It's been TERRIBLE. So my droid was acting a lil funky, was lagging a bit sometimes the phone app wouldnt work correctly make me miss phone calls! So i figured lemme do a factory reset maybe that will help? Well....it helped with the lag issue....but my droid is no longer the same droid it used to be. The memories we had together....the fun times downloading new apps and widgets....ALL THOSE MEMORIES HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN BY THE DROID. its like this new droid that doesnt even recognize me. So well i thought, hey Google pretty much runs my virtual life, hopefully it will reinstall my apps? WRONG! It wasn't downloading anything just giving me that whirling bar like it was pretending to download.....but I knew better....this new droid was messing with me. so i canceled the download....i figured hey at least my downloaded apps list will be there right? WRONG! 70% of my apps are now gone. Its like this new droid personality is erasing all the fun times I had! I HATE IT! the other issue is I can no longer use my beautiful home widget...because ITS GONE! my hard earned blood sweat and money went into that purchase...all 145 pennies of it! And now I was hoodwinked out of my money and no beautiful home app to feast my eyes on....grrrrrr
then I figured well let me download PDAnet and tell the guys (and gals) at the forum about it. As i started using pdanet, it was lagging BADLY! Worse than 28k! its sooo bad! my old droid was much faster and usuable! Now I cant even write my 3 week overdue paper!!! GRRRRRR I also tried downloading some apps by the old hand method of searching and tapping and downloading took forever!!! on my old droid i could dl 3 apps at a time....now I can only dl ONE! and even that takes forever. its this new droid can barely utilize the 3G connection even tho it shows 3-4 bars.

Factory Resetting screwed up my phone. My old droid, its personality, its love and affection....ALL GONE! Now i have this new cranky "factory" droid that cant do what I want it to do....I HATE IT! this is a foreboding to all those who are considering factory resetting......CONSIDER IT CAREFULLY! you do so at the high risk of losing your droid's friendship and acquiring a potential new enemy!! be very wary friends.....very wary

/rant

Yes i understand what i described above is exactly what a factory reset is supposed to do minus the severing of emotional attachments with a technological device. that being said, this was only a rant but any and all comments are appreciated :D

ps does anyone know if I can retrieve a list of all the apps I downloaded from google somehow? I had tons of awesome apps and I dont remember all of them

Mine all showed up when I opened the Market and hit the menu button and pressed the Downloaded button. I had to redownload them all one by one, but they were all listed for me. Even the free apps. Actually, only the free apps cause I don't buy apps.

Hmm. Sucks, dunno what to tell you except that you're making me hesistant to do a fr heh.

to be honest with you its not that bad. I was imagining a really steamlined process that would magically bring back all my apps and data and i could be like "Look Ma, no hands!" but alas I was dead wrong. think of it this way, factory reset is the same kinda deal if you were to reformat your computer. Just make sure to prepare your backups and have a plan before you jump in. I just jumped into it and now i have to reorganize everything, remember and re download my apps, and customize my screens again. but as long as your planning it out, then you should be okay. fyi the phone runs ALOT better after factory reset.

but I've loaded the 2.1 launcher with a good amt of widgets and I'm arleady getting FCs :-/

You performed a factory reset without having your apps, contacts, messages, and settings not backed up somewhere? Really???

I didnt know how to back up my apps. I read on here that they automatically download so figured I'd give that a shot. When they were taking FOREVER to download I started to do some neccesary ones by hand. but alas, the whole list dissappeared and I was wrong into assume google might've kept a list of my downloads. as for my contacts and messages, i used wave secure to abck those up. I had back up my settings checked in the preferences. the failure to backup apps was really killing me. But its okay now, I just dled most of the same apps I had. to be honest, I didn't use ALL the apps I had but just had them there for just in case situations

Why would you need to? Downloading and reinstalling all the apps from the market makes good sense. That way you don't restore anything that might have been causing a problem before.

The majority of the users on here have everything stored in their gmail account ... so your contacts and e-mail come streaming back down as soon as you put in your username and password.

A hard reset / factory reset takes me about 30 minutes to recover from. And I don't use any backup / restore software at all.

yea that makes a lotta sense. In the end, i guess it was better to jus redownload them by hand. the phone is running better now and I've noticed that pdanet (which I am a heavy user of) seems to be making my phone app act funky when I get a call. I guess that one of the drawbacks of not being able to do calls and data at the same time.

I can give you several GREAT reasons, if you're willing to listen. Sounds to me like you have your mind fairly made up though. ;)

1 - Every week or so, I backup ALL of my apps, and then save that folder onto my PC. I have ZERO chance of losing apps that I like. Can you say this?

2 - I can reinstall each app one at a time if I choose. Or a few, or ALL of them at once.

3 - I can also install whatever version of an app that I want to install. You can only install the newest/latest version from the Market, which may be the source of your issue.

4 - Apps that were once FREE but now cost money, you will have to pay for. Since I have the backed-up free version, the update to the new version won't cost me anything. Score!

5 - Apps (like Beautiful Widgets and Download Crutch) that are no longer available on the Market will not be available to you anymore. But for me ... I got em!

6 - Backing up "YOUR" stuff is smart. Relying on Google to do this for you is not smart ... hence this thread.

I really don't care what you do. It's your stuff, it's your life. You don't sound like you work in the IT field at all. I've never heard ANYONE argue with the philosophy of backing up anything. This post/reply is really for those who are still teachable. I'm not saying you're not ... but your post sure does imply this.

Chances are, you already have ASTRO File Manager. If not, GET IT!!! It has an awesome app backup/restore utility built into it.

I just checked out Astros File backup......I WISH I USED THIS BEFORE I DID MY FACTORY RESET! would've saved me so much hassle. I even had this installed before my factory reset but I had no idea abt its app backups. Thank you Joe Droid. At least Im safe for the future. :D

Joe -
Sorry about that ... I didn't mean to imply an iPhone state of mind. ;)

I like your points #4 and #5 ... I never really thought of that! I haven't ever had an app taken away from the app store yet that I use ... but if I did, I'm sure I would be very sad.

And as for relying on Google to back everything up, I don't do that either. All of my e-mail, calendar, contacts are on my corporate Exchange server. So I'm not worried about losing those. I guess I should have clarified my point a little further, to keep myself from sounding like an a$$.

I guess I was looking at the conversation from the point of a gmail or corporate Exchange user ... For folks like us, gmail or Exchange keeps all of our e-mail, calendar and contacts. And before reading your points #4 and #5, I just figured I would always be able to re-download a previously installed app from the market. From my point of view ... All I would really lose if my Droid went south would be my SMS and MMS messages, which is fine by me.

Sorry for displaying such a close minded view. I'll re-read my response before hitting quick reply next time! :p

It's all good. I have no memory of what or how people say things in these forums. Most often, we are all misconstrued sooner or later. Lord knows, my sense of humor doesn't play very well.

We're all friends here ... right?
