Help Inspire 4G APN Settings

Hey guys. New here to the forums, but been a fan of this site for a while now :)

My question is this: I'm not the primary on my ATT acct, so when I went to ATT today they did not let me purchase the Inspire without the primary user present. This has never happened to me before, and I purchase phones pretty often. It's usually just a simple sim swap. Not sure if it's different this time cos of the whole "4g" deal. Either way, I couldn't purchase it. Then I remember a lot of people mentioning Radio Shack selling the phone as well, headed over and finally got my hands on the Inspire 4G. The downside: the APN settings are blank, so I can't connect to the net without wi-fi. I know I can easily just bring the primary user to the store (my father) but I don't wanna inconvenience him.

Does any new Inspire owner know the APN settings? And if you do, can you post them? Would be greatly appreciated. Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names.

Also, since I'm pretty unfamiliar this thie process and these settings, would I input these settings into MEdia Net or MMS? Thanks in advance!

I had to have at&t do this for me :(
they took over an hour doing it but they had to update something in their system.

Does anyone know how AT&T fixed the apn setting... my husband took my inspire back to AT&T and they said they fixed it and even gave me a new inspire yet it does the same thing. saying invalid apn setting. I'm going to have to go back there tonight and i want to be able to tell them exactly what is going on. This bites.

Thank you!

my apn that has the little gray lock next to it, Medianet is the name i think, says not set in most of the fields and i bought it from ATT. i did run into an issue with not being able to send/receive pics without being on wifi but menu-wireless&networks-mobile networks-access point names-menu-reset to default

or you can just add a new apn, instead of pressing reset just press add new apn and add the settings
my added apn says
Name AT&T
APN: WAP.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: WAP@CINGULAR.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MICC 310
MNC 410
Auth type blank
APN type blank

also just checked my other inspire and the medianet apn also has not set in most of the field but both are able to connect to the mobile network.

shouldnt do anything to your plan. when i added this apn to my phone to test the mobile hotspot feature i asked a friend at AT&T about it and he said it wouldnt do anything to my bill because it is the settings from AT&T accessing the AT&T network.

basically the one on the phone is locked down and you need them to unlock it to use the mobile hotspot feature but adding your own apn with their settings gives you access to an unlocked apn through AT&T thats why the mobile hotspot feature will work without having AT&T turn it on.

so as long as you dont go over your data allowance on your data plan you should have no problems (but if you do use this new apn to access their mobile hotspot feature it is currently up for debate as to how they are tracking people you use tethering and whatnot and they might send you a text/email letting you know they have "caught" you, so use with caution) if you have no interest with the tethering/mobile hotpot then dont worry

HI all,

I've been using my Inspire for a few months now, using my company-issued BlackBerry's SIM. After a AT&T rep told me I would not get 4g or HSPA speeds without a special SIM, I, naturally, doubted him. Searching the forums, I added the new APN, as outlined in this thread, and have been getting HSPA speeds, and no issues with data for months now.

As of this past Friday, I have not been able to receive any data on my device without being connected to wifi. I deleted the custom APN I created, recreated it, double checked it. I even just hard-reset the device, and still nothing.

Any other suggestions?

First toggle airplane mode (on, wait a second, then off) and if it still isn't connecting to data, try these settings

Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: Leave blank
Port: Leave blank
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: xxx (Don't change this number)
MNC: xxx (Don't change this number)
Everything else: <Not set>

Thanks Simba, but no luck. Do you think the probably could be because this SIM was originally provisioned for a BlackBerry? As I mentioned, I never had a probably previously using this SIM on other Windows Phone 7, or Android devices.

Thanks again

That is very possible. I've changed devices a lot, but it has always been between Windows or Android devices. Since they use the same data plan, I've never had any hiccups. But, in the past, when changing from or to a Blackberry from one of these devices, I've always had to change it.

If you have an unlimited data plan, you won't lose it. Contact AT&T and ask to change to the smartphone data plan, BUT MAKE SURE YOU INDICATE THAT YOU WISH TO KEEP UNLIMITED. If the rep tries to tell you that you have to choose another plan, tell them you'll wait and do it another time. Keep contacting AT&T until you're assured that your unlimited will remain intact. This is supposed to be the case anyway, so it's not manipulative. It's just hard to get a representative that knows what they're doing. Part of it could also be AT&T trying to take advantage of customers and attempting to get them tiered into the new data packages.

Good Luck.

I am VERY new to the smartphones and forums. But, I'm having a heck of a time getting my HTC Inspire to stay connected to my Chevrolet Cruze
handsfree device. If any of you have an answer to this or anything I can do to correct it, please let me know. The Chevrolet Dealer nor AT&T have a clue. They just throw their hands up and say it's the other one's fault. I would put my email on here but I think that is against forum rules.

Wow, thank you so much! I just bought an inspire off ebay and used my sim card from my moto backflip. I have H+ in my area and I kept getting the usual incorrect apn message. I tried all of the above suggestions, but it was this one that u provided that worked for me! Again, thank you so much. I'm very excited I don't have to waste time going through att tech support now.

Glad I could help :).

AT&T Tech Support is useless anyway :p.

This worked with froyo, I have the new gingerbread from AT&T and so far it doesnt work...any ideas/help would be appreciated.

same here. it seems AT&T has figured this out and killed it with the gingerbread update. everyone I know has been unable to use the free tethering. I was forced to upgrade my plan to the 4gb pro plan. I use a lot of data anyways so it doesn't really matter for me.

I am going to straight talk and they told me to get a SIM card from nokia e71 straight talk phone. That it will work in my HTC Inspire from AT&T. They said I needed to edit the APN. I don't know this procedure, could someone tell me how this is done? Please I don't have any service, I'm having android withdrawal.

Settings, wireless network settings, mobile network (or something like that), apns....

That should get you in the right direction.
