Free SMS app?

Have the Motorola droid and searched around a bit. I'll come out and admit I'm a cheap skate and trying to save money on VZ nickle and dime approach (especially compared to Sprint).

I signed up for the lowest message plan, so looking for any free to send SMS apps that people use. I signed up for the google voice, but haven't been invited. I heard that has a way to send sms free as data.

I am aware of the various free sites on the internet via a browser and was wondering if anyone put together an app to use your contact list or be able to make a new one to send free sms (via data, not plan) that works well.

Most my friends have unlimited text so it doesn't bother them.

I have also read here and there that some of the instant messaging apps might be able to send a text to a phone number? Any luck with this? So far little info on this subject.

Thanks for the help or a point in the right direction.

You could try MessageNow. It is similar to BBM. It's probably not exactly what you are looking for, but it is a decent alternative if your friends have this app.

Here's the link on androlib for it. MessageNow v1.01 Application for Android | Social

Also, here is a link to the dev's official site. Enflick, Inc. - Textnow Unlimited

I hope this brings some sort of relief. Good luck.

The application that we really need on android is fishtext. It allows you to send sms messages over gprs for the cost of 2p. It worked really well on my old nokia I put 20 quid on it last xmas and that's basically a years supply of text messages (1000). To begin with vodafone didn't charge me anything because the amount of data was so small that it didn't show up. Recently vodafone have got wise and charge me 3p for the data in a text message. It's still small compared to usual text message prices.

The app is available on iphone, but they have no plans to convert to android (although I'm hoping they reconsider.)

Also, Google Voice

I'm not too sure about google voice. The nice thing about fish text is that when you open the application it accesses your contact list so that you can choose who to send a message to. Then you just type in your message and send it. You don't need to be connected to wi-fi in order to use this. You just need a phone that can access gprs. The message ends up coming from your mobile phone so that who ever you send the message to doesn't realise how you have sent the message. There are also no adverts built into the message.

Just offering up an additional free alternative. You are correct in that GV has certain limitations/drawbacks, however.

Does Spontalk work over Wifi? I'm looking for something that will bring messages through my cell# onto my phone via Wifi. I use Wifi at home all weekend in airplane mode and don't receive any texts from VM until I turn on the cell radio on Monday mornings. GV works great with friends and family, but not with anyone that uses my cell number.
