Help Why do people prefer the Sprint HTC Hero over the Samsung Moment?

Why do Sprint customers prefer the Sprint HTC Hero over the Samsung Moment when the processor on the Hero is 3 years old, lags alot, and doesnt even have camera flash. Sure it has cool looking widgets and Sense UI but why would anyone choose hardware over looks?

You mean looks over hardware. And yes the Hero is a good looking phone both in interface and form factor. I personally can not stand hardware keyboards, the keys are hard to use and the slider mechanism seems to always degrade over time (some of them dont take more than a few weeks) Also the Moment is a big honkin phone. Its true no matter what anyone might say. The Droid has the same fault in my opinion. I mean at some point you might as well buy a tablet. Of course this is just my opinion and YMMV.
I love Sense UI and just everything about the Hero. I still check in here from time to time as the Moment is the only other phone worth having as far as Sprint goes right now. The Pre is a sick joke, WebOS is good but the rest is junk.
Its comes down to personal preference. Having a pocketable phone is important to me. So is having a fun UI. So that is the reason I own a Hero.

It feels a bit clunkier to me,just because of the key board.. i def like the form of the Hero better. It also feels heavier,and i love the sense ui

I guess it basically comes down to what you prefer in your phone..

Dont think that they do. I think broadly people are more aware of the Hero because its had ad support whereas the Moment hasn't.

I played with Hero for a while at the Sprint store and just found it lacked substance and was slow. Very happy with my Moment.

The Hero is ugly, but Sense UI is admittedly cool. I think more people prefer the Hero simply because they're clueless (and probably somewhat conformist), meaning they haven't heard of the Moment.

I own a Hero, and I can honestly say if you spend about an hour rooting your phone and installing a decent rom, 99% of your laggy UI issues will disappear.

That being said, after getting my brother a Moment for christmas and having a chance to play with it, I now wish I had exchanged my Hero for the Moment before the 30 day window expired. The way I see it, you can add a fancy UI to the Moment (Beautiful Widgets for example), but you can't add a keyboard and faster cpu to the Hero.

I owned both at the same time and here is why I now only the Hero.

1. Faster processor yes, but the UI on the Moment is not any faster.
2. The battery life on the Moment simply sucks. The mods in this forum had to combine battery issues in a single "SUPER THREAD".
3. The Moment is very very large. Many people like to carry their phone in their pocket and the Hero is the perfect size.
4. The Moment screen is way too bright and has a blue tint to it.
5. HTC's Sense UI is awesome. They included lots of cool gadgets. It is like the icing on the Cupcake

I dunno, I've played with my Mom's Moment, and can't stand the feel of the thing. I cannot use the hardware keyboard (neither can she), nor can I use the Moment's on screen keyboard. Stock, the Hero was pretty darn good, with the slight issue from the standard messaging app (now fixed--notice the quickness of the maintenance release from HTC compared to Samsung). That faster processor on the Moment doesn't seem to help the phone much when I compare it to my Hero. In fact, the Moment just looks so plain stock compared to the Hero(the only true out-of-the-box comparison). When you start digging into rooting the phone and really messing with things, the Hero still outshines the Moment.

Granted, to each their own when it comes to preference, but I far prefer the size of the Hero compared to the insane bulk of the Moment (not to mention the loose slider mechanism--perhaps an issue with my Mom's phone?).

Overall, I'd say go play with the things. don't make a decision based on what people on these forums say, make your own decision based on personal preference.

actually, I thought it was because of the antiquated design and lack of imagination of Samsung's design team that created something that had the looks and size of something that would've been popular 2-3yrs ago. Still like my Moment, but if people are comfortable typing on screen and enjoy the better features HTC and Sense offer, then there is no need to go to the Moment. And Sense is a lot more than just a few flashy widgets. It improves upon some of vanilla Android's failures as a smartphone where even 3rd party apps haven't been of much help.

once again, I think it's all in personal preference. Essentially, it seems to come down to either flash/no-flash, or keyboard/no-keyboard. Those seem to be the two biggest selling points for the moment over the hero. The Hero wins people over by the smaller design, and then Sense.

I was being a bit facetious. Most people don't even know what Sense offers over vanilla android outside of that stupid gigantic weather, clock and message widget. Which is evidenced by some of the stellar responses in this and other threads that can only describe the Hero and Sense in one or two syllable elementary school level words.

I don't understand why everyone is always making a point of how huge the Moment is. It's honestly not that big of a phone. I've had a moment, I've had a Hero, they both fit easily into my pocket. I compared the 2 and the moment is maybe 2mm thicker and slightly wider but it's really no big deal. Yes the design is not as round and it is more square/clunkier but I had a touch pro 2 and it was bulkier and heavier. I've also played with the droid and while thinner, those square edges make it a real awkward phone compared to the moment in my opinion.

I guess that's the main thing. It's all a matter of opinion. I guess some of us are a little more accepting of a couple of milimeters here and there.

you just answered your own question. I came from a Palm Centro and Treo Pro. The Moment is huge, and ungodly clunky with the rubberized hard case on it.

That's another difference of opinion. For some reason I've never liked cases on phones. A rubber case will add bulk to any phone. I tried a rubber case on my 3rd hero in attempt to keep dust out of the screen. It didn't keep the dust out and made it harder to hit things on the edges of the screen. A Hero with a case is probably approaching the same size as a moment without a case.

well of course a case will add bulk. People are paying for protection. Some are happy going naked and don't mind having a phone that shows all the bumps and bruises it develops over time. But if you're going to compare size differences you better encase the Moment too because why would the same person use a case on one phone and not the other? And a Seidio Innocased Hero is still smaller than the Moment. Which brings up another argument in favor of the Hero; Accessories. There are more for the Hero and that can matter to some. Heck, it's one reason why iphones and ipods sell as well as they do. Because every company in the sun makes an accessory for them.

I thought the dust problem was at the seam of the button pad and the screen where a hard case doesn't offer any coverage so it wouldn't protect against dust.

SenseUI is only appealing to those who don't want to have to actually customize the phone (this isn't an insult, just some people don't want the hassel of doing it).. You can customize the phone to almost look/feel the same as the SenseUI with different applications but you aren't locked into only using that..

Sense UI still allows for customization, you make it sound like you're locked into one type of format. The difference is you don't have to rely on the Market, the cool widgets everyone is chasing after (I also did on my Moment) are already available on the Hero.

It seems like many people dislike Sense because it slows down the Hero, I don't seem to have much of a problem or it is so minuscule that I don't notice.
