Root [OUTDATED] Root 2.2.1 and get Data WORKING!!!

I would pay for that service if it was possible. I don't want to do this yet as it seems like it's not all ironed out unless you really know what you are doing.

its not that hard just follow the directions. at first it may take you a few hours till you get used to it. Now when i root my friends phones it takes me about 15-20 minutes to do and most of that time is waiting for the loading bar. Anyway if you mess up your phone you can always restore it back to factory with Andyo's method.

If you need any help people are willing to help you, so if you have any questions just ask.:D

I did attempt the beginning, but installing one of the files gave me an error...so I said forget it. Im just not rich enough to afford to replace my phone if I ruin it. Id root my wife's ascend, cuz that looks easy.

Hey sorry for my mistake I forgot an step in the guide. After you extract the andriod sdk, open sdkmanager.exe and download all the files that say platform tools and the ones that say tools. Then you will be able to continue with the guide.

Ok. Here's where I am at. I have
A Stock 2.2.1 M
I used the methods in this thread.
I "Pushed" the Su and Busybox files onto it.
I now have the SU Program, and used the recovery method to recover service.
Great.
Now, I can use SU mode on programs like "Absolute System" and "Root Explorer"
Awesome.
I managed to use Absolute to change out my BootAnim and PowerOn Sound.
Sweet!
However, the Recovery method brought up no menu. I tried the Vol down+Home+Power method, and while it recovered my service, I can't seem to get it to "DO" anything. Was there supposed to be some visual clue to the Recovery mode working? Aside from metro service coming back on? I'd like to be able to install a custom rom but I don't know how to get into the boot recovery mode.
Any ideas? ;-)

Ok, I have rooted my phone and can wifi-hotspot for about a min with barnicle, will experment more.

p.s. I am working on making this easier for all you newbies as I am myself, I have put together a simple zip file containing all the needed files in a organized folder structure. I just have to update instructions and find a web file sharing host.

OpimusSlim, did you say this will not work for a wi-fi hotspot?

I said No such thing. I have a post up in fact to the contrary. Use Wireless Tether from Market to accomplish that. I just can't get the Custom Recovery method to work, which I'm guessing has something to do with the 2.2.1 kernel. I am not a pro at these things, look to the Mods/Admins for real help, all I know is that I followed the instructions (As did a few of us) and can't seem to get the Boot Recovery working. So no custom roms for us. Use Absolute System from Market (Free) to change your boot Animation and PowerOn.Mp3 (If You're brave!) and Fonts. Use Wireless Tether(Also Market) for tethering, and ask the Mod Godz to please keep up the good work and get us rolling again. I used an Optimus Prime (Not a phone, a Transformer!) transformation mp3 for my PowerOn, and the boot Anim from a Motorola Droid. Damn that looks nice. :)

Custom recovery is not working at the moment... it gives a black screen just like when trying to Downgrade to 2.2 from a factory 2.2.1.

i believe it has something to do with the MS690ZV3_36.scr file since it is the same file used in the downgrade method which gives the same black screen.

if anyone has anyideas about MS690ZV3_36.scr being the culprate of the black screen when entering recovery mode or if it is something completely different your ideas will be appreciated.

I can't get the 7z file to download!!!! It doesn't give me a download link! What gives????

click the link it takes you to mediafire to download the .7z.

if you still cant get it to go then it has to be something wrong with your browser. try it under a different browser, i use chrome and it works perfectly.

Here is the link taken directly from Andyo70's post

So I'm confused from what I have read the phone will work but you cant do a custom restore is all?

restoring your phone is not a problem. The problem is when entering into custom recovery mode.. like when you start the phone by holding Home, Volume down, and power. It will boot into a black screen which makes us unable to load custom roms or do a nand backup.

Interesting, so what are the added benefits of loading a custom rom? And what is a nand backup?

Sorry I'm new to the android scene and this is my first android phone :D

Sorry for the triple post, I dont even want to bother anymore I just feel like I blew $200 on a piece of brick now :/

Is there a way to get signal/service back and revert back to factory 2.2.1 settings?
_________________________________________________

Another update *sigh*

With the app "anreboot" instead of choosing reboot system i accordantly chose restore. (was trying to get service one last time) and my phone froze and when it came back it was as if it was brand new, but worse.

No service, settings-applications crashes and the market looks dated and wont download anything with wi-fi.

So now what do I do? I'm hoping someone would reply I would REALLY appreciate this.
