Help Tales of Shifty SD card woes

So I won't bore you with all the issues I had actually GETTING my Shift, since it's not the issue at hand, but it was something else.

So, you can imagine, that I was pretty psyched about it. I charged it up and it flew! so much faster than my Hero- which I had purchased in August with the intent of replacing if these Knight/Speedy/Shift rumors ended up being true.

3 days later I got myself a used 32 gb Kingston MicroSD card and took everything off my 16 gb Sandisk, stuck it on there (plus some more music) and.. disaster. My phone was being crazy- my custom notifications were still showing up but playing the wrong music, apps kept disappearing- it was crazy. So I bit the bullet and wiped the card with an app I found (forget the name) and, JUST TO BE SAFE, factory restored the phone itself. Why did I do that, you ask? Well, the issue seemed to persist even when I erased the card completely on my pc, so I was afraid that the transfer of app data or something (OK, so I sound like an idiot- I'm a NOOB fer goodness sake!) had caused issues.

All seemed well until my phone, today, wouldn't let me take any photos-it kept saying my file permissions were wrong. I did some lurking here and saw that I wanted the permissions to be drw. They were! the only thing that seemed off was that the file on the sd card was "dcim" instead of "DCIM" as it had been on my last phone.

Using Astro, I erased the dcim file and, lo and behold, after opening the camera app it let me take a picture. looking in Astro I found a folder called "DCIM" and felt very proud of myself.

Until I went to my gallery and saw a little grey box instead of the photo I wanted.

Confused, I tried to take another picture and it worked fine. I closed the gallery, waited and looked again- still a grey box. I decided to deal with it later and opened GDocs to retrieve something I needed only to be told "App is not on SD card" or somesuch. Even though I later looked on Astro and it was there.

GDocs still won't open.

Another issue I'm having is that in my music player, but not in the folder itself, there is a double of every song and it says it "can't play that type of audio file."

It seems to me that I did something stupid with the SD card and would love some help. I realize that this post probably belongs elsewhere, but as I'm new to the site I have no idea where to put it.

Thank you for any help you may be able to give!

I'm not sure, and wouldn't want to say the sky is falling on you - but - I do seem to recall several us helping others to chase down 32 GB card woes, with formatting the whole bit, only to find they were counterfeit.

Not sure how that works or if my memory's tangled.

However that worked - a lot of people were taken in and it was totally non-obvious.

See below, read carefully... ok, kinda carefully...

Kingston 32GB SDHC (Class 4) problem [Archive] - iAudiophile.net Forums

This one says that the firmware on the card can be faked to pull this stunt off:

Here's the formatter for Win users (I'm on a Mac, myself, so yeah, useless for us without Bootcamp, Parallels or VMWare):

SD Formatter 2.0 for SD/SDHC - SD Association

Have your tried reformatting it on the Mac as FAT32 using Applications -> Utilities (folder) -> Disk Utilities?

Oh - for card / file capacities, see also -

Yeah... just ordered one from Amazon.
But the sites you sent me to don't have anything for Win 7, which is what my laptop runs.
I want to verify this 100% tonight so that I can cancel the amazon order if it turns out that it's not fake and just an issue I somehow created.

I did what you said with Disk utility, but am not sure that that is a definite.

SO... I've re-formated it on my Win 7 device and it is still coming up 30.4 GB.
I am now running H2Testw, which was recommended in one of those threads you sent me. What do I do if it's NOT fake?!!
Will keep you informed.

Then reformat after that with your phone's software.

That should also pre-create the right directories to kick things off anyway.

For your sake, I hope it's not fake - but I think you also saw that in those threads, others reported those same symptoms.

One step at a time.

docss26 - That one - SDHC - I should know off of the top of my head. Long day, drawing blank. Somebuddy else surely knows.

docs- all the SD cards I see for sale that say they work with the Shift 4g are sdhc, the card I'm having trouble with is SDHC...

Mon: I backed up all my apps and such... you're saying that if the card turns out to be real, I should put it back in my phone, let it get formatted and THEN replace/add any of the files I have backed up? what if they're the ones causing the issues?

Reformat within phone.

Add nothing yet.

Just use. Take a few pictures, do they come out okey dokey?

If problems come back - it's the card.

If problems don't come back - move a few files back, see what happens.

If still good - restore files.

SDHC - geez, that sounds right...

Doh!

That's just a size spec.

Nope - http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-support-troubleshooting/141369-how-fix-froyo.html is liable to be your best friend.

It gives details for backup / restore of your phone (hey - c'mon, we've all had one fail, get dropped in the sink, lost or stolen - so you want that procedure) - and once you have a nice, simple recovery regimen, doing a factory reset is painless and you don't lose your stuff.

It's a little tangled to read, sorry about that, because it has instruction both for permanent root and out-of-the-box stock, and for the latter, gives you options to do more work and backup most stuff for free, and options on how to make life easy by spending like 5 bucks (easily worth your time).

In addition, it suggests some setting to enhance overall performance (although the Facebook stuff is undoubtedly stale, FB's just a moving target to me).

Finally, it gives the link to fix htc sense itself if that ever messes up on you.

It's like your swiss army knife post, and was the result of the whole Evo community contributing what worked right. Many others with non-Evo-like HTC phones have also found it most beneficial.

This segued perfectly into my next issue.
My new card is here (32 GB, I need it for movies for my kids and [hopefully] HD video of my kids). and I want to move EVERYTHING from my card onto my phone. I don't want to lose my Angry Birds levels or my custom ringtones. Every time I try to do this I lose something.
Help.
