I fail to see how that would work. There has to be an ISP somewhere in the mix for there to be Wi-Fi. The only place Google offers free WiFi is in Mountain View, CA. Supposedly we were suppose to get it here in SF, but I think its dead in the water at this point. A cell phone that only works when in range of a Wi-Fi signal that you have access to pretty much kills the whole point of having a cell phone... so you have to have a plan with a carrier. An unlocked GSM phone that will work with either T-Mobile or AT&T seems the most likely scenario. (Admittedly, if they go the VOIP only route, it seems like a good deal when you consider that for $40 a month T-Mobile has a unlimited no-voice data plan).
Yes, I know about the blown SF deal...I was there. Bummer. But again, there was a reason that Google came calling to San Francisco. They are always forward thinking. Just like Google made an offer to SF, they can also cut deals with other cities...everywhere. And they are the ISP as the wireless provider. It's down the road apiece but, it's as clear as day what they're planning, LOL - We don't really think that Google was just being nice to San Francisco, do we? There is always a plan...always.
I'm not sure what GV/GW is.
GV = Google Voice. GW = Google Wave -
What we have to look at is the big picture. Google purchased Grand Central which became Google Voice. They added fantastic functionality to Google Voice, making it a mobile killer app (Invites are scarce as you know). Now, they are coming out with their own branded mobile phone. You don't think that they have a plan for their own service? I never sleep on Google. I watch their moves, it tells you everything.
They should do something, this is a nice phone that's getting bad press because of only have 1.5 and TW. Unless they do something I don't think its going to be a successful product.
