What phone will work on Rogers?

Hey I want to order a phone from US and have it working here for Rogers.
I currently have an iPhone 3G with a dataplan. I just want to swap sim cars without telling Rogers. I don't want to get screwed in to another 3 year contract.

I really liked the HTC Desire HD but I don't think it will work. Also the google phones, either the Nexus or the Nexus S interest me.

I don't want to buy a phone and then it doesn't work. I also don't believe Rogers will be adding any good android phones anytime soon, probably never.

My contract with rogers expires in 1 year, but my iPhone is crapping out on me so I want to just buy a phone to last me 2 years, then I can get a new contract somewhere else.

The Droid HD is now available from Telus. You can get it without contract for $499. It should fully work on Rogers once you remove a SIM lock.
Also Google has confirmed some time ago that Nexus S will be available on Canadian carriers later this year (March?).
The last option is to buy a used Nexus One working on Rogers on Craigslist or Kijiji. I saw some being sold there.

I've heard that the Telus phones will only work on Rogers 3G, not 2G.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, looking for a phone to replace my aging Magic, but 2G data is very important to me, since up at my family cottage where I spend most of the summer there's no 3G coverage. Without 2G I'm screwed.

Rogers is coming out with the Xperia Arc and Play, which use the same processor and similar hardware to the Desire HD, but those are out for me since Cyanogenmod doesn't cover the SE phones. The Desire HD was at the top of my list but when I found out 2G didn't work, it, along with the rest of the Telus phones, were off the table.

I'm pondering the Desire Z from Bell. I've never had a slider phone with a physical keyboard and would like to try it, and have heard good things about the Z. The only thing holding me back is that it's an older phone already. According to phonecompatibility.net it should work fully on Rogers, but can anybody confirm for me?

They do support the X10,Im running CyanogenMod 6.1.3,So far its the best 2.2 rom for the X10

I do hope they do!!! I'm planning on getting the Bell's Moto Atrix this weekend!!! Any AT&T phones will work on Rogers once it's carrier unlock. If you like the Desire HD, the AT&T version is the HTC Inspire 4G.

Roze, where are you buying the Atrix from ?

Bell or BestBuy....which ever one is going to sell me the phone. I talked to a Bell rep last week and he told me that they only sell the Atrix to Bell customers only. They will sell it with no contract to a Bell customer but not off contract (to anyone else). I'm with Rogers. He showed me the Atrix sales manual and he pointed out a 'loophole' where it says sold base on activiation. It did not state if the activiation is on pre-paid of post-paid and told me I should be able to get it on pre-paid (at no extra cost and I get a $15 prepaid credit). I'm just hoping that the unlock codes will appear online soon!

Which city are you in,let me know how much it sets you back :)
Toronto.

*grumbles grumbles grumbles* seem like that loophole doesn't work  Need to activate ($35) and then get a month to month with the cheapest being $30 :/ So that adds another $65 on top of the $599. So the phone is a whooping $750!!! >_>;; flucky this *argh*

Geezus,I want to try to upgrade to the play, then sell it and use that cash towards the atrix.Im in brampton. I hope thats gonna work for me :)
Your contract is up now or ??? When is Rogers releasing the Play, I don't think there's a date on it yet. I think if you can upgrade to the iPhone4, you can sell it for more? I always think that the iPhone market is much better if you're reselling it...especially unlock.

Well when I contacted them and they put me on a retention plan, they said I can upgrade. I told them I will upgrade later when something decent comes out. I Xperia Play,is suppose to be released in Q1,so it should be soon.
I think the Iphone 5 will be out in Aug 2011,so either way ill be waiting.
Thanks for your advice with the Iphone stuff :)

Apple always release the iPhones end of June of every year :) if you can wait for the iPhone5, you should! iPhone4 will only sell for premium price before June.

There is no support from Cyanogen for the X10. Some developers took the CyanogenMod and made it work on the X10 and while they might be working closely, officially there is no support.

To answer the first question, basically any phone that works with AT&T will work with Rogers.

Also getting a Nexus One might not be a guarantee that it will work, they have a version that would only work on T-Mobile which wouldn't work with Rogers. Just look at the frequencies:

From Wikipedia:

GSM/GPRS/EDGE on the 850 and 1900 MHz bands (Also known as 2G GSM, or 2.5G in the case of EDGE)
UMTS/HSPA on the 850 and 1900 MHz bands (Also known as 3G GSM)
