I guess this one is for those previous Hero owners that now have the Moment. I am quickly approaching my 30 days and see no immediate or near future updates from Samsumg that will address some pretty glaring issues with this phone. I am so desperately wanting to like this phone (and I do), but I can't get past these issues. Any thoughts or comments for me on things I should consider before switching to the Hero? I guess the biggest issue I have is that Samsung/Sprint just don't seem to be supporting the Moment. I understand that ALL new phones have bugs that need worked out, but who's working them out?

Can't really sway you one way or another.. depends on what you consider "pretty glaring issues".. To me they are nussances but do not hinder my use of the phone.. Try a CL14 kernel upgrade if you have a couple days and see if that helps out (has some CPU tweeks)

Definitely understandable. The Hero had issues day 1 also, but they took care of them quickly. My history with Samsung (Instinct) is that they do eventually take care of issues, but it takes them a while. I knew that going in when I purchased the Moment. For me I am going to stick with them. The only reason why is because I have a standalone GPS. (Sorry numus about bringing that up )

What is the CL14 kernel upgrade, and how do I go about doing it?

Ok, everyone says to use Odin to install this - where can I find this? Better yet, where can I find a step by step idiot proof guide on how to install this kernel on my device?
New Odin (v4.03)
As for an idiot proof guide.. Sorry there is still a little work to be done on everything and it isnt been simplified down all the way.. but it is getting there

Take it from someone who has owned a Pre, a Hero, and now a Moment, the Moment is the best of the three. Each phone has some ups and some downs, but the Moment is by far the most well balanced of the three. The Hero, in my opinion, was the worst of the three. The on-screen keyboard (and the phone in general) was laggy and made some annoying spell corrections. It was also aggrivating to try and use the Hero as a phone, which is made more annoying by the fact that the Hero is a phone first and foremost. The contact/dialer app was laggy, and I found myself frusterated when I was typing a phone number and the Hero would lock up for 5 seconds or more. Also, I personally think stock Android looks and functions better than Sense, and after looking through the Market, I was able to find widgets similar to HTCs which I use on my Moment. The only thing I can complain about with the Moment is the size of the phone. Sure, I could complain that the keyboard has a strange design, but at least it has a physical keyboard. Plus the Moments on-screen keyboard works better because for some reason, the edge of the screen on the Hero doesn't register presses, making typing that much more awkward. I could also complain that the Moment doesn't have a notification light, but the Hero really doesn't either because it only lights up green and it only blinks for 5 minutes before shutting off, which does little good.

Personally, I think the Moment is better than the Hero (in case I hadn't made that clear :)). My advice would be to either stick with the Moment or switch to a Blackberry for the highest functionality and support.

From reading some of the other posts you should use Odin2.98 not the newest version. Zefie and others have more details posted on samsungmomentforum if you need help. They also have a decent walkthrough not absolutely layman's terms. That maybe something I try to get done over the weekend and post here if someone esle doesn't get to it first. And the Moment is by far the best phone Sprint has out right now.

Like is always said.. you screw up your phone.. it isnt mine nor anyone elses fault.. It is your own.. you have been warned
I will attempt to spell it out as best i can.
This is all thanks to zefie and the rest of the people are samsungmomentforums for creating this procedure and currently working to enhance the phone

You MUST USE ODIN 3.98 (do not use 4.03) if you have CJ05 (the standard firmware that comes on the moment)...
You must also download the moment.ops file (it is avalible somewhere on samsungmomentforum.com but i really dont feel like tracking it down).
Once you have those 2 necessary pieces you are ready to rock and roll...
This is the steps:
1) Turn off the samsung moment (totally off.. hold power button and select power off)
2) Once the device is fully powered off.. Hold down the volume down button and camera button.. Then push and hold down the power button to turn the phone back on.. It should go into a screen with a giant blue disk and arrow and say Downloading... DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!!
3) Plug in the USB cable to the moment and your computer and make sure you are online.. Have it download the drivers from the web (it should be able to do this.. mine had no problem in windows 7) - This is the step that might cause some problems....
4) right click odin_Multi_Downloader_v3.98 and Run as administrator
5) The first box at the top left should say Detected (this means it sees your phone in downloader mode)
6) Go to Option and check the box that says One Package
7) Go to Select Ops and hit the button labeled OPS and find and select Moment.OPS
8) Below that at the bottom it shoudl say Select Integrated PAckage - Check One Package Option... Hit the One Package button and find and select SPH-M900_ZE02_KERN.TAR (the ZE0* will change depending on which version zefie is on.. This is also where you would select CJ05 if you wanted to flash the stock firmware on it)
9) Press the start button and it should do its thing.. reboot the phone and once the phone is back in android you can unplug everything and close odin...

NOTE: The download file for cj05 and zefie's kernels will be in a zip.. DO NOT USE WINZIP TO UNZIP THIS.. Just use the windows build in unzipper.. Once you get the tar file leave it alone.. you use it exactly as it is...
YOU MUST DISABLE Samsung New PC (or whatever it is called)before you do this...

Edit:
I am in the stealing mood so i must give credit here:
From HOKANSOC's signature on samsungmomentforum http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/r...-things-new-screen/?action=dlattach;attach=95
that is for the moment.ops file

From Zefie (same place) http://fileserv.co.cc/zefie/android/samsung_moment/ that is for a copy of odin.. Also if you go into ROMS/Stock you will see SPH-M900_CJ05_Rel.zip THIS IS THE STOCK FIRMWARE! If you mess up anything you can use this firmware to reflash the moment to out of the box... DO NOT TOUCH THE CL14!!!!
If you go into ROMS/Custom This is where Zefie puts his kernel updates.. They are labeled with ZE0*

Flashed my moment with the new rom.... Seems more responsive.

MAN. Heres an update: after removing the NFL crap, Amazon, and Nuance, Moxier... THIS THING IS FAST! I feel like my moment is on crack with all that memory freed up. I got rid of the weather channel app too! Woohoooooooooooooo! Like 60/70 megs of freed up RAM

Am I correct in assuming that I download Odin and ops to my desktop computer, NOT my Moment?
Where do I place the drivers tar file? On my desktop computer or on my Moment?
Do I unzip the tar file at any time during the flashing process or do I leave it zipped?

Thanks!!
Ok.. ODIN and ops and TAR all go on your computer..

Wait a sec.. sounds like one of my harddrives in ym server just crashed..
Edit: Weird sound. no idea what th ehell that was but drives seem fine..
DO NOT UNZIP THE TAR.. leave it in all its TARRY goodness..
They all go on your computer.. ODIN takes care of everything for you (it pushes the tar file over and untars it and everything)

This is what I have done so far:

1. Downloaded Odin and ops pkg to my desktop computer.
2. Downloaded SPH-M900_ZE02_KERN.TAR to my desktop computer.
3. Started Odin 3.98 (in administrator mode) as my phone is stock cupcake CJ05.
4. Rebooted my Moment into Downloading mode.
5. Plugged Moment into Desktop computer using Moment's usb connector.
6. Odin will not detect my Moment. That is, there is No yellow box as indicated on Index of /zefie/android/samsung_moment - FileServ which is supposed to indicate that Odin has detected my phone.

I assume since Odin does not seem to detect my phone that clicking START button would do nothing.

SAmsung New PC (or whatever it is called) must be turned off.. also you might have to remove the devices from your device manager and let them reinstall the drivers... that has been a problem also

What is Samsung New PC? Is it on the Moment? I do not recall it.

also you might have to remove the devices from your device manager and let them reinstall the drivers...

You mean the device manager on my Moment? What if I "remove" them only to discover Odin still won't recognize my fone? Might that not be, shall we say, a bit fatal:thinking:
computer on both.. you have a non rooted moment prob.. you cant remove anything on your phone that would hurt it (yet)

Iowa posted that he removed Nascar, Moxier, Weather app, etc.... how is this done? Do I have to root?
If you flashed with zef's kernel.. yes you have root access.. all that info is on samsungmomentforum.com in great great detail.. a lot of new people have been making better guides and explaining things better then i can.. Just read my thoughts behind the battery meter is enough to make even my head hurt..
