G1 to AT&T

I got a G1 today and asked for an unlock code. My first question is about how long should it take to get the code via e-mail?

My second question is...my dad has AT&T Go and once the phone is unlocked, we'll try putting the SIM into the card. Will he need to get an add-on to his account for data? He has a basic flip phone and has the $40 a month plan I believe...will he be allowed to use wifi without the data package?

I got the unlock code...now the only problem is that when I inserted two different SIM cards, it said something about "...network...unsuccessful..."

I inserted a Boost Mobile SIM card (BM runs off an iden network) and an unactivated AT&T card because my dad is afraid of losing data on the card.

Each time it gave me this message. Is the phone already locked to the network? Is this due to these SIM cards? Or something else?

Data is tied to the sim card. If you insert a T-Mobile sim card with data, ie: yours that already has data, to an AT&T phone it should just boot up. Phone calls will work right away but internet settings will not work until you change them or get the text message from t-mobile that your settings are not set up properly. Eventually you'll get a download message from t-mobile, day or two, if your willing to wait. If it's a motorola, they have a site that you just enter: brand, make & model and it sends the settings to your phone instantly.
Or just google: T-Mobile internet settings for AT&T phone.
Sometimes can be a real headache trying to get the right settings, I know, done it a few times.
Good Luck.
By the way, your sim data is safe, you shouldn't lose at all, if that's the data your referring to.
