Root n00b questions on flashing / root / ruu / img

Hi just got my 1st android device (HTC Hero) I got it in Taiwan so it has EN & CN. I tried installing compact QWERTY the install went well but I still cannot use compact QWERTY so I wanted to flash with a WWE ROM

I have rooted the device, did a backup, and can enter recovery mode.
I have also done MoDaCo unlocked SPL here
I also downloaded some untouched ROMs here but when I run the EXE I get a USB connection error.

Is my device now hard SPL (ala in WM where I can flash any ROM)? What step am I missing?

Thanks for any help and guidance. Happy new year! and...

DROID!

You have flashed a custom recovery image to the handset, yes?

Just as well... you don't want those. Instead d/l the HTC Generic 2.73.405.38 ROM that Paul @MoDaCo repackaged as an update.zip. Copy it to your SD card, reboot into the recovery image, and select the relevant menu item to apply the update.

The problem with using an RUU update is that it will unroot your handset and, in the case of the latest updates, make re-rooting much more difficult. That's why I advised using the repackaged 2.73.405.38 - it is identical to the stock ROM except that it doesn't use the RUU method so you won't lose root or your custom recovery image

understood. if I want to flash radio it can also be done via cyanogen flash recovery? it should be run zip from sdcard as well right?
