From what I understand is that its not risk free? I used to mess with the files on my blackberry non stop because I could always get the software back on? I read several places that their are several risks here even when using a full backup with nandroid. Correct me if I am wrong please, I am considering doing this to flash to 2.1, but am a little scared to.

Also, if I root does this disable my future offerings of OTA updating?

I had mine rooted very shortly after it came out. I also updated to the newest software 2.0.1 before it was officially out for the Droid and I am now run 2.1 before it is out before the Droid and will most likely be running a moddified version of 2.1 until a new version of android with newer features comes available.

There's risk with the 2.1 install ... but rooting alone is pretty close to "risk-free". I haven't heard of anyone bricking a DROID just from attempting to root. Have you?

Rooting alone does not disable future updates. But you would probably want to do that anyway ... like the rest of us "rooters". Here's a link to a post that 'splains what file needs renamed, and how to do it. ;)

It's too simple and riskfree NOT to just do it. And, it's really fun to make your DROID truly "your" DROID.

It's not 100% risk free, but maybe about 98% risk free IF YOU FOLLOW THE STEPS EXACTLY.

I love making it truly "mine."

2.1 blows 2.0 away. Just the way you bring up the app menu on that weird virtual conveyor belt is so cool!

I have zero issues with GPS (works flawlessly), zero issues with bluetooth (except for lack of voice dialing STILL).

Photo Gallery is BEAUTIFUL.

Web browsing is FASTER.

I LOVE MY DROID!

(I have own custom boot animation, too!)

This depends.

You will get the prompt for OTA update. BUT, if you accept, you will most likely lose all the rooting fun you put on your phone, and you may not be able to root again until someone hacks the new update.

That's my understanding, anyway. Many are going to refuse the official 2.1 update, since a lot of devs will be busy finding a way to be able to install the cool things that our rooted 2.1 doesn't have, if any exist and if you understand what I'm saying. :p

where do I find all the info on rooting and getting 2.1 and such?

I would love to see a ROM development support section here in the Android forums but in the meantime P3Droid turned me onto the Alldroid(dot)org forums. I dont like the site near as much as the Android forums here but I gotta get my 'fix'.

Tell me! What's so cool about it!!!

I'm always on the look out for the "next best thing", lol.

You dont have it so that makes it the coolest flipping thing in the world right now! :p jp. I am sure you have already seen the screeniesbut the new Gallery is the shiznit for sure. New default home with 5 screens and card view at the bottom, animated LIVE wallpapers that arent just animated they are aware of and react to their surroundings  , new app menu which is very cool in itself but I kinda missed the roll up app menu at first but its all good now.

Still very much beta and there are a few tradeoffs but worth it imo.

What steps would I take if I wanted to go back to the official firmware without bricking my phone? Have you read that anywhere?

When you follow the walk through the first thing you do after rooting and installing Droid root helper is make a backup up your current system img so if anything goes wrong you will have it to flash back. I backed it up and backed up the backup as well. :D

Havent actually used it yet though... so I am not gonna promise you that it works but it should, lol.

I had to reroot several times. The super permissions app was showing up in my apps and everything just fine but I dont think my phone was rooting. So I just kept rooting until it worked.

So far so good, it had a slow start but all seems well for the most part. I am not looking for whatever I need to do to get rid of some of the os apps like amazon mp3 and stuff

You are describing the 2.1 I've got in MY rooted phone. You said it was "Greek" thing or something??

What tradeoffs have you seen? I haven't seen anything. I've left 2.01 WAAAAAAY back in the past.

:D

OH you've already done it then. The greek revisions are just further refinements of the 2.1 dump.

Tradeoffs would be the hardware KB backlight not working , then there was a fix but the light was always on. Now it is supposed to be fixed and it does turn on now but only stays on for about 3 seconds even when your typing and even it total darkness.

Also the Live wallpapers are flat out amazing but make returning to the home screen lag terribly and I do get a couple of random reboots a day , nothing too serious.

Last but not least , you will have problems downloading apps you have purchased if they have Google copy protection because the market see's this ROM as not officially approved. I lost Pure Messenger and Picsay Pro to name a few.
