- you should see your original 2.1 backup ROM
- <select> <2011-10-xx.xx.xx.xx.ROM><restore> [it should look something like 2011-05-06.21.01.23]
- xRecovery will start to install the original 2.1.1 ROM [the ROM you've backed up in Step 1] from your phone's SD Card.

Do or Do not... There is no Try - Yoda

Hi,

Well... most android phones have gone from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3 - Xperia X8 will be stuck on Eclair 2.1.

To put it in perspective. It is like saying most computers have gone from Windows Vista to Windows 7 - Xperia X8 users are using Windows XP.

Have a look at this article from Android Community Website for the major upgrades from Froyo to Gingerbread.

ANDROID 2.3 GINGERBREAD FEATURES AND LIST OF WHAT&#8217;S NEW

But... just take note the 2.3.3 CM Hackdroid ROM is custom-recoded to be compatibile to the Xperia X8

So... A few things to note.
Limitations
1) NO Multi-touch for Xperia X8 forever [Xperia X8 has Capacitive (single touch) Screen]
2) Xperia X8 only has an Accelerometer

I don't want to list all the limitations of the Xperia X8.
It will make me want go out and buy a Nexus S :)

Xperia X8 is still a very good mid-size android phone.
It is still quite highly rated in most decent mobile websites.

cheers! :)

This >2.2 custom roms are garbage ! :) Nothing works perfectly, still there are reboot problems on each of them after you close an app which uses root acces -.- and also random reboots are pretty annoying to me o_O Also I heard some guys complaining about the overheating of the mobile while browsing internet via wi-fi o_O
Will take a long time to find something stable for our devices ;)

Hi,

I agree with you, nothing will work decently on the Xperia X8 not even the Eclair 2.1.1 ROM from Sony Ericsson. The phone has a 600 MHz Qualcomm processor but its under-clocked (quadrant score = 440). So users must Root and JIT (quadrant score = 550) for a 25% increase in performance.

Begs the Question: What is wrong here? Hardware? Software?
[want a hint? (thinking outside-the-box) -> iPhone 3G (circa 2008) only has a 412 MHz processor - more on that later :)]
Answer: Optimized operating software!

The >2.2? I tried the 2.2 CM Froyo 0.15 and all the earlier ROMS - they are faulty. And the hackware developers openly announce their ROM faults - too many reboots and too much battery usage etc...

BUT

I tried the latest 2.3.3-CM Legend (16 March 2011 build). Now this build is solid! (no camera and no compass) but everything else works. This build is what I am using for 2 days now... only one reboot when I tried to crash it with multiple tap access to app functions and their settings.

One has to also take into consideration that Gingerbread 2.3 is built to showcase the Nexus S and later Honeycomb 3.0 is for Android Tablets. But let's not forget that Android OS is generic, it is only purpose built (modified-to-suit) by individual mobile by phone manufacturing companies.

[Note: iOS for iPhone is considered as custom-build since iOS does not run in any other brand phones - by the way, my iPhone 3G (412 MHz) can run dual boot iOS and Android Froyo 2.2 - quadrant score = 800 (hacked by PlanetBeing-DevTeam). And I consider my newly acquired Xperia X8 [Revision 3 (circa late 2010)] as an upgrade... but I digress]

The Xperia X8's hardware is not the most advanced. In fact it is lacking a few important components:

New Technology - required
1) Multi-touch - high resolution screen (X8's captive single touch screen was invented in 1995)
2) 802.11n - with at least WEP2 (X8's 802.11g was invented in 1997)
3) Dual Camera (X8's 3.2MP Cam invented 2003)

New Technology - never intended for the Xperia X8
1) Multi-core processor (Dual-core is going to be the norm now [e.g. iPhone 5 - June 2011])
2) Three-axis Accelerometer and Three-axis Gyroscope (better user & gaming experience)
3) Inductive charging of phones [e.g. Palm]
4) OTA Sync and Streaming technologies [e.g. iPhones and Nexus S]
5) SIP Internet Calling protocol technology - (Fring/Skype/Messenger/Xbox Live)
6) NFC Near Field Communication technology - (Credit Card purchases)

X8's Android Eclair 2.1.1 software's keyboard is rubbish
And Eclair 2.1.1 is too slow in rendering movies
And Eclair 2.1.1 lags when playing games (quadrant score = 440)
And Eclair 2.1.1 does not install apps to SD Card (bummer with a X8 phone)

At the moment my X8's using Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 it's fast, stable and it's quadrant score = 1039! Woot Hoo! (Hi-5! hack developers and a sucker-punch to the big corporation).

The 2.3.3 Hackdroid ROM is currently the best alternative ROM compared to the stock SONY Eclair 2.1.1 ROM for my Xperia X8 imho :)

It is too bad SONY Ericsson is not developing any more software upgrades for the Xperia X8.
The Xperia X8 phone hardware is certainly capable of performing better with Gingerbread 2.3.

If there are SONY Ericsson development staff out there reading this post - listen up!
We want Official 2.3.3 for Xperia X8 :) coz I love using my Xperia X8 phone.

I say no more... coz I might just convince myself go out and buy a Nexus S when my contract runs out next month.

cheers :)

I am using 2.3.3 CM HACKDROID Legend for the past 2 days.
I am not going back to Eclair 2.1.1

Xperia X8 using the Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM is fast and relative stable (only reboot once so far).

Caution: Camera and Compass NOT working :(

I don't need a compass - I use Nav & Maps when I drive :)
I don't need a camera - I use my Canon EOS 5D when I take pictures :)

Batt life is good: 50% left from - 2 albums of music play - 1 hour driving to work and back home using 3G-Nav - 1 hour gameplay -1 hour on emails - 5 hours on standby (have not re-charged my batt yet).

So far so good! Hi-5!

cheers :)

I need camera. any workaround for it? no?

Sorry no camera for now.

There are efforts to resolve the camera and compass issues by others trying to port over the modules from the Xperia X10 project (J&Z and Erasmux).

But they are not as fast as racht because he is coding every night.

I am "listening" to that webpage everyday now :)

I will keep you guys posted on the developments.

cheers :)

Hey man,do you need to update to the latest official SEUS 2.1 in order to flash and use the cm7 2.3.3 legend ROM?! Also, what about the ext partitions on the SDCard? Do I need to delete this? (I m using this for apps2sd at the moment).
N.

Hi,

2.3.3 Gingerbread ROM can install all applications (that are not system installed) into SD Card. There is no longer the need for additional partitions on the SD Card.

I used a 2GB SD Card - 1 partition - set to primary - reformatted (I kept a backup on my PC).
APPS2SD and Link2SD was a work around for 2.1 ROMs which did not have the capability to install apps to SD Card. From Froyo 2.2+ ROMs onwards APPS2SD/Link2SD functions were incroporated into its operating framework - to check (after you have successfully installed 2.3.3 ROM) <click>

<settings><applications><manage applications>

just tap any application you have installed (NOT system installed) to see the following functions
<Force stop> - to force app to stop
<uninstall> - to uninstall the app
<clear data> - to clear data input from using the app
<move to phone> - to move the app to phone memory
<move to SD card> - to move app to SD Card
<clear cache> - to clear cache made by the app

you will also see system <permissions info> the app is allowed to access

Some things you MUST have BEFORE you install the ROM:
1) Rooted phone and xRecovery installed on your Xperia X8.
2) Baseband MUST be xxxxxxx15 - check <settings><About phone>
3) MUST have the latest BusyBox v1.1.7
- if not go to Android Market <install> BusyBox Installer <exit> Market
- <launch><install> BusyBox 1.1.7

QUOTE (from racht @ XDA Developers)

To install use xRecovery, busybox+xrecovery preinstalled in rom so you can restore backups after.
If upgrading from old Floyo to newer, do custom backup/restore and restore only /system partition, all your data will be preserved.

These roms REQUIRE latest baseband version xxx15
Take the new baseband and flasher from my server <here>
or just the firmware if you have the flash tool already, <here>
Check if u need update by typing "busybox uname -a", u need this (notice date) :
Linux localhost 2.6.29 #1 PREEMPT Fri Dec 17 18:35:45 2010 armv6l GNU/Linux
blagus - thanks a lot !

Thanks go to J&Z and Erasmux!
Enjoy !

Thanks gabeyong!!!

Well, just installed the 2.3.3 CM HACKDROID Legend Rom!
Everything OK except the SD Card! Its not recognized at all...
I ll try remove ext2/3 partitions and see what happens.
(I m just scared of losing the ability to restore my old
2.1 root Russian ROM,so I ll have to be sure before deleting anything.)

Atm,I m trying to make this work with my old 2GB SD Card just
to be on the safe side with this 2.3.3 ROM! Installed Titanium
Backup PRo and restoring apps and system data.

Brightness Levels dont work.

Any tips/hints/info/feedback ?

Maybe I ll just have to re Flash the ROm and install apks one by one again...
Who knows?!? Maybe I ll give 2.3.2 CM HACKDROID v0.9 a try.
Seems to be less buggy judging by the user comments.
My phone is stuck in an endless hackdroid loop at start up for like 5-6 minutes now.
I guess you could say it s an epic fail in the end...

Hi,

Old ROMs do not work.
I have tried every single one on that webpage including Froyo 0.15. Hangs + Reboot too many times :) A lot of people says Froyo 0.15 is the most stable but my phone not stable.

If you are using the 2.2.3 CM-Legend [23:59 16 March 2011 build]

Root + xRecovery + Baseband Version - xxxxxxxxxxx15 + Busybox 1.1.7

SD Card should have 1 partition - FAT32 - Primary
If you are using an old SD Card -> recommended to re-partition -> FAT32 - 1 partition
Then copy <cm7-Legend> folder into <SD Card><xRecovery><backup>

<restore> using xRecovery
<skip setup>
<settings><privacy><factory data reset>

<reboot>

And that's it...

cheers :)

Hi,

this may be the first ROM that is stable in X8.
Issues:
Video playback (tried many players - embedded player practically not working) not smooth
Bluetooth problem: It seems to be activated (icon appears) but no bluetooth device can be identified (headset can not be found either).

Also battery seems to drain fast

So please comment on the above (+possible / alternative solutions).

Hi,

I am sorry to hear that you have some problems with the 2.3.3 CM legend ROM

Video Player:
Currently the best alternative video player is VPlayer Advanced v1.0.1
It has been updated for Gingerbread 2.3
Just create a folder <video> on your SD Card and <copy> your videos to the folder.
The VPlayer Advanced app will auto scan on startup and you can then <click> the video to watch.

Oh... be sure to switch off your screen time out feature so it doe not interfere with your movie viewing pleasure.

VPlayer Advanced v1.0.1 <-- here

Bluetooth:
I don't use the bluetooth feature - I use the speaker phone function when I am driving to pick up calls. So I can't troubleshoot the blutooth function for you. Sorry.

Battery Issues:
As for the battery drain... I am not sure.
The first time I installed the 2.3.3 CM ROM my battery only lasted 1 day.
After reading the XDA forums I discovered that after the install I had to <factory reset> the phone before I can start to use the phone.

<restore> again... using xRecovery
<skip setup> go to
<settings><privacy><factory data reset>
<reboot>

So I re-installed and factory reset the phone... I have been using the phone with 2.3.3 CM Legend ROM for the past 2 days it had no problems.

My Battery lasted 1.5 days moderate use with wifi connected (games, phone calls, sms, email and movie watching) before I had to recharge.

Hope that helps :)

Ok,after 2-3 days trying various ROMS,I think its safe to say that the CM07 2.3.3 is still too buggy to use.
Apps2SD doesn't fully work, lots of crashes with SU apps, camera no go,random rebooted and FCs,WIFI stops working after a while etc but its really really fast. But that's it!

I m on Floyo 0.15 now.Still fast but SU still makes the ROM to reboot, plus MOVE2SD still doesn't work for me.Maybe its cost I don't have an ext3 partition on my SD anymore, but still its an issue.

The bottom line: Use Floyo if you like Android 2.2 and don't bother with any 2.3.3 ROM for now, unless you have too much time on your hands...

Hi gabeyong,
Thank you for your reply and assistance.

I have installed CM7.X8.J005 and is much better:

Battery is OK
Video Playback OK

Problems:

It reboots in some cases
Camera

And again Bluetooth does not work (OK we can live without camera but bluetooth is a communication component and is more important).

Since I am new to the forum, how and where I can address bluetooth problem (and other issues)?

Also, others state that Floyo 0.15 is still the best working solution. I have also tried to install it but I have a checksum error at xrecovery. Doess this happen because I have the latest firmware (baseband ..15) for X8 (i have the latest update from Sony ericsson).

Thank you again

Hi,

After extensively using the new ROM for a couple of days, I have solved some of the issues...

Rebooting problem:
a) Rebooting after installing applications:
b) Rebooting after moving apps to SD Card:

go to <settings><CyanogenMod settings><Application> select <Allow application moving>
go to <settings><CyanogenMod settings><Application><Install location><external>

c) Camera usage causing reboot:
go to <SD Card> create directory <100ANDRO> & <Camera> folders

d) VideoPlayer usage causing reboot:
go to <SD Card> created directory <media> & in <media> folder create a <video> folder and put all your video files in there

Current issues that I am working on:
a) Widgets installed do not work...
b) updating apps that have been installed by system ROM

I don't have any other problems - [ p/s my camera is working!!! :) ]

as for Bluetooth... so sorry :( I don't own a bluetooth device... but your bluetooth device should be v1.2 to v2.0+EDR compliant

Hey man thanks for all the info you provide for us in the forum! :)

So,when using the 005 ROM you don't get SU apps related reboots anymore?! Also can anyone else confirm the Bluetooth bug?!

Floyo 015 is running fine ATM.
Only bugs I had to deal with are reboots after exiting su apps.
Bluetooth,cam, wifi -> OK!
I m still reluctant to update to 233.
