Sprint Unveils HTC EVO Shift 4G

We've got a forum set up for it already - some are discussing it in the Android Lounge as well.

HTC EVO Shift 4G - Android Forums

What's to hate? It's smaller, hard qwerty, no FFC - and a little cheaper.

For people with hard qwerty wants it's a great alternative to the Epic - a few less features, a few 1/10" smaller, a few less bucks.

If you were looking for the Evo successor, this isn't it.

I would've wanted it if it weren't for Swype technology. Now I see hardware keyboard as space they can use for better things (such as bigger batteries, image sensor, or whatever).

Right there with you. I was a diehard physical qwerty keyboard guy, until I got my EVO with SWYPE. Now, can't see myself going back to a bulkier phone, unless it's just as thin as the EVO (or thinner).

The only thing that concerns me is that I hope this isn't the only 4g phone sprint has got coming. It looks like verizon is making some serious strides with new upcoming lte phones while we sprint customers don't really have much to choose from. I mean seriously, the evo been out 7 months and the epic 4 and now we have the shift, is that it? I hope sprint drops some bombs at ces but as it looks right now verizon is gonna make a killing.

(Verizon's many compared to Sprint) Yep. I'm reminded of an Aesop Fable:
A lioness and a vixen were comparing their young. The vixen said how beautiful her litter of cubs were, and remarked sneeringly that the lioness only ever had one cub. "Ah yes," said the lioness, "but that one is a lion..."
Truth is that Verizon has more subscribers than Sprint, and each handset's costs have to be amortized against a projected sales base.

It's not a dog, I don't think - wait until the dev community gets their mitts on it - and works that G2-kinda magic.

It's just ... you know ... other.

BTW - Here's HTC/Sprint's next phone - complete with Froyo.

The entire Samsung Galaxy S crowd is crying for that and some have gone into acceptance.

Don't even go to their GPS woes.

This thing is out-of-box beating a lot out there.

Basically, the form factor of the Moment that WifelyMon still insists on carrying.

So - I show her this beast. She smiles and tells me she's finally decided, she's done with hard qwerty and wants an Evo now.

Well - there you are. Thought I'd have a lead-pipe cinched deal to get my mitts on one of these and make it nasty fast - but nooooooooo.

hahaha, my wife wants nothing to do with a phone purchase. she leaves it all up to me and then tells me how she hates it 3 months later... lol.

ok its not that bad, but she doesn't ever want to think about her phone. before or after a purchase so its always hard with her. and the last 2 phones she's had she wasn't very fond of.

so her ipod doesn't play nicely with her nike plus and audible books. the audible books get put into protection mode when nike plus is plugged in. ok no big deal, but after removing the books and re-installing them the ipod starts this clicking noise. itunes restore won't fix it but plugging it into my pc and formatting the drive and then restoring with itunes does.

so I said lets get you an Evo! she wasn't eligible for a full upgrade, just the 75$ credit towards a new phone. I didn't realize that meant no rebate either. well after a long 5 hour day on new years eve we came home with a brand new white evo at full upgrade and rebates. :)

I really think this is a great phone for those that are into qwerty keyboards. Anyone that was expecting a EVO successor so soon and after only seven months.... needs to wake up lol. I think this is just going to be part of the EVO line like Verizon is doing with the Driods. I'm not sure why they left out the ffc though. Be patient people...the next big thing for Sprint is yet to come.

You know, with my old Helio Ocean (featurephone) I was an emailing machine, that little qwerty was so nice - nothing like the smartphone qwerty add-ons. Gotta admit - when a hard qwerty's in use, you get more effective screen real estate for the text entry part.

I'd better stop before I decide to give WifelyMon my Evo and give one of these a spin!
