file(s) from your computer to the Kindle folder on your device via USB cable or your wireless LAN.

Yes, just I did a .mobi file ("Max & Moritz") in the Kindle folder on SD card and could read it with the Kindle app

EDIT: I did the same with a big 14MB .mobi file (pharma compendium with internal text hyperlinks) and could read it with the Kindle app.
iReader is a good reader but it couldn't read this big .mobi file.

How can I update? Aldiko came with the phone pre-installed. Then I do not need to install Adobe PDF reader.

The update is available in the Market, but it is only available in the paid version. (Which is why I've switched back to the free version despite having purchased the app...the new version is very different and, if you just want to read unDRM'd .epubs, less convenient IMO.)

Just signed up to the forum for this specific problem - I have several .mobi files, mostly created using Calibre, and I am trying to get Kindle App on my HTC Desire HD to use them. I've tried copying them to the Kindle folder on my SD card, but all that happens when I run Kindle is that no books appear at all, and once I had previously downloaded were "Archived" and had to be re-downloaded.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Apologies in advance for my idiocy.

As I posted above I copied a "Not Amazon" .mobi file in the Kindle folder and could it read without problems.
But I did this after the last Kindle update. So I don't know if it was possible too before the update.

AFAIK, .mobi and .azw (kindle format) are almost the same. If you have any non-DRM file of either type, just rename it and see what happens. I had 1 or 2 non-DRMed .azw files, but they would not read on Aldiko. I simply renamed them to .mobi and hey presto - Aldiko imported them and they work fine.

Probably the kindle app reads only .azw files.

Right... breakthrough happened today... (As in, I realised I have special needs)

When I copied the .mobi filed to the /kindle folder of my SD card yesterday, I immediately tried to view the files on Kindle, and nothing was appearing, not even my Amazon downloads, until highlighted and re-downloaded from the archive...

Sine disconnected from the USB lead, and my phone re-scanning the SD card, both my test .Mobi files appear and are readable in Kindle App! The text formatting is a little bolder throughout, but it's more than readable.

I'm going to try a batch conversion bunch of PDF's I converted to .mobi later, and will see if it works also.

Yes, the SD card needs to be re-scanned after disconnecting from usb. It usually does this on its own.

Hi, after trying to be able to read .mobi files on my new Android 2.2 Desire HD, I've worked out the following:
Amazon Kindle will list and open the .mobi files placed directly in the root of Kindle. It won't search or open titles in subfolders or your My Documents directory.
File browsing software won't open the files.
HTC's Reader (My Books) won't see the files, nor will Aldiko.
It's great that I've worked out a way to read them but it is a huge annoyance that the files have to be in the root directory directly as I've copied thousands of files sorted into directories - \Author\Title - but to read them on my Android I have to pull them all out jumbled up into the root directory with no sorting, catalogueing or anything.
But at least I can read them now.

Yes, it does seem Kindle is messy in that way. Not only on the Kindle itself (all need to be in the 'Documents' folder, including your personal ones), but also for the Kindle apps on PC/Android, whatever. Probably following the current 'unorganised' trend - put it anywhere and use search to find it.

I would suggest using any of the free converters to convert .pdf/,mobi into ePubs and using Aldiko on Android, unless syncing is very important to you.

Hopefully they will improve the Kindle app/software soon.

Just to round up:
After the new update the Kindle app is able to read PDF

Same procedure as to import .mobi eBook: Put the PDF file in the folder 'kindle' on the SD card and you'll find you PDF eBook in your Kindle book shelf.

Hi. you need to disconnect your phone from your computer first. Then run kindle app and it will see any books you have just copied across. If you run the kindle app while phone is connected via usb and in disk drive mode, no kindle books will be displayed and all will be archived.

By the way, Latest Kindle app on android reads mobi files just fine.

how bizarre!
I just tried to stick some ebooks onto my galaxy s2 from another computer. they were .mobi files
the files on the computer tell me they can only be opened using microsoft works word processor. i tried opening these files on my phone and was unsuccesful. my phone only has "polaris office" and when i try to open the book file, it tells me "no application can perform this action"
so i decided to sign up to android forums to see if anyone can help....before i make my first post i notice the very first thread in the forum is titled "Opening .mobi files in Kindle for Android"

If you don't have the Kindle app (and an Amazon account) then you could install iReader or Cool Reader to read your .mobi files
Cool Reader is free, but iReader reads .mobi better IMO.

this is the only ireader i can find.
looks to me like it's for reading chinese books, is this the same app you're talking about?

Kindle's app is crap. Download "Cool Reader". It's free and reads virtually any file, anywhere it's stored.
