Is the cable that comes with the Droid just a standard micro USB cable or is the phone end of it a Motorola specific type of connector? I was going to order a third party car charger and extra data cable and want to make sure I get the right ones.

anything to save them money i guess, probably the same reason why they never included a real instruction booklet in the box

That is strange because I ordered the free manual from their web site. I got it a week and they had to pay shipping. Verizon store did not have a copy of it either. I mistakenly order two and gave one to the store. They acted like it was a huge present.

Here's one.. Anyone know where to find a USB charger that puts out 0.8 Amps like the Droid's charger(maybe even more than 0.8A)? I ask because mine blew out yesterday..and the techs at the local Verizon outlet couldn't get me a replacement..luckily they had an extra they were nice enough to give me(along with my fried one back). They told me to call Motorola themselves for a replacement.

Any of the one-piece chargers they had, and I have found elsewhere(including USB chargers) output less current, and therefore will take longer to charge the battery:(

Monoprice FTW - Bought a 10' cable and a Car Cigarette Lighter adapter, including shipping was under $5.

I now use the short cable in my car with the adapter and the long one at home with the Electrical outlet adapter / computer.

Thinking of buying a couple more short ones so I can carry one with my laptop and leave one connected to my computer 24/7 and not have to worry about disconnecting cables and moving them....

Oh nice, monprice has really good prices. I just baught two 6ft cables on amazon, but Im pretty sure the monoprice price is better.

Edit: i got two 6 foot cables on amazon for $6.76 with shipping, on monoprice it was two 6 foot cables for $5.09. Thats a really low price, and it says the monprice ones are gold plated, which sounds fancy. my amazon ones aren't gold plated :(

Monoprice.com has a couple of 1000ma chargers for $2.16 (in white or black) HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more! They also have cigarette lighter usb chargers that put out 1000ma for $1.16, you could probably get a couple of cables, wall warts, and cigarette lighter adapters for less than 10 bucks shipped.

The monoprice reviews say to avoid using the wall USBs with the droid. Does anyone know of a wall usb that will work with the droid? One that won't make the screen go crazy.

I use the wall usb chargers from Monoprice with no problems. I bought both the 6 ft ferrite core micro usb cable and wall usb charger from monoprice, and it works great. Just make sure you buy the 1000mA charger, and not the 500mA one.

I too was a little confused by this at first because I didn't know there were too standards for the small USB cable (mini vs. micro). In this link you can see the differences in sizes up close.

Picture: Mini vs Micro USB

Kind of a bummer, I was hoping my camera cables would work interchangeably with this phone. Oh well, hopefully micro over takes mini and these cables become more common. I loved that I could charge my old blackberry with so many different cables.

That only applies to the 500 milliamp chargers, the 1000 mA (milliAmp) chargers work great. Check the specs, make sure that the output power is 800 mA or above for the droid, this limits your choice to the 1000 mA charger in black or white, make sure you pair it with a Usb A to micro USB cable like this one

500 mA is not enough to power the droid, causing the wonky screen behavior, let alone charge it at the same time.
