New Droid X user here. New to Android as well. I see I have a universal inbox in the included Messenging app. This seems to show all of my IMAP e-mail accounts as well as Facebook, etc. However, Gmail seems to require its own app. Not sure I see the point of having a universal inbox if I can't include my Gmail account? Am I missing something?

No, you're not. It's how Motorola and Google have decided to handle gmail. It's the same way with the mail client on HTC phones.

Just go into the gmail/google configuration and disable syncing of email. Then open the messaging app (universal inbox) and configure your gmail account there. Problem solved and you can also set more settings than the gmail app allows. Just make sure you have imap enabled on the www.gmail.com site.

You can then setup widgets for each email account if you want to or simply use the universal inbox.

New to Android and to Forums. I hope I'm doing this right.
I have gone into the Messaging app, but I don't see how to configure my Gmail account there, so I can have those emails come into the universal inbox. Can you give details?
Thanks!

Enable imap in gmail at http://www.gmail.com

Then configure your email client/ubox to use the gmail imap settings.

I am trying to follow the instructions in this thread to get my gmail to appear in my universal in-box, but I am having trouble with the first part.

Just go into the gmail/google configuration and disable syncing of email.

Could someone please assist with some elaboration on how to "go into the gmail/google configuration"?

When I go to the settings -> accoutns menu on my Droid X, there are no options to disable syncing. The only option is to add an account (my gmail account is already added here) or remove one. I tried removing the gmail account, but the X told me that the account was required and could not be removed.

I also opened the Gmail app itself and tried to find an option to disable dyncing, but could not find anything there either.

Thanky ou for any assistance!

IMAP enabled, checked for email synch disable but it is not available for me either, nor can I remove the original attached google account. Seems to be stuck having to continuously switch between gmail and other email accounts....

Coming from a blackberry with universal inbox for -years- this is actually kind of a deal breaker for me.They finally give us a blackberry-type keyboard but restrict the complete compilation of all email/sms? Switching between mailboxes is a serious pain in the ass. This must be some sort of infringement on a blackberry patent because google is definitely smarter than this.

Install K9 from the Market and you can get PUSH Gmail and all your other email in ONE universal inbox.

I resisted going to K9 for a while, but must admit, I really love it. Best thing about it, other than the universal inbox, is that it automatically DE-threads gmail on the phone, but keeps it threaded on the web. I like threaded emails on the web...but on the phone, DE-threaded emails are easier to read and manage. YMMV

Ive switched to the universal inbox on my desire 2.2 as the gmail app is PONY. Emails kept getting stuck in the outbox....very annoying.

Yes! Me, too! My boss almost sent me out of town when I was supposed to have my son because I got cocky and didn't verify that the native mail program had sent my reminder to him about it.

I assume PONY means something like "ugly, unintuitive, awful". Amen, even with the likelihood of mail not being sent, the native mail app is a billion quadrillion floppity-gillion times better than the Gmail thing.

Anyone ever find a solution? Verizon had me totally reset all my email settings and it worked for a while.

I miss Sense.

ok.. I'm seeing a lot of questions on this here and elsewhere, and I think something's getting lost in the translation. Sorry if I'm posting instructs that are already here, but I wanted to clarify....

To add your primary gmail account (the one the phone is based on and that you can't remove without losing all of your personal data) to the universal inbox:
Go into messaging -> manage accounts -> open the google gmail account and DISABLE sync Gmail (and maybe the others too, I disabled them all).
Now, escape from there and add another account:
Select the Email icon (not the Google icon) and add your primary gmail account information there.
This should work when you hit Next.
Now that you have an Email account to your gmail account, add it to the Universal Inbox.
(optional) Go back to your original gmail account and reenable all the syncing options. I checked and this all worked for me.

I just rooted 4 days ago, chose Apex 1.4.1 as well. When I wasn't rooted I had the Universal Inbox and I loved it. I don't see it now that I rooted. Does it come with Apex, is it an app I need to download, or will I have to go another avenue. Also if I get an email, through yahoo or gmail, in my notification bar, it shows up but when I click on it it doesn't take me to the email it just goes away and does nothing. It opens up correctly when I have a text messages.

Can I fix these problems?
