GTalkService starting all by itself

So sometimes I'll go into my contacts and notice that some of them have the green ball lit up telling me that they are online in gtalk. Now I am not signed onto gtalk... but yet somehow I see that in my running services that GTalkService is running.

I can only assume that its eating away battery trying to see how is online and not. I certainly don't need this info unless I wish to go online myself... in which case I would actually go into the gtalk app.

ANyways, obviously i've been killing it in the running services, but it just comes back all on its own. ANy idea why or how to stop it?

wouldn't gtalk always be signed in since we are always loged onto gmail? I never use Gtalk so I would want to disable it as well, as it seems its always running for me as well.

This is very common and it's a feature that Android has. Unfortunately, like many other programs, you cannot stop it from starting and running. You can't uninstall it either. It's just integrated in the regular functions of the phone so it's something you'll have to deal with. Sorry.

Start (GTalk) or (TALK) as it lists in your Apps. Push the " Menu key" and then choose " More " and then finally " Settings ". Uncheck the box for Automatically Log In. That should keep it from signing in and solve your issue. This is what I did when I saw it running and its not something that I use. Hope this helps.

Well it still launches on power up.

Any help on this? I disabled Auto Sign in and then manually signed out, and its still in running services and it still shows status and people without any kind of loading when I open Talk. If I was really signed out, it shouldn't open as quick as hitting the back button on a browser.

One thing you could try is to buy and install Advanced Task Killer Pro (Advanced Task Killer Pro - Android app on AppBrain). It is $4.99 and totally worth it, in my opinion. This has the option to set an auto kill and then you just long press on each task that you want ATK to ignore. I have mine set to auto kill apps every hour and have ignored the apps that need to be running all the time (such as: mail, gmail, sms, weather channel, facebook, google voice, visual voice mail, maps, and a few system processes).

One hint if you do decide to get ATK Pro, go into settings and set Auto Kill Level to "aggressive" and set Security Level to 'low". Auto Kill Level "Aggressive" kills all apps that are running and some, but not all, system processes that are running, but don't really need to be. Security Level "Low" shows those system processes in the kill screen so that you can choose which one you want to ignore.

Now, I'm sure your going to get a whole butt load of people who are going to start arguing about Task Killers in this thread. Many will tell you "Task killers are not needed and your stupid for installing and using them", while others are going to tell you "task killers are needed and you are stupid for not using them". Overall, it is simply your choice at to whether you decided to use a task killer or not.

I have read all of the threads about Task Killers and have decided that yea, there may not be a major need for them, but I personally see a major difference in performance when I use AKT Pro. It's all up to you. Use it or don't, but this is just my personal suggestion.

I've done this a number of times, it still automatically signs me in when I launch the app, and stopped GTalkService in the Running Services menu and it still starts itself without even powering the phone off and back on again, so I guess other phone operations must use it.

GTalk services is used by other apps I think. On my phone when I uncheck that box and sign out, it wont sign me in until I launch the app though. You will notice your getting signed in when you launch the app and it says "signing in" which means it wasn't signed in before...

I have the same problem and if I have to deal with that I want to know if this gtalk service is using my internet connection all the time because my data traffic seems too high because I'm only browsing simple pages like m.facebook etc, and I think this gtalk could be a source of my problem?

I never had green balls pop up for contacts until I installed Google Talk android app a few weeks ago. I assume that if I uninstalled Talk it will stop doing it. Try uninstalling Google Talk. You may need to root if it doesn't let you uninstall.

You used to be able to sign out of, and stay signed off of, Talk. I may be very wrong but now think it will be an 'always on' thing because of the web Market. The help pages do indicate you need to be signed into Talk...?

Talk never starts for me unless I specifically do so myself. Even with the auto sign in box checked.

I don't know names (I've never used them) but if you do some digging around, there are LOTS of apps that will track your data usage and list what apps/services are sending and receiving data, that should help you.

Also, to those who haven't figured it out, you can always root and then freeze the gtalk services if you can't make it stop running (but mine doesn't run automatically). Also also... don't use advanced task killer to kill things like this, OR AT ALL. Having ATK kill an app that self starts will kill your battery 2x as fast as just leaving it running.

Does she DL a lot of apps? Also, you may want to look into disabling auto-sync. Android will automatically sync with your account in the cloud if that is enabled. This will cause you to use more data than normal.

Also, look through the apps that are installed and make sure they are not set to auto sync. Facebook is one that will autosync if you are signed in. This means that you should probably sign out of FB if you don't even use it.

Other than that, just try to find one of those apps mentioned above. I haven't seen or used them, but know that they exist.

Well it still launches on power up.

It has to launch so your phone can run. It's what Google uses as the phones authenticator for market. Doesn't necessarily mean your signed in, however.

Hi guys, Gtalkservice isn't running to sign you in or out of Gtalk, actually it's designed to maintain a persistent connection between your Android phone and Google servers so that you can remotely install apps from Android Market. And more important, Google can use it to remotely remove any apps you installed from their market, and this happened once.

That's why Gtalkservice keeps restarting and running, it needs to connect to the server and that's why it's there. At the moment there's nothing can be done about it. Even if you root your phone, you can not remove it.

So do not try to kill it using some task killer, it may eat up your battery quicker. Besides, you could not install apps from Android Market directly anymore.
