Are you upset that Sprint took our annual upgrade away

It's old by now but with my unlimited data plan and NO 4g in my area, I still got hit for $10 extra for 3 phones (all Evos) of 4 on my family plan. Is it for 4G, extra data on top my "unlimited", or a surplus fee? I just know my bill jumped $30. And I did hate losing the annual upgrade since I am the primary user. What the hell, bitching ain't gonna change anything. It is what it is.

It is not, and has never been, a 4G charge. "Premium Data" is what it's for, meaning smart phones use more and more data every day. To maintain the network and ensure your experience with Sprint data is a good one they need to raise fees to cover it.

It was erroneously tagged a "4G Fee" because Sprint chose to debut this new charge on their two flagship devices at the time, the Evo 4G and Epic 4G. It's now been extended to almost all smart phones.

If you send a text to 1311 with just the word "upgrade", you'll get a reply to show when you're eligible - I'm now a Silver, but it says I'm eligible for an upgrade on 6/1/11 ($150 with 2 year agreement. (I got my EVO on the first day it came out.)

That will change on April 1st, and will move to 4/1/12

Even worse... people who are eligible prior to April 1, and are under 22 months since their last upgrade, will get their annual upgrade pushed back to 22 months.

I am not sure how Sprint Can defend that. They are literally stealing upgrades that people have earned.

I'm not sure what there is to defend. Sprint's actions aren't much different than the other carriers, and yet overall they're still a somewhat cheaper option.

Its called a grandfather clause. Other carriers know what it means.

Verizon let people use the new every two, one last time.
ATT grandfathered unlimited data users.... etc

Sprint, if you want a new 3G phone, say hello to a $10 premium.
Sprint is taking our annual upgrade without giving us one chance to use it.

Between this and the only two options you created, it's pretty much biased so far that this is nothing more than a whiny bitching thread in the making!

This. I've been with sprint for over 10 years and typically hold on to my phones till I actually NEED a new one so this "perk" they removed meant nothing to me. Honestly, I never knew it existed or that they removed it. :)

Of course you don't mind. You've absorbed abuse for so long that Windows 98 was still new the last time you switched carriers.

Stupid, irrelevant response. I have been with sprint that long and all that means is that Over the years I have done comparisons by asking others with different carriers about their satisfaction and compared the offered plans and perks of other carriers and not once has there been a reason compelling enough to get me to change over. If there was/is a reason, I would change. Only a moron bounces around the different carriers all the time to save 5 or 10 bucks. Stick with what you like until you don't like it anymore.

If you don't like sprint, bounce. Verizon costs more, at&t costs more, T-mobile is garbage, etc, etc, etc.....

how long can you hold onto that mantra that Sprint is cheaper. Now that Sprints cheapest smartphone plan is $80.

With att, you can get a smartphone for as little as $55. Outside of their 2gb data limit, Their $85 plan with any mobile anytime AND rollover is similar to sprints plan.

Att also grandfather's their Current customers as a courtesy, something that Sprint no longer cares to do.

The 16 that don't either are trolls just wanting to be different or Sprint employees and those who would murder for the company...

I have not heard about this happening for my plan, but if it does happen, I will be pissed.
Are you a customer of less than 10 years and....
Do you have a plan thats less tha $90/indv $170/family excluding fees like premium data

Then you get ready to be pissed

Why would you want to upgrade your phone (especially an Evo) after just one year? What are you "upgrading" to when the Evo is at the top of the heap (especially for just Sprint phones)?

Every Sprint customer gets incentives to upgrade after their two year contract expires. My last phone was a Palm Treo 755p, which I used for over 3 years and its still working fine. The Evo is a superior phone that is still arguably the best phone out there. Use it another year, get the 2-year upgrade incentive that everyone gets, and done. In 2 years (if i havent dropped my Evo in a toilet by accident) I'll probably still be happily using it. It's rooted, I can install any future OS upgrade whether Sprint supports it or not, and I take care of my phones.

I don't understand people who need or want a phone hardware upgrade yearly.

By the way, I've been with Sprint/Nextel for over 10 years. This yearly upgrade thing is news to me and we go through my wife's large corporate account for phones and service plans.

where are you getting this pushed back information. I upgraded on 6/4/10, my account says my contract expires on 6/3/12. that is 2 years they can't extend your contract??? and I am sure that I will get the 75$ credit toward an upgrade this summer and the 150 the following april. you are now just putting words in sprints mouth.

plus they are not stealing anything, the upgrade perk is NOT part of your contract. this crap is like saying your sky miles earned with united should be valid forever. plus you haven't been with sprint long enough to earn any such perk.

how can sprint defend this, well they can either choose to continue losing money and stop maintaining their network. or they can change their plans... like every other carrier does from time to time. your monthly cost is not even changing at this time, how can you even complain??

what are you 15? you said this same thing like 4 times within 2 pages of this thread? and plenty of people, including myself had plenty of chances to use this perk.

just pay your early termination fee and go to one of your BETTER carriers.

I have only been with Sprint since October 2009 when I got the Instinct S30 (iPhone killer LMAO!!!). But recently, my cousin jumped on my line with me so we pay about $190 every month for our two lines.

So you're saying that I will be included in this?

[EDIT: Wait a minute...we both have Evos and pay Premium Data fees of $10 each so that means that our bill is really $170...crap. I mean, it varies but usually it is above $170 ($190) every month.

Does anyone have a source for this from the Sprint website? I'd like to see it in their writing.]

To Internetpilot:
Many of us may be forced into getting a new phone if we like our firmware upgrades. When I moved from my Instinct S30 to my Samsung Moment last year, Sprint allowed Moments to receive the update from Android 2.0 to 2.1 The same might happen with the Evo but it's hard to tell since the Moment was Sprint's first Android phone. But judging based on that, many people, like myself who want to upgrade to Android 2.3 or 2.4/3.0/next version(s), will be forced into buying a new phone because they won't allow us a firmware upgrade.

So....

I just off the phone with Sprint about an unrelated issue from the premiere status. But I had to ask if there was any new info about the changes. I am a five year customer on the 1500 min $129.99 family share plan. So I wanted to know if I switched to the 3000 min $169.99 plan would that qualify me to gold status since gold is the $170 mark. And the answer is, if you are not a 10 year customer than the only way to get to gold is to get the simply unlimited plan on either a single line or a family share line. So they arent even nickel and diming us, they are penny and nickeling us.
Are you serious? $.01 ? Whatever. What can you do but take it.

They aren't stealing anything, this was a "perk", not a part of your contract. Sprint was voluntarily doing this and has a right to change the terms or cease all together at any time.

Corporate accounts aren't eligible for the Premier program, and aren't even supposed to be eligible for the upgrade pricing at all.

are you serious? where did you get 170$ from? Sprint Premier Gold and Silver

this just shows that not all sprint employees know exactly what is going on. nothing new and its better he told you what he did rather then promise you the 3000 minute plan will qualify for gold.

I can't say for sure, but sprint put 169.99 in writing. not sure I would believe some guy on a help line.

1) Where did I say anything about Sprint pushing back your contract? They took our annual upgrade, and it will be pushed back to 22 months for the full credit.

2) As I have stated many times, other carriers grandfather their current customers. If you keep asking the same questions.... then you will get the same answers.

3) This thread should remain in the EVO forums, as a lot of EVO owners are new to Sprint, and had their annual upgrade taken away before they had the chance to use it. Even the one time.

That is the reason that I stated that people should only vote, if they had their annual upgrade taken away. I noticed a couple of you are not affected by Sprints changes, yet voted anyway. Way to be honest.

4) I am not going to just pay the ETF. If I am unhappy with their customer service and their changes to my plan... they will hear it. And other potential customers will hear it too.
