Hi

I am a disabled android user currently using a Sony Ericsson X10 mini. I'm looking to upgrade to a nexus s or something similar over the next month or so.

The problem I have is I don't know if I'll be able to use a phone like this. Due to my disability I'm not capable of pushing any buttons not located on the front of the phone i.e. I can't push the power or volume keys on pretty much every phone. This, I believe, will be a major problem when it comes to unlocking the screen so I can actually use the phone.

Is there a way I can use the touch buttons on the front of the phone to unlock the screen? Possibly using an app such as no lock?

Thanks in advance,

Welcome to Android Forums, wheelie. <--- great user name :)

In Android Market are several apps which address the unlock feature.. some even cause an "any key" function on some devices to unlock the screen.

I know people in your situation who use the "shake to wake" type of widgets to open their screen, by carefully but vigorously jostling the device back and forth as it lays in front of them. Sometimes it takes more than one try, but the screen does awaken without use of a hard button.

Be sure to have the screen timeout setting pretty high in minutes so that you don't have to re-awaken it too often. Battery life will suffer unless you make up for that with other settings, such as brightness setting lower, etc. Menu > settings > sound and display > screen timeout (brightness, etc).

These apps/widgets are different for different devices; that is, the same app won't work the same for each different Android model, you have to take chances and find the one for you. ;)

"Shake Awake" is the first one that comes to mind, but there are many of them in Market now under that name. Search on "screen unlock," etc. Again, different apps/widgets of that type are quite different in functionality from phone to phone.
