With all the new rooters out there (welcome), I would just like to make a little reminder because the importance of this step seems to get overlooked at times...

Make Nand Backups!

To do so, I recommend going here and reading section 3 very carefully (thanks matlock).

Before you flash anything it is good practice to make a backup. Before you flash a new ROM; make a nand backup. Before you flash any kind of theme or mod; make a nand backup. Even if you just rooted so you can remove bloatware and possibly tether; make a nand backup! They are quite easy to make and can help be a safety net if anything goes wrong. If needed, you will be very grateful you have one.

Anyway, I just wanted to throw this out there in case anybody has rooted and has not made one. Happy Evoing.

I can add that there have been very, very, very few situations where I have heard of people having problems that are unfixable. It is not impossible, but very unlikely that you will truly "brick" your phone.

Ive flashed things that i have flashed before, same file and everything, and for some reason it caused a boot loop and screwed something up, and needed a nand backup. So by all means, DO NOt ever skip it

And on a totally unrelated note......

DON'T FREAK OUT over all of these panic threads. It seems every thread on the front page of this forum is people freaking out because something is going wrong with their phone. You will also notice that somewhere in those thread, the OP ends up solving the problem himself....usually because he overlooked something simple. Just realize that rooting does take some time and a little effort. Also realize there are people here to help when you hit a dead end. Anyway, DON'T FREAK OUT!!!!....

NANDROID backups should be done from Manual Recovery (Either from ClockworkMod or Amon_RA). Not ROM Manager.
ROM Manager has been known to skip steps in it's own process.
So Boot into Recovery and perform all the process' manually.

Why do I need a NAND backup? I always keep a copy of my current ROM, and the last stable one I've used on my sd card. I also use Titanium for all my apps and setting. If I understand correctly NAND backs up the ROM, but it I have the file I can just do a clean install, right? If this is not correct, please correct me. If it is, then what benefits are there doing the NAND restore over doing a reinstall?

It's basically taking a snapshot of your phone. So when you restore your NAND backup there isn't a need to reinstall any apps or data. The phone will be restored to when you did the backup.

Not to mention a nand backup will back up your RSA keys. I know they aren't in the ROMs and I don't believe something like Titanium backs them up either.

I agree with you Matlock. To take it a step further ROM Manager is *okay* at first, especially if you're new to rooting and flashing. But all new rooters should get comfortable with navigating through recovery and doing things manually. Not only are you going to run into less problems with backups etc., you should get familiar with doing things manually anyway so you won't need to rely on something like ROM Manager.
