Hi there.
coming from a long time Winmobile user.
First off. Where does the applications that i install go? main memory or storage card??, with WM devices this can be chosen upon installation.
Secondly is there anyway to force an application to stop? like the task manager on your computer. i

I believe the apps are installed on your phones memory and there are apps called task killer on the market that are what your looking for. enjoy

i think you can change it somehow but not sure how, also i think you can only change it on rooted phones but again im not sure.

Yeah you can only change destination if you root.

Also...don't go crazy with the task killer. It's not necessary! Just let the phone manage apps the way it wants. You only need to use the task killer if a particular app is clearly behaving weirdly with its memory usage.

Can you elaborate on that? I read somewhere that the reason that the battery life is so bad is because you have a few dozen apps that start when you power on the phone. There are some that I'd never use ever -- is there an easy way to get rid of those? Do those apps really use virtually no power if I just let them run instead of periodically using the task killer?

The battery life tends to be hit by applications that are set to update far to often (e.g. email, news feeds etc) as well as wifi and gps rather than the relatively low intensity apps that autostart.

Different people have different experiences I guess. But at least for me, my phone has been running far better without a task killer. I'm almost at 10 days without the need for a power cycle, whereas with the task killer i was restarting the phone every night because applications just started being weird (like not opening up properly/quickly etc)

Also...some people end up killing processes like the clock and then suddenly complain that their alarm didn't wake them up in the morning. It's because they killed the clock!!

But how come the android system wont give you a chance to install your app on the SD card from the beginning?? this is by my means a major flaw. eaven if the apps arent that memoryconsuming it would still be nie to be able to install them on the SD card.

It is a flaw but consider what version of the OS we're currently on... (1.5)

Android is still in its infancy (and yet it's very very good). Things are significantly improved in 2.1 (coming this year to the Hero), and no doubt it will excel in future versions too.

That is true. Upon comparison with any Windows Mobile system this is if not to say extremely good. A real simple and clever system, however i think that every OS has its flaws but the Android system is working very well.

Does anyone know what is holding up the updates because it seems wierd that we have such old firmware.I have been reading RSS feeds that include other new android phones and they are getting alot more out of there phones and thats what I expected from android, not a restricted market place and a need to root a phone to get what you want. I thought android would be atleast as open as symbian,I could get appes sighned or not from any one or any where.

Android is open. This has nothing to do with Google.

It's HTC that has to release it (officially) for the Hero. They decided to skip 1.6 and 2.0 and go straight to 2.1.

HTC has to redesign/rewrite its GUI/customisations to be compatible with 2.1, as well as include new functionality etc

The US Heros are getting 2.1 in the first half of this year, so I would assume European Heros will be in a similar time frame.

Having the Task Killer app, in itself, does no harm. Your phone won't runner "better" without it. But, there really is no need to have a Task Killer unless you are just curious and like to snoop around. I had the Task Killer installed because I suspected there would be things running in the background, that I was unaware of, that was using up system resources. Every time I check - that was NEVER the case. After a while, I became convinced that this was not an issue and saw no reason to continue having the Task Killer app installed. I removed it.

Yes, but you seem to be implying that WITH the Task Killer app installed that it was, somehow, slowing down your phone, or affecting it adversely. I don't see how that could be the case.

If you're simply saying you don't need the Task Killer app - I'd agree. But getting rid of the app isn't going to speed things up any more than getting rid of a game app would.

Well I just didn't spell it out because I think it's pretty obvious that using a task killer is when the problems arise, not when it's just sitting there unopened.

The apps are on the phone's internal memory - not sdcard.


By the way, one of the quickest ways to uninstall an app that you downloaded from Market Place is to simply go back to the Market Place - reselect that same app - and you will notice you are prompted to "uninstall" it. This is a common routine because we often download and install apps that we find out actually suck.

Think you for this information. I had downloaded a third party app and could not figure out how to delete it. Now I know.
