After reading so much lately because I have downtime at work, it seems like the DROID will replace a home computer lol.
Before you know it, it will have the capabilities of video out, and along with a bluetooth full-size keyboard and mouse, you could have a computer and cellphone in one. Crazy? I think it may happen. Then before you know it we can download torrents, irc, and everything else on it.

I will say that I use my laptop significantly less in casual settings thanks to this phone. I've even done some word processing when the mood strikes and I'm without any other means. But I don't see this thing replacing my home desktop anytime soon. Simply not enough power.

Tubes are far superior to solid state, shows how tech of all forms through time finds a niche. And yes, devices like these represent a huge leap forward.

In a sense, yes. What you alluded to in an earlier post about the mobile phone computer combination is likely the future, but I'm confident that their form will be tremendously different. It is and interesting speculation.

I understand the enthusiasm here, but have calculators been replaced? Are teachers in schools now handing out mobile phones with a calculator app? Am I going to be installing Windows Server 2008 on a Droid Version 2020 in the future, or will Windows no longer exist? Will Exchange 2020 Mobile be released? Of course, technology changes on a daily basis, and what we thought could not happen years ago has come to fruition, but I think we're reaching if we think that mobile phones will replace computer systems in the near future. That was the ONLY point I was making. Yes, a mobile phone can replace your computer if all you do on your computer is browse the Internet, listen to music, watch movies..etc..

What we call a computer or laptop will be obsolete by 2020 easy. Hell, the new laptop I ordered custom on Dec 19th is already obsolete and outdated, and I have not even received it yet.

3 years ago would you have thought you could have 32gb of storage on a card/chip no bigger than your fingernail?

Full operating touch screen computers that roll up into a ball point pen sized cylinder with 8 hours of battery life and a 15 minute recharge coming soon?

Some of these SiFi tech movie items are quite possible.

I'll believe it when I can play Crysis on Very High graphics setting on a 1920x1080 monitor, using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, with all running off my phone.

On a side note (sorta), have you checked out that LG Phone with Projector attachment? I believe it's called eXpo Pico. In the commercial, the dude attaches this projector to the underside of his LG phone and proceeds to project the Avatar trailor onto the wall in the kitchen at work. They should make such an attachment for the Droid!

Tablet or Slates will be the next generation of laptop/phone combos...will the stuff in 2010 be the end state - no way - but I think it will be very cool stuff and well on its way to transforming what people do with laptops/phones as a next step.

Remember - the first RIM devices were also email only.

I goal and rason to have a smart phone is to replace my computer. I work in IT for a large company and I don't have any control over the internet firewalls and filtering and company policy forbids using personal e-mail accounmt, calendars, etc. So my personal calendar is extermaly important because I don't want to schedule work on one of my servers the weekend of a family reunion or somehting. I suppose I could put all my personal things on my work calendar but then that means I have to have my work computer on all the time at home and connect to the vpn every 24 hours, and then Windows XP with Office 2007 and only 2G of ram runs so slow its annoying. So basically I have to keep my own personal calendar on my own laptop which meant my own laptop went to work with me every day so I could refer to it as needed. So a couple years ago I switched to a smart phone running windows mobile. That didn't go very well as windows mobile you can't sync very much data without running into performance issues. You can't copy over full size pictures without taking a couple seconds for the picture viewer to render them, you can't count on MS Activesync to work every day without ocasionally deciding your phone it a new device so it needs a new relationship setup deleting everything that you had. You also can't ms outlook without the random .pst issues occuring from time to time. So windows mobile couldn't replace my laptop so I had to carry it with me to work and have an expensive phone that was nearly useless.
So I replaced the laptop with a $300 netbook, got rid of windows for linux and was able to use my calendar and have all my pictures, books, music, documents, etc fine except for battery life, couldn't leave it running all day long as an mp3 player without carrying a power cord and I'm still carrying two systems back and forth to work.
I now bought an android phone and so far other than the limited storage so I can't carry all my pictures and a couple small missing features I can get by without my netbook. Since I have the data plan I'm looking for a photo/document hosting so I can copy my data online and just access things that way. Google will almost work execept for the moile picasa site being limited to a small number of albums and google docs not converting all my spreadsheets completely, I carry the netbook still but can;t remember the last time I needed to use it at work so it soon will stay home.

With the rooting on the DROID, I'm sure there will be so many different things to come. We are getting multi-touch browser already. before we know it, we'll have bluetooth for any device to pair with it (Can we say Wii or PS3)? The Samsung FlipShot had video out on that phone, and that's like 2 years old now. The one before that also had video out and that one is 4 years old. So I'm sure there will be something with the root to permit video out soon. I was actually just talking to one of my friends and since Android is going to appliances now even, then it's powerful enough to be expanded to desktops and laptops before we know it.

If you root it, can you get to the linux kernel? IIRC android is a javavm on top of a linux kernel, can you run basic linux apps outside the javavm?
