all of this talk about best buy and the 24th, has anyone heard if verizon will be selling it in their stores on the 24th as well?

not a huge fan of the best buy pre-order policies and the best buy near me don't seem to focus on training or services very much where as the verizon store closest to me rocks, lots of good employees work there.
the other best buy near me is a pain to drive to but that store's employees are really good just don't want to drive it.

What do you not like about the bestbuy pre-order policies? I'm curious, because i know nothing about this.

Thanks.

I would definitely prefer to buy it a Verizon too, but my thing is that you can't get insurance on it unless you keep the data plan going. That alone, has ruled out Verizon for me.

They should really allow you to pre-pay warranty and/or insurance charges, or be able to bill them separately. At least for data-only products.

The other benefit is that the BB warranty is transferable, so that's good.

Even though this is off topic for this thread I wanted to post about this anyway.

SquareTrade offers a 3 year warrantee for $129 if you wanted to go that route and skip the best buy option.

Just to follow up with the data plan. I spoke to a VZ rep about this required data thing. I was told you can negotiate these fees. So I plan to say if you want me spend 800+ dollars I'm not paying activation fee or data fee, put it on my plan and cancel it right after, and waive the fees. I was told it's as simple them checking two boxes to waive fees on a purchase.

Do you mean for a best buy employee or a Verizon one? Best buy employees have no control over the fees on your bill unless there is a promotion going. Even then its not like we have control, its an automatic thing verizon does.

Actually Best Buy has re done the way they do preorders now, it's actually all done through our computer system and is a lot better and efficient then the way we used to do it.

I too was frustrated last year when we did all the preorders for things like the Droid X, the Evo and the iPhone. Lets just say preorders this time around are going to be 10 times better :)

I called verizon customer service. So this was in reference to a purchase at VZ store not BB. I'm still not 100% sure where I will buy mine yet. Or if I will wait till sammys Tab 10.1, and see if xoom drops, or if I like sammys tablet ergonomics more.

aookay mentioned they have changed it, and it has been more than 8 months since i last tried at best buy. but i have pre-ordered games and devices there before, showed up the morning it was released only to be told they didn't have any, or if they did it was not the version i had pre-ordered. and i have also had to argue with them when they did have it and i went to check out they kept trying to get me to pay full price even though with the pre-order i had already paid part of the price (and had reciept to prove it). it just seemed like everytime i delt with them it was something and truth be known it made the whole experience a pain in the butt.

now if they have re-vamped the system that can only be a good thing but even if a company fixes a problem, the scares from previous burns don't fade away easily.

I don't expect one, just opening on the 17th and doing preorders and opening on the 24th and selling it :)

i know we are picking on you a little (thank you for all the info), but i was wondering if you had seen any prices for some of the accessories (specifically the folio and docks)?

to keep it on topic i am assuming those accessories will also be available on the 24th or do you think best buy might start selling those a few days earlier? i have seen with some phones where best buy was selling cases and other things for the phone a few days before it was actually on sale.

Ah I don't mind one bit, I love these threads :)

We will be carrying the folio and the standard dock, I haven seen the prices yet though. If I run across them I will post them here.

accessories usualy have the same street date as the hardware, so I don't see us selling them until the day of, unless ome new guy puts them out by accident :\

I have a couple of quick questions about the best buy presale on the 17th:

I probably will not be able to get to a best buy until ~8:30 pm on the 17th. Is it worthwhile to still go, or do they only have a limited number of presales available?

Also, what are people's thoughts about how necessary it is to preorder the Xoom? Given the high price, I would be a bit surprised if they sold out on the first day. Then again, who knows how many they're getting in stock.

On a different note, with the preorder supposed to be happening in less than two days, when do people think we will hear an announcement from Motorola? How has this worked for presales in the past? Are there any big events occurring today or tomorrow where the announcement will likely be made?

Thanks!

i got lucky when i got my incredible, i didn't think i needed to pre-order because really "it was just a smartphone", however i did get to the stores right when they opened, in the end i had to travel to 3 different stores to get one that morning and it was almost 3 months before they started showing up in the stores again in any quantity. i know alot of people got incredibles subsidized by contracts (i bought mine full price) but that tought me that pent up demand will drive lots of people to pick something up despite the price.

i am a little concerned truth be known about wether to pre-order or not. if each store gets 200 of these things people will be pre-ordering them all week before launch and they could sell out.

I would say I'm not surpriised they haven't announced it yet, usuallly we get our release dat and preorder date before they announce it. There won't be a limit for preorders unless its an overwhelming demand like it was for the iphone. We know how many at the very least we will receive, so I can see the stores accepting preorders for a little more then that in case we receive more.

I would say to definitly preorder it if you are interested, because what I've seen as how much each store will receive, its not going to be a lot. Especially because we have the financing deals right now and people will drop it on the card like nothing.I know I will :)

I would honestly be amazed if they (Verizon, Moto, or both) didn't make the official announcement tomorrow or sometime in the middle of the night between Weds/Thurs (Barcelona is 6 hours ahead of New York).

I personally think they were waiting for everyone else to make their announcements at Mobile World Congress. If I don't see an official announcement by Thursday afternoon (EST), I am guessing it's not coming out next week.

Thanks for all of your insider info Aookay.

Is the pre order down payment refundable if you change your mind and decide not to buy the xoom?

Its a gift card so yes,as long as you don't use it.

And from I have seen, you won't be able to preorder online and pick it up in store. But we haven't receivied anything official yet about it. So maybe ill have an answer for you on Thursday.
