Can Apps for Android run on Android Tablets?

Theres a few Tablets/Pads that will available with Android 3 Honeycomb, and my main question is: ~Are there plans to make "Apps for Android" or other development tools for applications and multimedia creations available on tablets that run Android Honeycomb?~

I'm looking for a Tablet that students could use not only to read school manuals and watch lectures/presentations/documentaries, but also to create multimedia content such as a touch enabled magazine, multimedia applications, or web sites, so a tablet thats also a tool to create its own content. The iPad has many qualities but theres no indication the SDK will be able to run on the device for which it creates apps(iPad) and was wondering is there were alternatives to a windows based tablet (since windows OS can run many development and multimedia creation environment, though maybe not open/free nor cheap for students or all that easy to use)

thanks

Many, many apps not "designed for" tablets work fine. My e-Readers work fine. My news readers do. The Google Apps do. Many launchers have settings to tweak to work better on tablets. Games are hit or miss.

I'm not really sure where the "Only 100 tablet apps" comes from. Just because something isn't written for a specific device/OS combo doesn't mean there are not apps for it.

Well, then that's just a silly argument then to use. Why would anyone write an app that can only run on a tablet? That's like writing an app that can only run on an nVidia graphics card...

Some apps require a lot of screen real estate in order for it to be fully utilized (ie desktop publishing, full feature photoshop). In those cases, you may only want to create an app for tablet. I suppose you can create a phone version for those applications, but it will be very limited and it might not be worth the effort to create.

A good programmer always relies on "graceful fallback", and never "It wont work".

Not enough real estate? Fall back to a minimal UI.

But in reality, who would try to do full-feature photoshop on a tablet? Or, even desktop publishing? Tablets are largely media consumption and not content creation apps.

???

look at the form factors....size.

And? Anyone ever thought we'd browse the web on a 3.2" screen? Again, graceful fall-back.

the more you program into your phone ... to adapt for all situations.. the bigger the app gets.

I want quality .. not redundant large programing.

it is better to create an app for a tablet .. and one for a phone.
that might make each more fictional for each situation.

Eh, I guess I can see that... Two apps. But, as a developer (Or a person trying to make money by selling apps), I'd want to make sure I get to as many hands as I can. And, I would do that by making two UI's (Not really all that much extra coding), or as you suggest, make two apps.

to take your concern... about sales...

2 apps .. more sales.. ( sucks but true)
you have a phone and a tablet... you love app "x" and need it on both.

thanks for the response, however I think my question was misunderstood

Can you create apps from or on an Android 3 tablet. Can a student that gets an Android 3 Tablet write code in SDK and create apps for the very tablet he's using? (or would he need a notebook for the SDK to be used, in which case the notebook could not be replaced and would remain the device of choice to both design and use multimedia content)

hope its more clear :)

thanks again

I agree, if the app can be used equally well (in different ways of course) on a phone and on a tablet, then it would make sense to code for both. What I'm saying is, there may be some applications that just won't work well or it defeats the purpose of the app when it is on a phone.

You might scoff at the idea now, but tablets may be the future to content creation. Also there are niche apps that are made for certain professions that may only be used on tablet (like apps for doctor or engineer) .

Can you imagine imovie or garageband on a phone? Sure, you can dumb down the UI and severely limit the functionalities for a phone, but then the app it's not really imovie or garageband anymore, it will be just a basic video or music editor.

Yeah, I get your point now.

I get the niche market idea (X ray imaging, etc). But using it for content creation? No, I could never do serious work (In content creation) on a 10" display. I'll hazard that's about as big as tablet will get. Any bigger, and they are now LCD televisions lol

You could do app design on a tablet. It would be painful. And slow.

Development requires a full dev studio (Eclipse, etc). On the tablets (Currently) you would need to use a text editor to do the coding work.

Doable, but painful. Until someone ports Eclipse, or builds a dev studio for Android.
