Just found a free program called Inserty on the marketplace. This program allows you to easily cut and past any predefined text, current location (address, coordinates, Google map link), current time, and just about any text based stuff or link to email, sms, Twitter, Facebook, you name it. This will save me lots of time in my emails. Hope you find it useful. I did

So will it allow you to copy text from within Gmail emails or not? My wife emailed me a tracking number and let me tell you how high tech it was to locate a pen, a piece of paper to write on and then hand key the entire thing back into my phone. Talk about copy/paste fail.

I really haven't used it to copy from within another program. The strong point of this program as far as I am concerned is to be able to add canned text with dynamic tags (like current time, location) when sending email, tweets, ect. I know that you can copy a paste using native android commands although it is a pain.

How does it differ from ClipStore? That's what I'm currently using for my canned responses and common items and it works pretty good.

I took a brief at ClipStore and from what I can see it doesn't have the dynamic tags (location, time, ect.) that Inserty has. Please correct me if I am wrong.

It does not but what is the benefit of these features? Clipstore only saves the last ten copies and I would rather have 20 if possible so how many does Inserty have?

Inserty doesn't appear to have any limit on the number of clips you can store - at least I haven't seen anything that indicates any limit.

Inserty isn't a cut/paste app, really, it just allows you to create blocks of text you can paste into text fields.

It's relatively convenient, but switching input methods twice (from current keyboard to inserty and back again) is a bit kludgey.

What the Droid really needs is a system like the Blackberry has, where you can define text replacements in a special dictionary...then you can type one or more letters you have defined and when you hit space it is automatically replaced by a text string you have set in the dictionary. Very slick, no additional keystrokes required. If a developer could create that on the Droid he/she could sell a lot of copies of it... <hint><hint>

I am one of the developers of Inserty and wanted to say "hi" to take part in the discussion and mabye get some good ideas for improvements. So let me comment on some things:

No, there isn't any limit. The clips are stored in a SQLite DB so the only limit is the size of your internal phone storage, which you probably won't be able to fill up with simple text messages

You are right, that is not very user friendly. Unfortunately, due to security concerns, Android doesn't allow to switch the IME programmatically. Therefore the only chance we had was to show the user the IME switcher dialog. Even so, i personally prefere the IME over going to home screen, starting inserty, selecting entry to copy to clipboard, ....

Now that would be really cool! You should encourage Google in putting this into the default virtual keyboard.

I was having a quick look at Clipstore after reading about it here. We were thinking about including this feature in Inserty as well. But it turned out that the only way to implement this is to constantly monitor the clipboard for changes. So this comes at a high cost, as the app would have to be awaken every few seconds resulting in battery drain. Would you donate battery life for this feature?

Is there a way to make moving items up and down in the list faster/easier? I created a new item, but it was painful to move it all the way from the bottom (where it is created) to the top of the list one move at a time. Can you implement a drag/drop option, or a numbering scheme?

I figured that wasn't your choice. Definitely IME is the way to go, keeps you in place, and the switch back dialog does appear automatically, which is nice.

Yeah - the auto-replace function on the BB was one of my top two or three features...not well known overall, but once you made use of it, it becomes hard to live without. Google, unfortunately, seems more interested in flashy UI and glitz than they do in core functionality at the moment...I doubt they would even look into this, given they aren't fixing BT voice dialing, email attachments, etc.

Wouldn't be a priority for me...but if you added it as an option, sounds like there are some that would like/use it.

Drag and drop is a bit hard to realise, and we are using the long press already for other stuff. But what about two arrows (up/down) on the right side of each item so you can quickly move single items up and down??

+1 for something similar to BlackBerry's AutoText. It saves SO much time, and there is no performance hit or slowdown. You type "idk" and out comes "I don't know." So handy! I guess neither of these programs are able to do something like that just yet, huh?

I'm itching to use Android, and this is really all that's keeping me back. Hoping someone can figure out a way to either edit the built-in autocorrect dictionary, or could make a third-party app similar to those found for the iPhone.

Not to hijack this thread, but another big +1 on some sort of autotext/text replacement app. Handcent has this functionality, so it's certainly possible, but it would be great to see it on a global level throughout Android.

If this application could be used for inserting detailed email signatures at a button press or two, it would be well worth it.
