Help Phones Very Slow

Rooting means to gain root (base administrator) access to the operating system. This allows the user to alter and/or remove any file including the provider and mfg installed "crap" ware. Rooting is almost always necessary to use and/or flash alternate (non provider/mfg provided) roms or firm ware. Flashing in the context of smartphones is overwriting some part of the OS or device firm ware. Detailed explanation can get more complicated, but that's the basics.

when you reboot the phone, it is supposed to clear the "temp files" and clear up all kinds of space. That's why rebooting works so well most of the time. It is a memory problem.
Make sure you keep an eye on your apps until you learn which ones are good and which ones aren't. If it is an app you can't live without, then deal with whatever memory issues it has.
You might find the same thing made by someone else in the market that doesn't hog up memory resources.
For me, if the app sucks up memory when I'm not using it, then it is a deal breaker and gets trashed.

Check out sdx forums. If you're going to root, you may as well update to 2.2:
Moment - 2.2 Development
If you're nervous about moving to 2.2, I can tell you that The Wife's Moment is still running well on rooted 2.1, but she never uses wifi so she never has a lockup. Data lockup appears to be completely fixed in 2.2.

Had a same issue last night. Phone dogged down to a crawl. Emptied all my voicemails & text threads and it picked up speed immed.

Just my .02
Something else you might want to try is the dalvik-cache to /cache mod. Moves dalvik-cache to the mostly-unused and super huge cache folder, freeing up space in the data folder for more apps and "breathing room" for android. You do need to be rooted to use it, because you apply the zip in recovery. This link goes to the Intercept section of sdx, but the files work on the Moment.

follow this thread to get your phone rooted
How To Root Your Samsung Moment (2.2.2 Froyo)

then go to the development section that headlessponch linked you to and flash a rom that you like.
I suggest either the Keylime (previously called Ultimate) or the Cadman rom. They both have all of the tweaks and fixes you will need.

Get all of your files together so you can go from start to finish in one sitting.
Should take less than an hour.

Once you get rooted and get to the point of having a full EB28 rom, you'll want to calibrate your battery meter again. When you reflash a rom, it has to rebuild the files that do things like control the battery gauge. When that file gets rebuilt, it puts 100% at whatever the current charge is. So recalibrating it will let you actually set 100% at 100%. So you can get full use of your battery.

you can also look into changing your settings for faster 3g speeds. you can search on that site for both threads to tell you how to do it.

The rooting process is easy. Flashing the roms is easy. The hardest part is not leaping for joy when your phone boots up in less than a minute, and you can call someone without freezing your phone and the thing runs stupid fast.

You can also look into getting a bit faster 3g speeds.
