Root Will rooted phones get the new OTA update?

I have never done a OTA, I always got it early. Does it give me the option to install or not? The problem is that it does claim to solve texting issues, and I have had some (not getting texts, wrong person getting mine, etc). If this OTA solves those, could I get it and then "re-root"?

Yes, I followed along as you helped someone else do this yesterday and today, and it did not look smooth! :0) I had figured I would go with Bugless Beast (for simplicity) or Cyanogen (simply because everyone raves about it), but I will definitely look into UD as well.

Yes, I saw you mention to Coronach that he should use Titanium (which I have) and My Backup Pro (which I don't yet). My noob question is whether one of these two also is where you do the nandroid backup. And do I really need both or is it just extra security?

Oh, another question, I did the code entry to solve my redraw problem (the one that fixes the home screens in memory for good). Will this modification be "undone" when I wipe and flash a new ROM?

The problems with my Droid were not caused by Ultimate Droid. Once I got to that point, UD installed quite smoothly. It was getting to that point that was bumpy. However, no matter what ROM you install, you'll have to go through the same procedure I did. It's worth mentioning that I never had a crash, didn't have to touch my recovery stuff, etc. The flashing of ClockworkMod just wasn't working right.

Here's a question, if you have a custom ROM, you won't get the OTA, right?

My understanding, based upon my experience yesterday, is that they do different things. TiBU backs up your apps, as if you never did anything to the phone. You do your wipe and install, DL TiBU through the market, hit restore, and EVERYTHING is back, just where you left it. However, it doesn't do some of the system data (sms, call log). MyBackup pulls that over.

Coronach, that is good to know. And your question is what I would like to confirm as well, since it is the primary reason I would be flashing a custom ROM. I believe so, but confirmation would be nice.

Edit: ah, thanks for the clarification. And the nandroid backup saves even more stuff from the nandroid folder?

To clarify a few things. You can use ROM Manager to make your backups (hit "Back up current ROM") or your can do a Nandroid backup from your recovery interface. I use the back up option in ROM Manager and have not had a problem with it. It also lets your name your backup as you want (though you can't have any spaces in the name.) This makes an image of your current working ROM that can be restored in case of problems. It is the most important backup you can make. When you restore it you end up with exactly what you had at the time of the back up.

Titanium backup will back up your apps and its data. It will also back up your system apps and such, but that is not good as often system apps will conflict with your new ROM. Having your apps and data backed up is nice only if you have saved games and other data you want otherwise your apps will automatically download from the market.

My Backup Pro backs up text messages and call logs from what I understand. Unless you need you text messages and call logs you don't need it.

I hope this clears up the backup stuff.:)

Most all of the current Custom ROMs will block any OTA's. Generally when a new OTA comes out there will be a post telling you how to modify the build.prop file to stop the notifications. Kratos posted the last one for FRG83D and will probably post the next one when the information is available.

Edit: Here is the link to the old post. http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/234509-how-prevent-frg83d-ota.html It is probably the same for the new one but you will have to substitute the new version number and release name ie:2.2.2 and FRG83G if that is the correct information.

Quite likely... and it is probably going to unroot your phone, as it closes back-door exploits. You may want to install a custom ROM in a hurry.
Android 2.2.2/FRG83G has been out for a bit now. I doubt that since Motorola has stopped making the A855 that they're going to worry about putting something in an OTA that either RATC or flashing a custom recovery only .sbf file cannot root.

Well, you really can't go wrong with UltimateDroid 2.5, I have THREE Droids running it :)

Chief, although I saw you're running a Droid 1, I have been avidly searching all night to find a working link to download the UltimateDroid V10 for my Droix X. I have UD on my motodroid and love it, but I can't get a working like for the UD just made for the X. Any ideas???

I know you weren't directing this question to me and I haven't used a UD ROM in awhile...but...a quick look at The Ultimate Droid website suggests to me that there isn't a current UD ROM for the Droid X.

Also, V10 sounds like an old version to me.

Ok...I decided to do a quick search and came up with THIS THREAD. Looks like UD might be coming to the X soon.
