N64oid by Yongzh

I'm ignoring the troll thread (n64oid=junk) and posting here.

I tried Extreme-G 2, one of my favorite N64 games... and it's unplayable on a Samsung Epic. That's pretty sad... but it's also a pretty intense game. I would have been shocked it it ran well.

just tried out extreme-g 2 on my atrix. I think the n64 and psx emulators are where you will see the biggest difference in the dual cores (esp the tegra 2) vs the last gen chipsets.

Eg2 ran extremely well at full framerate, but the button placement currently makes it difficult to play since Z is acceleration. I mapped n64oid to make my vol up rocker as Z and it makes it a little bit more playable but still awkward to hold.

Well I can't say I'm TOO surprised that the atrix runs it that well. I thought the Epic's GPU was still one of the best, but it seems the dual-core CPU helps a ton as well.

Once the race starts, my game drops to about 10 frames a second or something along those lines. Changing frame-skip to 4 doesn't help.

I eagerly await a tegra 2 phone with a keyboard to come to Sprint...

Maybe Yonghz will update the app to be compatible with all the Galaxy S phones. I think all of them should be able to handle this App because of their great gpus. So you might not need a Tegra 2 device.

When it works it runs great on my Fascinate (rooted 2.2). Unfortunately it seems a bit temperamental. Sometimes I'll have no problems loading the Zelda games. Other times they just won't load. So far it seems to be without rhyme or reason. And Banjo Kazooie worked great when I first got it and now just won't load ever. I don't know if one of the updates messed it up (while I'm improving the performance of a number of other games, I should add). Does anyone else have problems with certain games working only some of the time? Any suggestions?

Ya emulators are all CPU only. If them to utilizes GPU, it would run a whole lot better. However the programing effort to utilize OpenGL for the emulator are very difficult, and much more effort intensive.

Put it this way, if we can make use of the GPU in emulators, then we can put PS2 and XBox emulator on most mid to high end android smartphone. Even XBox 360 emulator might be possible for some of the higher end android smartphone using Tegra 2 chip-sets.

So has anyone noticed a big difference between playing n64oid on a rooted and non-rooted phone?

I think so but I think the combination of rooting and other tweaks might help such as overclocking if the phone is capable of being OC'd.

My Moto Droid is overclocked but still struggles with most of the ROMS. I can play Mario 64 and Mario Kart without too much lag and the Moto Droid is old compared to the newer phones.

I will be MORE than happy with a Dreamcast emu...that will be just too much. I know there is one in the works but not much news lately...just imagine. Skies of Arcadia on your phone...or Code Veronica or Grandia 2...or Daytona! Gosh the possibilities. :)

Crazy Taxi? Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!

And Marvel vs Capcom 2, I would jizz my pants.

Technically it is very possible, see this anandtech article:

So have some faith, maybe in the not too distant future, a developer will be brave enough to port a optimized version of a XBox or PS2 emulator to Android.

You need many times the CPU power for emulation, it's possible with older consoles because the hardware they used is so much slower.

xbox for example I think used a 733MHz intel processor and Geforce 4 (or simalar), theres no way current phones will be able to emulate this at an reasonable speed, also the tegra 2 chip is great for a mobile GPU but it still doesnt come close to raw performance of these consoles.

We may get a Dreamcast or PS2 emulator at some point over the next year but don't expect anything more unless we have some major hardware upgrades. :)

It is true that emulator overhead is the biggest problem for emulator developers. However for a highly skill developer and given enough dedication, it is not unimaginable for he/she to reduce the overhead to a workable level.

As for the hardware. Nvidia already demonstrated that their next gen quad-core cpu (Cortex A9) will be as powerful as a 2GHz core2duo processor, so since Tegra 2 is dual core (Cortex A9), it will be equivalent of a single core 1.5-2 GHz core2solo processor, which can beat the xbox 733MHz (Pentium III) Intel processor hands down. From the GPU perspective of the Tegra 2, it is far more powerful then the GeForce4 (Ti4200 to be precise) series cards. (So here is the proof: SGX535 is the Intel GMA500, while the GMA500 is slow by today's standard, it will play older games better then any GeForce4 series card. And the hummingbird processor in Samsung Galaxy S phone use the SGX540 processor, which in turn is about 2-3 time faster then the SGX535, which is still about 10-20% slower then Tegra 2's GPU)

So from CPU prospective, Tegra 2 have 2-3 time more computation power then XBox, and from GPU perspective, the computational difference is also about 2-3 time. So again from a technical perspective, Tegra 2 is can emulate XBox, given a highly optimized Emulator.

I think the biggest problem will come from a legal and time investment perspective. Will any skill developer take on the task, and the legal risk?

Is anyone else having this problem: after about 20 seconds of holding two buttons (like the analog stick and A on the touch screen) they stop working for about 10 seconds. This pretty much limits my racing game compatability. Holding one seems fine, but both together causes it to sort of time out. Suggestions?

I would love a dreamcast emulator. I wouldn't expect many more emulators to come out for newer consoles on current phones however as technology progresses I'm sure at some point we will see people running ps3, xbox 360, and wii emulators on android phones however they will have even more powerful consoles attached to their televisons

yep, its a bug with the atrix or something. I tried it on my captivate and it worked fine. What I did (but is somewhat uncomfortable) is set "A" or whatever accelerate is to the volume up button.

Or even better, connect your wiimote + nunchuck to your phone and play with that!
