So I tried to make a call tonight using Google Voice on my Moto Droid. I hit the contact number and chose to use GV to make the call. It initiates the call and the context box pops up saying "Calling via Google Voice 406-xxx-xxxx" and this is the weird part. The "406-xxx-xxxx" number it displays is NOT my actual GV number. But, more weirdness, my real GV number comes up on the other person's phone. Its weird that it reports correctly to the person that I am calling, but displays the wrong number on my phone. Any ideas why this is happening and does this happen to anyone else out there?

I believe that 406 number is the google assigned number of the person your calling. if you text that person with google voice, when they respond and you have text forwarding on you it should say the text was from that number

Its definitely not the GV number of the person I am calling, because I know her GV and tried with both.

No matter what number I call, it says its calling via GV then that 406 number. I live in MT, so my actual cell number is a 406 number as well. I just thought it odd that this weird, unrelated number was displaying on my phone. Thanks to all who have replied. I was unaware that GV used some added regional number in order to function. Does anyone have any info regarding this, that I may learn more about it?

Aha. I didnt realize that GV routed through some other local number before it hit GV. Wonder why they do this as opposed to just dialing the number called unless its jsut to mask my real cell number? I thought that, if anything, it would call MY GV# first, because of the way you can call your own number and then call using the options on the voice prompt call the real number you are trying to dial.

gv is not really a voip service. they use the local local telephone switching network to route calls. that is why they can a regional number when you place a call via gv. if you examine your month cell phone bill you will notice the number appear each time you make a gv call. so it does use minutes when used.

Who said anything about VOIP? I know its not VOIP, I was wondering why the number it presents when i make a GV call is not MY GV number. Why they use the regional number makes a bit of sense, but I dont understand why my phone shows THAT number when I make a GV call.

From what I have seen and read...there is no saving on minutes to your cell phone using GV WHEN YOU DIAL the google number because you are using minutes for the calls.
What I have learned to do is go to the web page on my phone(bookmark when on exact page and signed in). On the page you just add the number you what to call ,press call. The system will call your phone and the number you want to call. All this is data with no minutes used. Any other way use plan minutes. You have to use the internet to place calls.
Now if you use it for your home phone, you can call your google number to save on long distance charges as long as your google number is a local number. If not you will pay long distant rate to call google unless you do the. Connection on the internet.

Again, who is talking about saving minutes? Thats not the issue here. Thanks for the reply, but it has nothing to do with the topic.

Thanks for the help! I will take a look here.

EDIT: No go. I understand the power of 406 already. This isn't the question either. I tested it on a buddy's DROID and when he makes calls via GV it also pops up the message stating that its calling via GV 406.646.6485. More than likely that is just the regional number for us. I just wondered why it displays the regional number when I make a GV call. Thinking more about it, its probably because it is actually dialing THAT number in order to use GV rather than my actual GV number, or the number of the person I am dialing. See, if I didn't live where I live, my GV number would be a long distance call. Now that I understand more about the regional numbers and the reasons for them, its all beginning to make sense.

For me, a 406 number is not and out-of-state long distance call. I live in Montana, which inherently has an area code of 406. So, when I was trying to call my wife's cell, which has a 406 area code and I 'Calling via Google Voice 406.646.6485" I was like, "what is this number? This isn't the number I am trying to call, nor is it my GV number." My GV# IS a 406 number also and I thought something was a)wrong, or b) I had activated the phone with one of my other GV accounts. After checking all three accounts, I found that none of them had that particular number, so I posted on here.

Thanks for all the helpful posts everyone. I think I have my answer.
