Root Help with SuperOneClick v1.7

So yesterday i decided to upgrade to official 2.2 update via kies mini.
so far, so good.

As I sat there playing with different Launchers, I figured i would take the plunge and Root my captivate so i could use custom ROMS as i heard they are EXCELLENT.

So I downloaded SuperOneClick v1.7-unmounted SD card-Turned on USB debugging...basically all the steps That i have read, and watched videos about.

When I click the "root" button I get an error message that reads

"Unhandled exception has occured in your application. if you click to continue, the aplication will ignore this error and attempt to continue, if you click quit, the aplication will close immediatley"

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

I have absolutley no idea what to do, I would greatly appreciate any help...thanks!

i have the same issue with v1.8. i have latest JRE (6U24) and i am trying this on Atrix.

i have drivers for phone (installed the motorola media link software). extra tidbit of info is that if i click "root" or "check drivers" SOC shows the error and the app itself shows:

v1.8.0.0
Checking drivers...

any solutions for the fix ?? does SOC need a specific .net and SP (i installed the latest .net v4)?

I've had the same problem. Doesn't matter what type of rooting program I've used, I get that same error. So I decided to go a different route.

A lot of newer kernels have the root programs built in. So here is how I do it:
Note: Make absolutely sure that you have the three button fix on your Captivate. To test, hold the volume up and down and the power key. Keep holding until your phone shuts off. You'll see the AT&T screen. Keep holding the keys. When the screen goes away and shows up a second time, release the power button. This should bring you into the recovery menu. Make sure your phone has this. If not, you will need to use the Odin launcher for the three button fix before you proceed.

-Download Odin3 v1.7
-Download SpeedMod kernel (I use k13c, but it shouldn't matter which one you use). You can download that here: [KERNEL] SpeedMod Captivate [K13E HPCall VoodooSnd7 SharpnessFix STABLE] - xda-developers
-On Odin, under the "option" section, make sure ONLY "F. Reset Time" is checked.
-Put your phone into download mode. (Take out SIM card and SD card. Put the battery back in and then with your phone still off, hold down both of the volume keys and plug the USB cable in). Make sure Odin is open before you put your phone into download mode.
-On Odin, it should find a COM port, so the left-most ID Com portion should light up yellow and say something like 10 or 11.
-Under the "Files [Download]" section, choose the "PDA" option.
-It will bring up your files on your computer. Find that SpeedMod kernel that you downloaded earlier. Open that .tar file so it puts it under PDA.
-Once you have this done, once again make sure that you have both "re-partition" and "auto reboot" unchecked.
-Click the start button. It will run through some steps at the top and then say that it's successful. Once it says that and the status bar on your phone is completed, unplug your phone from the USB.
-Once it's unplugged, hold the volume up and down and the power button at the same time. Once it shows the AT&T menu for the first time, release all the buttons. This will bring you to the SpeedMod recovery menu.
-Once you're at this menu, go into the SpeedMod advanced options.
-Click the ROOT/Install Superuser option.
-Then install both the Simple and the Adv options.
Once this is done, your phone is rooted.

A good video that shows how to do the Odin part of this is on the CM7 installation video. (You only have to do the part on the video with the SpeedMod part so you can root it. The rest of it is loading a 2.3.3 ROM).
Make sure to watch these carefully and use at your own risk.

Video of the CM7 installation: YouTube - Samsung Captivate/Vibrant (How To Install Gingerbread CM7)

Another video that I found that might help: YouTube - How to flash a kernel to Galaxy s i9000

A little run-through of the rooting procedure once you have SpeedMod installed on your phone: xda-developers - View Single Post - [KERNEL] SpeedMod Froyo [K13E HPCall VoodooSnd7 SharpnessFix STABLE]

Sorry this was a novel. Hope this helps. As for your custom ROM searches, I would suggest try Serendipity or Phoenix Unleashed 8.0.
