I am trying to unroot my HTC EVO 4G, and I am following the "Rooting for Dummies" guide, specifically section 5 regarding unrooting, and it does not list the hboot version that my phone has.

In the guide it lists:

REQUIRED FILES:

Download the PC3GIMG.zip that matches your HBoot Version on your device.

* PC36IMG.zip - HBoot 0.97 - S/W 3.29 or Below
* PC36IMG.zip - HBoot 2.02 - S/W 3.30
* PC36IMG.zip - HBoot 2.10 - S/W 3.70

However, when booting into recovery mode to find my current hboot version, this is what it says:

SUPERSONIC EVT2-2 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.93.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.07.28
Jul 23 2010,16:41:47

Can someone please tell me what file I should use in this case, and where I can find it?

Thank you and Happy New Year!

As long as you flash the unrevoked s-on tool, first, you can flash the 0.97 PC36IMG. Keep in mind that it will update you hboot to 0.97, obviously, and give you everything that came along with that OTA. If you want to keep that particular hboot, you can get the appropriate PC36IMG from here:

Supersonic Shipped ROMs - xda-developers

Thanks for the quick response! I ran across that page earlier and it looked like code from the SETI project!

I see a ton of files on that link you provided, but have no clue what each of the filenames mean, and hence no clue as to which one I should download. Is there an additional thread explaining the filename structure, or an easy explanation?

Also, you said if I wanted to keep that particular hboot (0.97), that I could. Does that conversely mean that I don't have to? I will probably reroot shortly after unrooting. I just want to unroot to be sure I am starting with a clean slate.

Base on that what should I do?

Thanks!

What do you mean by a clean slate? If you let me know what your ultimate goal is, I can probably give you some other direction if you like. Unrooting, then rerooting is almost never necessary unless you're taking your phone for service. Give me a few minutes, and I'll give you a little better explanation what each of those files in that link are.

My ultimate goal is to get a rooted phone that works! ;-)

I have installed a bunch of crap over the last 6 months, in no particular order, have no idea what I have installed, and now my phone is slow, emails notifications do not work correctly, actually nothing really works correctly. In my 15 years of experience with computers, it seems less time consuming, and gives better results when you just wipe an OS, and reinstall. Some of these newer viruses can take you hours if not days to uninstall on a PC, but you can wipe it and reinstall in an hour, which is kinda the same theory I am applying here. ;)

Ok, so each "OTA" is installable through two methods. By OTA, I mean the updates available from HTC/Sprint. These updates include hboot version, baseband radio version, wimax radio version, NV and PRI versions. Each one has a particular software version (aside from Android version). An example is the latest OTA which is 3.70.651.1. Each one of those downloads, when flashed, would be like starting from scratch with that particular OTA.

So, each particular OTA has two methods of installation. One is a PC36IMG file, which is a special file that can be flashed from hboot. I'm probably going into stuff you already know if you've read about unrooting, but these PC36IMG files can contain a lot of different updates, but these are specifically the contents of an OTA with a clean slate, stock ROM. The second method is the official RUU. It's an executable file that you run from your PC when the phone is connected via USB. The most common and safe method of unrooting is by the PC36IMG file method.

So, you always have a specific hboot version on your phone. When you accept an OTA, you get the new hboot from that OTA. With the exception of downgrading to the eng hboot (I won't go into detail here), you can't flash one of these PC36IMG files (or RUU) that is based on a hboot older than your current version, but you can flash one based on a newer hboot (as it would be the same as accepting an OTA, basically (well, not quite, but with the same result). Anyway, you currently have hboot 0.93. That means you can flash the PC36IMG file based on 0.97 since it's newer. To be honest, that's probably your best bet. There's not much of a difference between the two. Generally, I don't recommend updating hboot if you can help it, but I'd say there's not a significant difference between 0.93 and 0.97.

All that being said, now when you look at that one post, you know that there are two links for each OTA. A PC36IMG version and a RUU version. If you want to figure out which one you need, on your phone to go menu->settings->about-software information. You can find you baseband version, there. Find the appropriate PC36IMG version (not RUU) in that post for your baseband version. That is what you'd flash.

Maybe that was more information than you wanted, but it may come in handy one day.

Haha, I see where you're coming from. You must have used Windows an awful lot :p.

Having root gives you the ability to "start over" without unrooting. You can just perform a factory reset, which will *not* unroot your phone. It will take you back to the way your current rom or stock rom was the day it was flashed, but it doesn't change s-off status. I, personally, would recommend you take this time to consider flashing a custom ROM. When you do that, you wipe data, which will give you a clean slate of sorts, plus all the benefits of a custom ROM. There is a great deal of information in the Rooting for Dummies sticky in this section. Not only can you start over with apps/settings, but you don't have to deal with bloatware, etc.

To be perfectly honest, if you want to keep root, but want a fresh start, just do what I have suggested. I, of course, can only give you my opinion, and you're welcome to do whatever you like.

LOL! Yeah I have used windows A LOT, and I have A LOT of family members who use windows. The ironic part is I started out using slackware version 1.0 back in the early 90's, and somehow ended up programming on windows machines for a living!?

I have installed some custom ROM's, and some lauchers, and themes, and.... Thats where I start getting confused. ;-)

In your opinion what are a couple of the most feature rich, stable, and heavily developed/supported mods out there?

Thanks for all your input. Its appreciated! :)

Haha, it sounds like you have a pretty good grasp on what you're doing at least. There's just so much information out there, that I can understand how you can get confused.

That's a pretty difficult question to answer as, again, there's so much out there. Some of the more popular ROMs would be (in my opinion):

Cyanogenmod (AOSP based, so 4g doesn't work (yet) or HDMI)
Myn's Warm
Fresh
Calkulin's Evio

You can find them all in a full list here:

HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

You have a pretty old hboot, so I know all the above will work for you, but have you ever updated your radios, etc? Most ROMs are being updated to the 3.70 sw version. You don't need to mess with hboot, but if you haven't updated radios, you should before using ROMs based on 3.70. You can find them here:

[ Radios ][ 12-17 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

You flash them from recovery just like any other mod/rom.

If you decide to flash any ROM, when you wipe data (which you need to), then flash the ROM, you basically get a clean slate to work off of. What have you flashed before? Were you not happy with what you've tried?

I think I flashed Vaelpak originally, and then I recently tried Cyanogenmod, and that made everything all screwy, so I restored a backup with Vaelpak. I cant really say that I did or did not like either of them as I really havent put much effort to getting my phone where I would like it to be. Basically I am looking for something clean looking, speedy, stable. As far as features my area should be getting 4G within next couple months, other than that I use it tether, but I paid for pdanet, calendar, gmail, exchange, navigation, evernote, mint. I guess I dont do as much as some people, but what I do do, I would like to be a clean fast experience. I dont even know if that made sense. Its late, and I need to stop playing PS3, and go to bed. LOL.

I will take a look at all the info you gave me in the morning, and start working on getting my phone to where I want it. Thanks for you help and the laughs. I will let you know where I am at tomorrow, and feel free to give me more advice or recommendations on apps, mods, themes, etc. ;-)

Thanks again and gnight!

I really liked the look and feel of that CyanogenMod 6.1.2, but my wifi was acting up and so just saved it to go back to later until I found out some things. I guess it was acting up because I needed to flash the radios huh?

So I have finally had a chance to act on some of your advice and I am here to report success on the hboot update! I am now running v0.97! ;)

I also still have root, which is good news.

However, I also have several more additional questions! :D

Sprint is asking me to perform an OTA for an voicemail update. I know in the past I had fixed this by turning off automatic OTA's, and also by downloading a hacked version of the OTA so the message would go away.

Im just wondering if there is a standard procedure when it comes to us "rooted" users, and OTA's, and is there a central location that stores these hacked "OTA's"?

In the same line of questioning is there a central location I should be checking on a frequent basis for new radios, updates, the essentials, etc?

It sounds like there is a lot of compatibility gotchas when doing this stuff, and I am just wondering if there is a dummies guide for this also? :p

For instance you mentioned several already:
It is better to stick with an older hboot version
Current rom developers are upgrading to 3.70 software
Cyanogemod doesnt currently support 4g or HDMI

How does one keep informed of this barrage of information without having to spend hours a day pouring over threads?

Thanks for your help!

1) You can just install the voicemail update. I don't think you can make it go away. It won't affect root in any way. I accepted it on a custom ROM, even, and it didn't matter. I use google voice, anyway, so...

2) There's a difference between an OTA and a voicemail update. A full on OTA will (generally) update hboot, radios, and sw version. You don't want to accept these while rooted. As I've said, it's best to flash a ROM based on the new sw version, and update your radios manually. Don't touch hboot. See the links I provided for up to date info on these.

3) The Rooting for Dummies guide has a lot of good information in it beyond just how to root. Also, check some of the other stickies. There's useful information in them.

4) As for compatibility issues, just make sure you do your research either here or on xda before making a single change. Most stuff is pretty well documented if you know where to look. If you're ever confused about something, you can always feel free to PM me. I'll always do my best to answer any questions. Or if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find one.

OMG Everyone is always saying dont install the OTA!! You will lose root. I cant lose root to save my life!! S is on now but all my root privileges are intact. Im downloading the pc36img 3.70.651.1 to flash it. I downloaded a different pc36img though the writer said it was a stock evo.

I just want to go stock evo so I can take phone in to sprint. Its possessed. Apps open on their own as if someone is pushing the screen. Photos scroll on their own and photos are selected and once was almost uploaded to fb. wth! But I cant take it in unless I have a simple stock rom etc. I used to be so concerned about losing root. I cant shake it.

Tried ota update several times and it leaves me with yellow triangle, white exclamation and smug android character grinning knowingly.

So here goes flashing this pc36img linked above in my 12th hour of working on this. Maybe I will lose root and get back to stock. My home net connection is so slow Im downloading it using phone ironically.

that sounds more like a software issue. we can fix that there is no need to take it in. but that is up to you. if you want to you may have to run unrevoked to get s-off again. but definitely not a hardware issue. now that you are rooted the only time you should take your phone in is if it is a hardware issue.

Its baffling me. Ive installed a couple of different roms and at first its fine than slowly it begins to become possessed again. It started out as a dead zone on the R when the phone was in horizontal position. I downloaded 'draw' to pinpoint it. At first it was a deadzone when i drew on that area. Then the line would do wacky stuff over that area. Then it began to draw straight lines over the dead area as If it was fixed.

Actually it started ...are you ready? And im not kidding. It started when I was watching tale of a vampire - tom cruise etc. It was like someone was touching the screen so that the menu would appear and then touch it again and the menu would disappear. Repeatedly.

Then the R problem. It seems software related since when I wipe or install a rom it stops. But then it starts again, in the same area. It results in the whole screen freezing. Which makes me think its hardware. But why does it stop. Thats what baffles me. If it was hardware it would seem to constantly do it. Reboot stops it too for a bit.

I was thinking it could be a virus too.

Or at the extreme remote access. I was downloading the pc36img and the download was clicked and then cancel was clicked. But these were all in the same vicinity of the screen.

There is no visible screen damage. I thought ther was a nick there but it wiped off. I downloaded the color cards, green, blue etc which are supposed to indicate screen damage. None shown. Baffled.

Your suggestions are welcome.

edit: I think I might have installed a shift rom! Which would explain keyboard failure. Idk.

and you tried flashing other roms? wierd. are you wiping dalvik cache cache and data? weird that it keeps coming back like that. maybe unrooting might help then. i never heard of that issue before.

I wiped dalvik repeatedly. I wiped cache. I wiped all data and formatted several times. In between new flashes. I do think the last flash I had was wrong. I googled the numbers and it brought me to a different evo type thread. (the one with the folding keyboard)

I flashed one from android developers just now. And for the first time since turning s-on the root program super user is gone.

Now, like last night, Im playing the waiting game. Last night after a new rom it was fine for about three hours. Then....

even weirder it would twitch the home screen as if you were holding your finger on the screen and twitching it back and forth. It increases it frantic behaviour until the screen locks/freezes. Then to bring it back I have to just hit the power once so screen goes off and sometimes that would unfreeze screen.

Reboot brings it back to stability for 20 or so minutes after the initial 3 hour peaceful period.

Right now I have the 'all apps' screen up. That way if there is a random 'press' it will pick an application and I know its still wacked. I hate going to the store.

Theyre newbs there. Im no genius but I seriously had to explain to a tech that holding the home screen doesnt show all running apps but it shows the last six apps for ease of switching. They were under the impression that the EVO could only run 6 apps at a time.... I then clicked about ten and brought up a task killer to show them all the running apps. There was about 20. But that was a year ago and I digress.

Pray to the kernel gods such that the soul of my evo is freed from its reigns of random clicking.

The best part of this ordeal is the smoothness in operation immediately after a wipe. Course I cant get any work done on it as it seems a waste to set it all up merely for the tech to rotely apply the 'wipe first and see what that does' method.

odd i would just unroot your phone and see if you can replicate it. if you can then i would show a tech and have them fix it. they most likely will do a hard reset on it. DO NOT LEAVE THE STORE UNTIL YOU KNOW IT IS FIXED. i guarantee you that the hard reset will not fix it. it is similar to doing a factory reset which seems like it does nothing for you as the problems returns.

So far nothing - smooth as butter. Unrooted with a 2.2 - well see pic for specs.
