Larger battery?

Tired of having to recharge in the middle of the day, I bought a 2600 mAh battery that keeps the phone well charged with heavy use for about a day and a half, with most essential features turned on. The problem is that between the larger battery and new back cover required for this battery, the phone is really a brick now, not that it was ever the slimmest phone.

Can anyone that has bought one, tell me what the largest battery that fits behind the stock cover is, and what kind of battery life you get?

If I could get through the day (12 hour work day), and still have enough juice for my evening walk (using tunes and GPS for buddy runner) which is usually about an hour, this would be a good trade off for the smaller size.

The extra capacity battey I was able to find was a 2200 mAh and I have found that the extra thickness of just another battery is not all that bad .. for the added assurance of have enough power to last through most any day ... even with fairly heavy use.... I have had mine running today for 9 hours so far today and still am at 72% ....

I am thinking of taking a couple of spare 1000 mAh batteries and making them into a dual pack as well ...
maybe even just cutting away the area of a standard phone back to allow the pigg-back battery to stick through ... that way it could still fit the Charger-Cradle unit ...

Ive been thinking of buying another battery as well, preferably a larger mAh one. I wish to see it in person because i think my phone is too fat as it is.

Lay a battery on the back of a standard cover and you get the idea ...
It really isnt all that bad ...

BTW: the phone now nicely sits on it side ... making viewing of videos easier without finding something to prop the phone up against ..

I'm glad you can deal with the thicker phone, but after 3 weeks of lugging this thing around, I am leaning towards buying the largest capacity battery that will fit inside the standard cover. What I'm looking for is some feedback from people from people with a regular thickness battery.

I have not been able to find a battery rated at more than 1200 mAh that would fit the phone with the stock cover ..... do you have a source for higher capacity ?? (that fits like the stock issue ) ??

Thats what I am asking for feedback about. I thought I saw a 1600 mAh a while ago that supposedly fit, but I can't find it now and am hesitant to buy another battery without first hearing how it stacks up usage wise.

I purchased the 1600mah battery for my G1 this week. While I've only charged it 2 times (it takes 5-6 charges to reach its full capacity) I believe it is worth the money.

My standard battery would last about 14 hours (8am to 10pm) before a needed charge. This new one still has about 15 to 20% of life left at that time (and it isn't fully up to speed yet).

Note that I have the toggle app and only turn on wifi and gps when I need it and I also don't use bluetooth.

It appears that this battery can take normal use and get me through a whole day and a night out on a single charge which is about 200% better than my original Samsung Blackjack which had even worse battery issues.

I had ordered an advertise as 1600 mAh battery from Taiwan/Hong Kong and when I got it it turned out to only be 1000 ... so maybe someone can give us a good source for a true 16 mAh battery ? ...

The largest I can find, other than the rather dubious one being sold by Fommy, is a 1400 from Seidio, where I got my 2600 mAh from. At $45 plus shipping, theres no way I'm going with that one which is only 250 mAh over the stock phone.

Most comments on the Fommy site say they are on constant backorder. The one glowing review looks like a definite fake to counter all the other bad reviews.

Since I originally posted this, I have been looking every few days for a larger battery to fit inside the stock cover. Thursday, I found a 1600 mAh listed on Wireless4cheap.com. I didn't realize at the time that this was a US version of Fommy Inc. Friday I saw on their site that it shipped (the promised shipping notice and tracking number never were sent), and today I received it.

It is actually labeled on the battery itself to be 1700 mAh, though I highly doubt that somehow they managed to get 50% more juice in the same size battery. I am going to fully cycle the battery 3-4 times in the next few days and then I will give you guys an idea what kind of charge this thing can hold.

For me, I have a double thickness battery that is a 2200 mAh and I get from 20 to 24 hours of use depending on use of course ... and even with almost constant use ... never less than 12 hours ....

The added thickness is not an issue for me ...

Quite a few of us (me included) have gotten a little better battery life since the update. Just thought I would throw it out there.

I have only been able to cycle the battery twice, but so far I am underwhelmed. I strongly suspect that these batteries are standard batteries that have been labeled as having a higher mAh rating than they actually have. Maybe slightly higher than stock, but a 1600 should have 50% more power and make a noticeable difference. This doesn't seem to have the oomph I would expect. I should be able to cycle the battery 3-4 more times this weekend and I will post my final thoughts on it Monday.

I am still really amazed that they would put out a phone that is this poor as far as battery life goes. It had to have come up in testing, seeing how Tmo included instructions for turning off sync (which the phone is pretty much useless without). Maybe that is the trade off for having a device this powerful, but battery life is absolutely the number 1 issue with this thing right now, followed very closely by the Memory available for installed apps. (this remind anyone else of the 640k limits of early dos?)

I have alway got nokia's but when i would stress them out by using apps like TOM TOM or browse by wifi or G3 the batts also ran out in hours while with normal use they would last for like a week.

Isnt the main problem of the G1 thats its always in contact with internet and android being to demanding for the system in idle?

Is there a option that completly shuts of internet since i personlly would just like to turn it on when i need it.

I am not being a smart ass .... but i think the only way to remove the phone from the network is to shut it off. ... it is a battery hog ... so you need a bloated battery ... if you want to use all the great features of the phone ..

You have several radios running if you are using Wifi, GPS, and bluetooth, cell connection for phone, and one of the following for data:
GPRS / EDGE-2G / 3G

You have the ability to have numberous apps running in the background that could have multiple push mails, multiple IMs, navigation, music and games all multiprocessing at the same time ....

All that takes Battery .... Getting Calls, IMs, emails, all take 24/7... you can turn off most of the radios when not running apps that require them ...

Thats a lots of power doing lots of great things ... no other phone can do them all .... small price to pay for so much battery sucking hardware/software

My battery lasts from about 6am to about 8pm at night, I have WiFi off, twidroid checking for messages every hour, and don't have contacts or calendar syncing automatically. I have the screen brightness set to 3 or 4 (using locale) for most of the day. The timeout for the screen lock is usually 30-seconds, but sometimes I set it to 1-minute. I only get about 1 call a day, maybe two, and send probably 5-10 texts a day. Don't realy surf most of the day since I sit in front of a computer for most of my day.

You can turn off the one that keeps you connect to the network for calls. except by turning the phone off ...

Dont think there are any "TRUE" 1600's and definately no 2K+ that will fit the standard case ...

I think punkzanyj is on the right track. I think the big, beautiful display is the biggest battery drain in the device for most people. I do notice the battery really drains if I am in a cellular hole and the G1 devotes more energy to communicate with a distant tower -- otherwise for me, it's the display. This really limits my ability to use the device for games and reading documents if I'm away from a recharge source.

TMO/HTC, bring on the free, stronger battery! Despite the RC33 update, we need it!!!
