Hey all, after doing a pretty good search, I'm unable to find any directions for replacing the icons on your Droid. Does the phone need to be rooted to do this? Someone have some "simple" instructions for everyone if they would like to replace icons.

Thanks in advance.

BetterCut costs a couple of bucks and lets you replace just about any icon (although I don't think it does folders) individually with whatever icon files you have on your phone. You can use icon packs or normal PNG files, I believe. You may want to wait on buying it though. I've heard that it doesn't currently work with the 2.1 ROMs floating around and we may possibly be getting an OTA 2.1 update soon.

Alternatively, you can download a home replacement that supports themes and use an icon pack to automatically replace certain icons. I recommend the BetterCut method though. Basically how it works is this:

1. Place whatever shortcuts you want on your home screens.
2. Open BetterCut
3. Choose "Edit Shortcut"
4. Pick the shortcut you want, choose "Change Icon"
5. Pick the icon from any icon pack or other location on your phone.
6. Icon on the homescreen changes automatically.

If you're willing to spend the few bucks it's very nice to have.

Yes, BetterCut is how most people do it, but they don't change the icons in your app drawer/launcher, just the shortcuts on the home screen's. If you are rooted and have some time then you can manually change all the icons permanently, easiest way for me is to make a nandroid backup and put it on your pc, then go into each .apk (rename them to .zip cuz that is all they really are) and find the .png for the icon and delete it then put in the one you want. After that you rename it back to .apk and you MIGHT have to sign it, there is a app that will do that for you somewhere around here, just search for how to sign .apk's. When your done put the nandroid backup back to the sdcard and restore from it.

I use Bettercut....and I hate paying for apps but this was worth it. I have changed almost every desktop icon.

well, how can I group similar apps? They are all listed alphabetically

If you are talking about on the home screens, just long press and drag them where you want them. If you are talking about the tray at the bottom of the screen that contains all your apps..... you cannot change these icons or re-order them with Bettercut. Bettercut is great but only works for shortcut icons on your desktop. The icons in the tray will not change. These icons are built into the app and can only be changed on rooted devices by going into the actual program file and inserting a different icon. Same goes for widgets. I don't believe there is any way to re-order the apps in the tray.

That's one of the big problems with the basic design of the Android home screens/launcher. Not only are all of your apps shown on a single huge scrolling panel that can't be customized, but coming to Android from WM, I was surprised to find that there's no distinction between "real" apps (the ones you start via an icon shortcut) and apps that you don't directly invoke (things like themes, some widgets, etc.)

Android clearly maintains a separate list of installed apps that appears when you use ASTRO or any other app manager, so why is it necessary to have 'apps' like themes even added to the app drawer list? Whether or not their app should be added to the list in the app drawer should really be something that developers could specify within their .apk file.

Anyway, here's a couple workarounds:

1- Install GDE, which lets you define as many app folders as you like. When you pull up the app drawer, you can first select which folder you want to see (including the default "all apps"). It also lets you choose whether you want to select from a page full of icons, or from a vertically-scrolling icon/name list (which I usually prefer). Frankly, I think this is more how native Android have been designed. I hate having to use a third-party launcher/shell, especially with 2.1 coming soon, but it sure makes things a lot more manageable.

2- Install either appOrganizer (free) or abcOrganizer (paid). Either makes it super-quick and easy to create folders and assign apps into the folders. These folders are then available as shortcuts which can added to any home screen (They work very nicely when added to the pull-in side panels on Panda Home!). The downside is that this completely bypasses the standard app drawer, which I do like... but at least you end up with the ability to find and start apps much more easily.

I have also tried BetterCut, but was unhappy that it can't change the icons globally -- just for apps displayed on the home screens, and not the app drawer list, app managers, etc. It's nice to learn that this can be done with root access, although it's certainly a painful and tedious process. (Seems like a great opportunity for someone to develop a nice GUI app that automates the replacement of app icons within .apk files for root users!) But again, enabling users to easily change app icons globally without root access is another one of those things that should simply be built into Android as a native capability.

I'm all for innovation, but it is a little disappointing that the Android devs re-invented the wheel for some of these basic features using new designs that just aren't as flexible and/or usable as existing models. One of the big advantages to creating a brand-new mobile OS like Android from a blank sheet of paper is the ability to learn from the past and innovate for the future.

Do the better cut icons work on any home replacement app? I have Home++ and have heard most of the icon replacements only work for certain home replacements.
No issues using Better Cut icons with dxtop home replacement. Note: most icon packs I've seen list compatibility with Better Cut. keep an eye out for that language in the descriptions.

I just tried buying this app but it wouldn't download. It was stuck at authorizing purchase. I tried buying a better keyboard too, and same thing happened.

I got my money back and wonder what happened as I know I got plenty of money in my account and I have web access on 3G and wi-fi. I tried turning off wi-fi and that didn't help. What did i do wrong on this? I had no issues buying GDE or any other purchases in the past. Maybe the app market is down?

If I buy it again and it won't download, what do I do since I can't get a refund. I really want to try this on my Droid but I am hesitant at this point.
