Had a young guy cut me off in traffic. Construction zone. I'm in the lane that ends and everyone is alternating taking turns merging EXCEPT for said idiot that tried to run me into the barricades.
No big deal. I didn't get mad. I didn't flip him off.
Went to the next intersection and got in the turning lane next to the guy in front of him who is also a 'seasoned driver'. He looks at me and we both motion about that guy being an idiot. I ask him to let me in front of him and he does. Now this is still a one-lane road in front of us that turns into two lanes on our side up a little ways. Well, when it turned into 2 lanes we kinda, well went a little slow in both lanes .

We had an incident of road rage last summer where a guy thought a woman in a blue car had cut him off. When he pulled up a little later next to a blue car driven by a woman that was stopped in a traffic backup, he pulled out a gun and shot at the car. The trajectory of the bullet looks like he was aiming for the gas cap. The bullet went through the body of the car and hit them woman in the elbow and leg. And, it wasn't the woman who had cut him off earlier, just a commuter sitting in traffic.

The shooter then continued to his job, left early to go to his lawyers, and turned himself in to the authorities after he realized there were dozens of witnesses. Abut a month later, right before additional charges were to be brought against him, he was found dead in his house.

So, I give idiot drivers -- be they rude, inconsiderate, overly aggressive or just plain bad drivers -- a very wide berth. If it really bothers me, I just imagine that they have had two large coffees from the Wawa and are in a hurry to get to the next rest stop.

I do my best to slow down reckless drivers, unless they are signalling an emergency. I don't want it on my conscience that someone I could have slowed down killed someone a little ways up the road... but that's just me.

I think we all do ourselves a disservice by not putting social pressure on people to act right. Yeah, there may be idiots with guns(although most gun owners are very law-abiding people). If you let people get away with things, they think they should be able to do it. This goes with all aspects of life and this is why we have people that act they way they do. We are at fault for allowing this to happen.
Now, with that said in certain areas and circumstances you can't be the "police" and I realize that. But I think we need to do more to put social pressure on people to act right.
The little lesson we did this morning I think is a good way to go about it. Now this kid knows the people around them know he was being a jerk and maybe(just maybe) he will think about it.
I had a great lesson put to me when I was young. I (stupidly) flipped off a trucker. Well, he and his buddies put me "in the pocket" and ran me to the edge of the road and then stopped. Lesson learned . I didn't call and complain to the companies. I didn't call the police. I figured they taught me a lesson and I wised up.

Teaching people a lesson is fine, teaching people a lesson in moving vehicles with other people around you, especially when that person likely isn't in the mood to learn that lesson, is dangerous.

A simple honk should be indicative enough that you're displeased with what they are doing.

Anything else and it becomes unimportant who the original aggressor was, chances are the fight itself is putting other people in danger.

That's how I've always thought about it anyways. Though, keeping my own frustrations in check is no easy task.

As much as I hate people overly anxious to pass me, hey thats their ticket, their wreck or hell never know what is going through their head.

My biggest pet peeve though.. and i have occassionally used the bird for this one.. Would be turn signals.

I hate when people sit there like a deer in the headlights with no turn signals on, or decide to cut across my line of traffic randomly..

the only other t hing that bothers me but, I won't react to it is when epople feel the need to get infront of me and I'm going 55.

I have to drop down to 25 because, they pull out and go slllooowwww

Then after 5 minutes behind them.. we only get back up to 45 and we are still in the 55..

Why be in such a hurry to pull out in front of me but, take your sweet time building up speed again?

I hate when people attempt to pass you while there is oncoming traffic headed towards you, especially when they don't have enough room or time to complete the pass. You are forced to really slow down just to let them back into the lane so they don't go head-on with the oncoming car. Then after they are in front of you, they drive slower than you, and you were doing the speed limit.

I drive to work down a long stretch of 2-lane road. One lane going in, one lane coming out. The speed limit is 60-65mph and this happens to me about once a week.

I'd say that a high, very high percentage of drivers feel that the posted speed limit is a minimum, not the maximum it is.

I honestly believe you are right. I wish that the speed limit was either enforced, or done away with.

However, I don't think that will EVER be the case.

If the speed limit were truly enforced, then people would actually drive the speed limit, and then police wouldn't be able to issue as many tickets as they do.

Speed limits are a revenue generating practice. No more, no less.

one of the scariest times ive had while driving, was when i was going down the highway on a rainy night, not down-pouring but enough to make the roads slick. im in the left lane going probably about 63, and about half a mile ahead of me in the middle lane is a blue corolla with out there lights on driving along, then when im maybe 10 feet behind their bumper they pull into my lane doing no more then 40, so to avoid hitting them I had to cut to the right and go into as much of a controlled skid as possibleafter a 360 turn i rest for a bit and continue on. after about a mile i pass by the car and look inside, to my surprise a penguin was driving the car!

So wait, HE cut YOU off by maintaining his lane? You said that you needed over so would it not have been you cutting him off? I wouldn't have let you over either. They puts signs 1-2 miles back telling you the lane is ending and to merge over. 99% of people merge over and get in line. Then there's always a few like you that have to run all the way up to the barricades to get a little bit ahead of everyone else who got over and is patiently going through it.

If you choose to continue trying to merge into a lane that's occupied and hit the barricade as a result then you sir are the idiot! No law says he has to let you over. Sure it might be courteous but it's not required.

WOW >_>;; That's just...I'm speechless that someone has that much issue that he would take his gun on another person for being perceived that he was cut off. Can you link to the news article, I want to pass it on to my colleague. I'm just happy that I don't live in a country that everyone has access to gun. I don't think I'll be driving if I did.

Now that I'm older and (well, at risk of sounding conceeded instead of wiser I'll just say...) more patient, I pretty much let the idiots of the road think they own it. No skin off my back.

One thing that helps me keep my cool now is just imagining that asshole driver is 'me as a kid'. Because ashamed as I am to admit it.... I was the biggest idiot you'd ever seen when I first got my license. I mean seriously stupid. Passing semi-trucks through blind turns... tailgating cars that were pissing me off because they weren't going 15 mph over the posted speed limit.... passing on the shoulder.... yeah I did all that dumb shit. I honestly don't know how I survived those testosterone filled days behind the wheel?

I can say without a doubt that I wouldn't have learned the lesson you were attempting to teach this young driver you were schooling Wullf. I would have just passed the both of you on the shoulder of the highway like the dumbass I was. The fact that he didn't shows he has more sense than I did. And that's how I deal today with punks like I used to be... knowing full well I can't teach them anything they aren't willing to learn.

Only speeding tickets, maturity, or getting into an accident will ever make those idiots ever change their ways. It's unfortunate, but true.
