Root unbranded 2.2 with hboot 0.93-how to root?

Hello Guys,

I am having my Desire unbranded (From Singapore) running on Froyo and HBOOT 0.93.00001 (It originally had 2.1 but, got the OTA upgrade).

When I got the phone 2 months back, everyone said 0.83 can't be rooted etc., etc., and meanwhile FROYO OTA came directly, so I went off line for all this while. Now, when I am thinking of rooting and searching, I find that people now say 0.93 can't be rooted.

The only practical approach heard is about downgrading to .80 after which we can use unrevoked and install any ROM we want.

So, I thought of going through our dear Legitimate XDA heroes and found multiple threads saying things differently..

This one says we can:
[HOW-TO] downgrade HBOOT 0.93 to 0.80 again - xda-developers
[HOWTO] Downgrade Froyo (2.2) to Stock 2.1 (ANY HBOOT | WIN/LINUX/MAC | ROOT) - xda-developers

But, I read somewhere that 'Anyone using 0.93/0.83 should not downgrade' (Bloody me, I lost the link!!!!!)

Nevertheless, my two questions are..
- Anyone followed above methods are happy now?
- In case I want to unroot, can I come back to 2.2 Froyo again..

Thank you all in advance!

Not PM'd anyone, they must get bombarded with idiots like me every day - just thought I'd have to wait for an update. I ran unrevoked when I first had the phone, and after 3 attempts and messages saying it had failed,(is the firmware too new) I eventually got a triumph message. I flashed the phone with a custom Rom.

Then I tried to install adfree but it never worked. I read on the forums that there was an updated hosts file, which I downloaded (the one on the phone showed file date of 2008) Tried to copy to the system/etc folder with root explorer (after changing r/o to r/w) and it failed saying not enough space - it was showing 170mb free!

So I thought maybe something was wrong and there was either a sharing violation or I wasn't properly rooted, so just to be sure I tried running unrevoked again. Now it fails every time - ran it 5 or 6 times yesterday.

Running Oxygen Rom.
Android 2.2.1
32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
2.6.35.9

Dunno if this helps.
Not a major problem to me, I have the phone set up as I like and it runs really well. Would be nice to root it properly though and to be able to update this hosts file.

Very new to this - I only upgraded from the iphone last week :D

If you're runnign oxygen you are rooted as its a custom rom. You havent got access to system folders when android is running. You either need to be in recovery running ADB (command line from PC, or have S-Off.

I will dig you some info out later.

Edit> Adfree has an option to symlink from /data/data/hosts. Try selecting that option.

OK, thanks for that - I thought I'd somehow managed to unroot the phone by running it again. Root explorer and superuser permissions both throw up an error now, which they didn't before. (process com.noshufou.android.su) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

Guess that's another problem then, but not an issue for me at the moment.

Off to check the adfee option.

Thank you for your help.

followed this link......about 1800 times..lol .an its not playin ball. ive checked on start-up my bootloader and its the 0.93 and i got 2.2....so as directed ive changed the drivers with the ones given in this link....when the phone is plugged into the computer but not switched on and just in the bootloader menu, my device manager on the computer shows exactly what it should that the android bootloader is good which it shows in all the vidoes....as soon as i switch the phone on in my device manager, im getting that the drives wernt installed properly due to missing software???? so when i bring up unrevoked which i have installed it says waiting for phone and check that the usb debuggin is ticked which it is but then i dont get the white pop up menu where u select ok for the rooting to start. any suggestions??

those are the same ones i have and when i try to do it again i get a message coming up sayin cannot find better drives than ones currently installed...

Sounds like you're allowing windows to automatically search for drivers. You should be browsing for the drivers.

Follow the guide I link to in the rooting FAQ. There is another link from that guide linking to a section about drivers.
